no way….I think we should have declined from the get go. I think after this, “Olympics” should be cancelled until a new type of committee can be formed, perhaps by old olympic athletes who would create the event around…you know the sports and keep it smaller and less expensive. And yeah rule number one, no travelling to to oppressive dictatorships. Lets use the olympics for what it was meant for, competing athletes in a fair venue. and oh ya, a chance for competing athletes of said dictatorships, to defect.

it’s not about the sports Debs it’s about the medals. none of us that I know of would cross the street to watch a bunch of kids do slope style snowboarding and as for holding the Olympics somewhere less dictatorial where would you suggest. there is no such place. it’s just a question of degree. the G20 was fascism lite and the invasion of Iraq and the subsequent murder of 100.000 people is a war crime but Georgie boy is living the high life in Dallas just fine and don’t even get me started on Cheney.

      • debs says:

I completely agree! We have alot more this planet needs other then medals for sports and no venue is without some degree of political wrongdoing. This planet is run by greed and corporate controllers and they cross borders.
and yeah Cheney should be in chains being waterboarded daily.

      • Danny Aldham says:

You are so wrong that nobody would cross the street to watch slope style. The reason it is in the Olympics this year is that the X-Games are huge with the young kid audience. Huge. Bigger than the Olympics to most.

The only story I’m following from Sochi.

  3. Kelly says:

Well, let’s not forget that 21 years the IOC was headed up by a Spanish fascist and colleague of Generalissimo Franco. The Olympics are a very, very mixed bag. I wish the athletes well; the apparatchiks not so much.

  4. pipes says:

This was a militia beatdown that occurred 30 km from Sochi. Which makes it even worse. I don’t know what PR was about to protest, but it was apparently well away from the Olympic venues, which suggests to me it was oppressive, intolerant hatred and an opportunity to beat the shit out of someone with impunity.

As far as the Olympics are concerned, I am still a fan, but old school. I don’t know why so many professional athletes are allowed in and I am amazed that the NHL players are allowed to participate. One disabling injury to a contracted NHL player costs the team millions and the same goes for NBA players.

Give it back to the amateurs and put it in Greece where it belongs says I.

In fact the Para Olympics is far better and sadly is an after thought when the abled bodied athletes leave with the media and sponsors. Oh and if you want to see real joy and competition, well, go to a Special Olympics venue and you will never ever be the same again. Its a heart explosion.

Can’t imagine getting excited about any of the bullshit “heroics” going on at Putin’s circus.
    When is it over?

I agree 100%. There is no honour or dignity in these things — who can hide the doping the best, along with the corruption and money spent to glorify Vlad the new Czar, and then the gay ban, why is any civilized country there. It is an appalling waste of money, and for the athletes, nice, but the whole thing is stinks so much it is hard to care about their achievements IMO.

Video of the Cossacks beating the women from the Globe

Want to say more…., will just say see the women’s courage.

    • pipes says:

Yes it is rare courage, especially knowing what’s to come. I watched the video and it could have been so much worse. It felt like at any moment of resistance the murdering could start.

We sure have been getting a lot of anti Russian media coverage the past little while. Maybe the coverage will get us to go along with funding protestors in Ukraine, the ones on the far right who are leading the violence, the ones who are trying to get rid of that president who ran on a non alignment platform, and are trying to replace his government with one that will be a part of the EU bring NATO even closer to Russia’s heartland.

I haven’t watched any of the Olympics at all. I’m busy. I have a life.
I work full-time and take 4 classes per semester.

  9. Paul Brennan says:

We shouldnt have gone to Sochi, we shouldnt have gone to China or anywhere else human rights are trampled…

  10. Beth Higginson says:

I think it is horrible what was done to Pussy Riot. On the other hand, as a former high school athlete, I am watching the sports as these athletes have spent a lot of time and effort getting to this point. My daughters were in sports and it taught them discipline and they gained a lot of friends. They got to compete in Prague and Nottingham – amazing experiences. As a result they want to travel the world and they have a better sense of the world than Stephen Harper did as he had only travelled outside of Canada, once before he became Prime Minister.
None of us are lily white. We do the best with our lives.
