This just flew out of the woods and over my head

Scared the living shit out of me, too: the only things with a motor around here are of the four-stroke variety. Wow.

Maybe it’s Minister Peter MacKay scoping out fishing holes in your area. đŸ™‚

Dear Leader knows where you are.

Does Peter McKay fish in your lake?

The Harper security folks have been watching and enjoyed your view – hence the decison was made by the short pant boys to *$a$UP this weekend

It’s a Herc, or a Super Herc. It’d be the latter if you’re near Trenton.

    PMSH is watching you!

    It’s a plane, it’s a drone,…no, it’s…

Years ago, at a cottage near Barry’s Bay, we used to be visited by these devices flying over at oh maybe 100 feet up if you are generous. Some of them had the RAF roundel on their sides. Flying much lower than discretion would suggest with guys hanging out of the open hatch at the back, waving merrily. Twas the SAS training at Borden…. All right lads, jump into the boonies in Algonquin Park and make your way back to Borden on foot…. all after a low level extraction jump. Black flies and deer flies afflicted them no doubt. But they are tough British psychos. Luckily they are routinely on our side when scuffles occur. Planes also seen at Calgary airport for delivery of squaddies to Wainwright for some tanker training on the dry prairie.

    You’re hiding in “plane” sight.

Same thing happened to me when I was at a camp near Perth-Andover New Brunswick many years ago, but in that case, it was a mammoth-sized B-52 Bomber from the American base in Limestone, Maine. At that time, because of the wide turning circle they required, they had permission I believe to cross into Canadian air space. Now if you think a Herc is bad, a B-52 will really scare the living shit out of you if you’re not expecting it.

Probably on it’s way to Ukraine, it’s called “logistical pre-positioning”….

“Canada will send military equipment to help Ukraine protect its eastern border, Defence Minister Rob Nicholson said Thursday.

Ukraine has asked for this and once again we are delivering,” Nicholson said at CFB Trenton, a busy air base located a 90-minute drive east of Toronto.”

It’s called “logistical pre-positioning” we are part of NATO, an alliance. Just like the good old alliances of World War 1 and World War 2.

    • Kelly says:

Sorry for going off topic but…Ukraine isn’t in NATO and never will be, so I’m not sure what alliance you’re referring to. You’ve heard of red lines? Well NATO is one that Russia will not let Ukraine cross. This whole mess started when the USA and NATO broke the deal they made with Gorbachev. Everyone agreed that East Germany could merge with West Germany but NATO wouldn’t expand east. Except it did, and then missiles were stationed near Russia and then the USA got stupid in Georgia and South Ossetia so Russia got violent there. Then they started mucking around Ukraine and Putin took over Crimea and that’s where we are today. If Ukraine tries to block Russian gas from getting through its territory to Western Europe all bets are off over there. It would be wise for the Ukrainian PM to make sure his tea doesn’t glow in the dark before he drinks it.

I was walking early one morning when a herc flew over low and slow. It seemed a bit out of place and a few minutes later I found out that herc was part of a search looking for a fellow pilot I knew. The local pilots took to the air and our friend was found a hundred miles from home dead from flight into terrain. It is suspected he ran into a snow squall and lacking instrument training spiraled into the ground. I’ve never looked at a herc the same since.

Three of them flew over Stoney right past my living room at slightly higher than treetop level. This was back in the 80’s. We figured it could be the Canadian Airborne Regt. on the way to Petawawa during an exercise.

There is no CAR now remember Somalia ? Smaller units spread throughout the regular regiments do the work now. If this was just one aircraft, it could have been them again.

It is a sight and sound that grabs your attention, that’s for damn sure !

Lancaster, going to England for the ceremonies? We have one of the two remaining working Lancasters in the world. The wound of them flying overhead is awesome! There have been a few here over Ennui-on-the-Rideau over the years and the sound is unforgettable (and unmistakable!!).

    • boopsie says:

Was thinking Lanc myself…was the date right? Flew from Mt Hope Hamilton to Goose Bay NL in one go.
      Then Greenland Iceland.

    • Ray says:

      If I may clarify:

One would be hard-pressed to mistake the sound of 4 x 4600hp Allison turboprops from 4 x 1300hp Merlins.

The above bird is a RCAF C-130 Hercules – E or H model.

It could be a lot worse: a water bomber looking for scuba divers or snorkelers to scoop up from the water.
