Harper’s kooks

Norman liked this quote, for some reason, so here’s a link to the story, too!

“Harper’s got too many kooks in his caucus, so something will bust out.”

… ha! We have been saying for years that the wing-nuts will expose themselves momentarily, and yet, Mr. Harper, in a Stalin-esque demonstration of party control, has consistently kept his caucus cowered.

And that, of course, is the purpose of the National Conservative Caucus meeting in Ottawa this week – to brief Mr. Harper’s seat-warmers on what they will be parroting over the next few months, while putting on a show for his die-hard supporters to reinforce the meme about there being his being in any way effective.

Just look at their agenda – the economy, that he demonstrably cannot grasp, and is thus entirely reactive to, the pursuit of more prison capacity, dressed-up as a bold move for “Justice”, and making it more difficult to track and control firearms, just because.

No bold moves from this bunch of light-weights, to address the problems of today and tomorrow. Just more of the same nothing we have come to expect.

    • All of which has served to place Canada very well in comparison to the rest of the world, as has been recognized by winning a majority government. Well done Mr. Harper!!

Except what got us through the recession were Liberal policies that Harper opposed and was trying to dismantle but, fortunately, had not.

Stuff like heavy regulation of the financial sector. Harper had already started to dismantle this after years of opposition and we’re still paying for hundreds of millions of government mortgage guarantees, a program Harper fortunately stopped when it was pounded home to him how dumb it was after almost 2 years.

Stuff like responsible fiscal management. The Liberals (with an important hat tip to Mulroney) cut spending, cut taxes, eliminated the deficit, reduced the debt, balanced the budget for 8 years, put money aside for recessions and were careful to spend no more than they took in as revenue. Harper’s an out-of-control spender and broke spending records, twice, even before the record breakign spending during the recession, all while gutting revenues. His is a train wreck of fiscal management and only looks good because of the great starting point he had.

Governments always take credit for the good work of their predecessors. I get that and accept that. But for the sake of the future, let’s remember the fiscal decisions that got us through the recession better than anyone. If Harper wants to continue the Liberal fiscal legacy and manage finances like a Liberal, to our greater good, then I’m fine with that.

It will take a bit more time, but the kooks will come out. Someone, or a group will feel that they are not being paid attention to, or they should be in cabinet, and will revolt in some way. It’s just a matter of time.

Gord is right. The Liberals have always had their fair share of kooks in their big messy tent. Tom Wappel, anyone? The difference, of course, is that Liberal kookdom, being out in the open like all their messes, is clearly not part of their official policy.

The problem with ConservaKooks is that some kookdom does become official policy. Furthermore the secretive and opaque nature of the Harper government means that it is impossible to completely discount the kooks as it’s unclear where the official stance is.

    Missed again, Gord.

The issue is your excuse-making for kooks on the right doesn’t square with you criticisms of the left.

  5. Patrick Deberg says:

    Gord,
It’s not the policies that are the problems, it’s the people. Look at Cheryl Gallant in Pembroke now. THe last election she was telling her base the liberals were going to steal their wood stoves. Seriously ! The wood stoves ! And the people on the east coast would have to pony up their own rescue ships in the event of a hurricane. But Stevo keeps her so tightly under wraps you can see the big white coat marks on her arms. The liberals were nutty at times but allowed to spout and breach at will. If Harper took off the muzzles he makes his minions wear it would look like a moonbat convention in a circus freak tent. But we know that won’t happen.
