—Waffle, meet syrup
…I think a certain columnist has been talking to a certain former senior Canadian politician.
That’s what I think. What do you think?

It has to happen. Otherwise we’re in for a Reform majority. Not sure the current leaders can pull it off though.
… no we are not. We need an effective campaign to show the warts of the present government, & the ability of the Liberal alternative. THE LPC IS NOT A LEFT OF CENTRE PARTY! The LPC is the big tent party of the centre. Liberal governments can walk AND chew gum at the same time, just look to Queens Park, Mr M seems able to do just that.
I agree that if the Libs want to govern federally – and beat Harper – they have to do it from the Centre not from the left.
As for McGuinty – Maybe he can walk and talk and chew Gum andhe has actually weathered the storm well – But the economy i messed in ON and the HST is gonna bring him down.
We all know that syrup always makes mince meat out of any waffle! The old man is dreaming if he thinks a rookie coalition can take on a seasoned reformatory (as you call it) coalition. We will have to wait and see.
It does not have to happen. The Liberal Party has been in uglier positions than minority opposition and bounced back.
Don’t close the casket because, much like the peasant in Monty Python’s Holy Grail, the Liberal party isn’t dead yet.
Really, really? If there is even a tad more media talk about a possible coalition, Canadians will give Harper a majority like you obviously wouldn’t believe. Are Liberals really that lost? Surely Warren you aren’t party to this monstrous thinking, or are you? Methinks the Conservatives have sewed a seed… and it’s a damn great play! 😉
I’m confused by what you mean? Coalition? I can’t imagine even one liberal I know in real life ever voting for an NDPer. None, zip, zero. Bizarre.
And why would we? There’s no need, never has been.
If Harper/Cons wins another election, and they continue to ignore their base on some of the issues important to said base (both social and fiscal), I’d expect the Wildrose Alliance to give birth to some Alberta-first/Alberta-bloc-type protest party in the federal arena. They’d want MPs in the Parliament to represent Alberta and only Alberta’s interests.
In this case, no need to enter agreements or even merge with the NDP in this scenario, as ‘the right’ would be splitting their votes again. Even if they’re only splitting the right-wing vote in Alberta, I’d imagine that would probably be enough to rob the Cons of the seats they would need for plurality.
If the Cons lose the next election, I can’t foresee this transpiring, as ‘the right’ would be united in opposition due to their shared disdain of the Libs. It’s the big Con dilemma, in that they only win and are popular when they have a more moderate/centrist style and platform. Yet, there is only so much their more ideological supporters can take before branding their party as “Liberal Party 2” and look to other options.
I should clarify my post… because in the scenario I mentioned vote splitting. The Cons would not lose seats to the Libs in Alberta. Rather, a federal Wildrose-type party would take seats away from the Cons, especially in rural areas, reducing the number of Con MPs.
The NDP need to elect someone whom the Libs can trust… (a Lib)….someone like Bob Rae would be a perfect fit
