Loud and proud

Don Cherry should stick to promoting thuggery in kid’s hockey.  He knows dick about anything else.

    Cherry is the pits.

  2. Pcase says:

I expected no less from that buffoon. However, I would and did, some how, some way, expect more from the new Mayor.

  3. MCBellecourt says:

    Canada’s very own Foghorn Leghorn.

  4. Bruuks says:

I used to enjoy coaches corner. The past few years have been less and less enjoyable. Yesterday confirmed it.
I ride bikes. I’m politically left leaning, though conservative in many ways. I have a brain and use it for the occasional deep thought, and definitely at election time. Things aren’t always as simple as ‘keep your stick on the ice’ and ‘Habs vs. Leafs’, ‘Good vs. evil’.

I’m the same. I really loved Coaches Corner (and have since I was young) and loved the first intermission of each HNIC. But now that guy is just a douche and I can’t stand watching/listening to him. what a turd.

    • Rob says:

I agree. I used to like Coaches Corner. It was one of the things I was nostalgic for when living outside the country. Now, all I get to see is Cherry repeating his support for the troops. I am generally a pro-military person and steadfastly respect what veterans have done for this country. I just think there’s a time and a place, HNIC’s first intermission is not the time nor the place.

That said, the Mayor’s choice of Cherry as his introductory person and the person investing his mantle of office was comical. It says a lot about how Rob Ford will govern.

  5. Marc L says:

Well put Warren, and I’m not even a “leftie”.

  6. Bill says:

Cherry works for the CBC and is pretty much as elite as they come in this country.

Oh yeah, and he’s a moron too.

  7. Marc-Andre Chiasson says:

The Cherry on Ford’s cake. What else can I say or rather what else can Marie Antoinette say except “Let them eat Timbits”.

  8. Sattva says:

I thought it was funny. It was a little over the top but still funny. And when I consider how Cherry has been attacked in the last week, it was a good shot. It certainly was an effective hit. They, his detractors haven’t stopped crying since.

    • The Doctor says:

I said it yesterday, I’ll say it again: taking Don Cherry seriously is like taking the Jackass movies seriously. Everybody, and I mean everybody, should just take a stress pill and chill.

    • Ted says:

Because that is the important thing when you are introducing and inaugurating a new mayor in a watershed moment in Toronto’s history.

      Cherry has no class.

  9. Catherine says:

I will proudly stand next to you as ‘proud to be a leftie Pinko.’

  10. Ted says:

Petty partisan potshots and juvenile insults: just the kind of class act you want at an inauguration.

    Turning Grapes into whine.

  11. GritChik says:

    Glad you like it!

  12. Chris Rowlinson says:

I have no problem with people electing Rob Ford, as long as they agree to let their genitals be used for major league baseball batting practice if he turns out to be even half of the incompetent embarrassment he is purported to be.

  13. “THUGGERY”….now that’s a word not often used!!
I watch Coach’s Corner mainly for the entertainment value and secondly for Don and Ron’s insight into hockey.
In all my years of watching the show,I cannot ever remember hearing either of these two gentlemen either supporting or condoning “thuggery” at any level of hockey, let alone the “kid” level.
A philosophy of “play hard, play fair” would seem(to me) to be a more accurate reflection of their values.
Perhaps the attitude and philosophy of Tie Domi would have been more acceptable at the innaguration of your new mayor.

    • Namesake says:

      “I watch Coach’s Corner mainly for….”

Ri-i-ght… that ranks right up there on the truth/chuckle-meter with, “I read Playboy for the articles.”

      “Thuggery” =df.: rough, violent behaviour.

“Don Cherry’s Rock’em Sock’em Hockey is a series of [22 annual] videos, featur[ing] a compilation of NHL plays, goals, saves, bloopers, hits and fights…”

    • Namesake says:

p.s.: Google the string: “Don Cherry” hockey thuggery = 4,290 results; ergo, hardly a unique, idiosyncratic, or skewed characterization on WK’s part.

  14. Brent Sienna says:

Ok now Google “Warren Kinsella” and you get a link to the article entitled “Rob Ford: Moron”. In said article Warren calls Ford not only “moron” in the title but also “knuckle-dragger”.

Name calling and insult hurling isn’t limited to just one side folks. Don’t get all high and mighty berating Cherry people. He’s only standing up to fight for what he believes in as much as what you believe in.

Besides the one thing you should all be on Cherry for was that jacket…. my television has yet to recover from it. I think it blew the lamp in it trying to show that neon monstrosity.

  15. hugger says:

Cherry was embarrassing. The headlines should read, Toronto Mayor invites Side Show Bob to council.

Is there some kind of game afoot within the new right? Is Palin the benchmark and the prize goes to the one who can be the most outrageous, the most intellectually offensive of them all?

Jeepers. I’m not the elitist type by any means. I’m a jeans, pick up truck and hunting rifle kind of guy. I think a 1500 lb cow is something to be admired. It is as beautiful to me as a painting is to some others. Yet I find these attempts to appeal to base instincts, to encourage knee jerk reactions and garner political support through these methods, both manipulative and offensive.

I don’t care much for a lot of the things the “pinkos” do either, and am not shy about telling them so, but I feel this race to the bottom is a dishonest stunt and the people who are orchestrating this are not all stupid, they merely use the useful idiots in their quest and through their actions, make their disdain for average people quite clear.

  16. Kevin says:

I disagree that Don Cherry doesn’t know dick about anything else. He knows how to be a dick.

  17. The Other Jim says:

A great analysis of Cherry by Damien Cox (http://thestar.blogs.com/thespin/2010/12/thursday-mail.html):

Finally, how about Don Cherry’s bizarre political performance this week?

He’s our very own Sarah Palin, disguising one nutty, half-baked or erroneous idea after another as so-called “straight talk.” But here’s the part that bugs. Cherry loves to talk about how the Memorial Cup shouldn’t be called the Mem Cup because it takes away from the military history of the trophy, and turns every Remembrance Day into a lengthy pro-soldier episode of Coach’s Corner.

I’m good with all of that. We should honor and support our soldiers if as a country we choose to send them into harm’s way.

What he seems to miss, however, is that all these soldiers have fought for our freedom, and that means freedom of thought, of belief, of opinion, of political philosophy.

It means they fought, and fight, for the right of Canadians to live in a democracy and to look at the world in a different way from Don Cherry. They fought, and fight, for people to be “pinkos” if they want to be without being insulted for their political beliefs or made to feel as though they are somehow unpatriotic.

Sadly, Cherry doesn’t get that. He just sees the guns and the glory.

  18. Mr. Chamberlain says:

Ford understands his base. Cherry understands his own base. They both understand the value of a good hit to get the crowd going and the team revved up.
