—The right response to prejudice
Everyone is talking about Lakeridge Hospital’s brilliant response to the hateful Parti Quebecois “Charter.” The news stories – one of them is here – don’t tell you who came up with the concept, however.
Well, I can tell you that a certain former Dalton McGuinty guy (who is rather brilliant, but don’t tell him I said that) works there. And I can also tell you that, if you hover your mouse in the right way, the answer will become clear.
P.S. In a related-but-not development, today is the tenth anniversary of “Reptilian Kitten Eater.” Robert Loney told me. He knows, because it’s his birthday! Happy birthday!
P.P.S. I am not GritChik. Or GritGirl.
great ad…ROC should recruit students, business people , workers of all stripes from Quebec – we are an inclusive society…
Ya, thats a 3 thumbs up, brilliant.
The next trick that gets me lean Ontario Lib is if they even the playing field for Ontario workers who, can and have had their vehicles impounded for being in Quebec with white plates. If they ever wanted a building boom in Ottawa and up the Valley then all they have to do is tell Quebec that they have to open the borders up in the same manner as Ontario does to trades people.
+1
Brilliant ad.
This points to a repeat of Bill 101, but with an even larger exodus.
There was a reporter on TV that said that Quebec was losing 6,000 people a month BEFORE this latest nonsense.
Lisa Frula says we (the ROC) should just zip it and not give the PQ more ammo.
I don’t think you guys get it. The PQ will not be unhappy that people feeling targetted by this bill leave…
Another proper response is the parody ads that some group people have put out. Hopefully these Quebecers will carry the day.
The Charter is the brainchild of the same ideology that deemed “pasta” on a restaurant menu to be an offence.
Can’t wait for the Separatists to produce their own version of Triumph of the Will.

I understand the PQ is working on new Hugo Boss retro-wear for all their public employees to wear.
It is a good response precisely because it affirms the inclusive nature of Canadian society. There is something more than a little desperate in the PQ’s assertion of ‘Quebec values,’ values that are framed as a set of narrowly focused prohibitions on what not to wear as a public employee. The PQ have calculated that this issue will be their wedge. And sure enough, in any polity there is always an appetite for resentment. Let the respose to this spiteful and negative initiative be overwhelmingly positive — it is a chance for Canada to show what Canadian values, and Canada as a country, have become. Affirm the Charter, affirm the commitment to Multi Culturalism, affirm the place of Quebec, and all Quebecers, no matter what they might wear on their heads, within the Federation. We are a better country than this PQ government would have Quebec be!
I agree this was a brilliant and very quickly executed move. My worry is that this is part of the PQ plan, they *want* to get rid of what Mr. Parizeau called “the ethnic vote” following the last referendum.
Why can’t politicians be prosecuted *personally* for policies that affect thousands of people?
Sadly this is falling right into the PQ plan. They want the non pure laine to leave Quebec.
I love the ad but this whole thing is all playing out how the PC wants it. I read a comment from a Quebecois saying that photo is another example of outside interference and sums up exactly why Quebecers support separation. Cue exodus, cue lawsuits, cue separation fervour … blah blah blah. Only Quebecers can turn this around – IF they want to. I’m hoping they do.
Warren,
Some in English Canada need to buy more narrow paint brushes that do not make erronous sweeping generalizations. Most sovereignists, PQ or otherwise, do not favour a strictly pure laine society. That would be like cutting off the state’s nose in spite of its face.
We have been in Quebec since 1860 and we are going nowhere. Our job is to stay and fight this, not take the convenient cowardly way and simply cut and run.
Warren,
It’s nice to see Maria Mourani and Lisette Lapointe entering the debate. This is no place for party line politics. Every elected member must be able to speak their mind without fear of political retribution. Paille has bungled this badly.
I wonder why they didn’t use a picture of a doctor wearing a burqa is this ad?
