I’m happy folks are opposing the display of the Confederate flag

Good. But why not the pro-the pro-Nazi rag distributed by Canada Post, as well?

I am a proud Confederate because I am a proud Canadian and Canada is a Confederation. One of the reasons separatism is down in Quebec is because PM Harper has gone back to the Confederation model after Justin’s Dad tried to make Canada a Federation. BTW back in my hippy youth the Confederate flag stood for freedom of thought and practice in my circle of friends. Wasn’t a racist in the bunch.

    • David says:

Back in my youth it didn’t stand for freedom of thought. It stood for Just’a couple ofgood ol’ boys, never meanin’ no harm, been in trouble with the law
since the day they was born…

You and your buds must have felt pretty dumb when you found out better, eh? Like when Joey on Friends leanred the name Joseph Stalin is already taken.

Obviously your “circle of friends” had no understanding of history.

    • Joe says:

Obviously it is you who are lacking in historical perspective. The US civil war had almost nothing to do with slavery and had almost everything with the North keeping control of the cotton industry. In certain ways it reminds me of Justin’s Dad trying to take control of the Western Canadian energy industry for the benefit of Ontario and Quebec. As an Irish Catholic once explained the conflict in Northern Ireland “Nobody likes a bully”.

Better not let Vice President Alexander Stephens of the Confederacy know that one.

        http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/document/cornerstone-speech/

“Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea [to the idea that the enslavement of the African was in violation of the laws of nature]; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. ”

No, indeed, nothing to do with slavery. Nothing whatsoever.

        • Joe says:

Guess your reading skills are about on par with your understanding of history. I didn’t say it had NOTHING to do with slavery I said it had very little to do with slavery. Many northerners owned slaves and wanted to keep their slaves. What the American civil war was about was the conflict between the ideal of central control and individual state control. Canada, mercifully remains a Confederacy.

  3. Jack McLeod says:

It is the Confederate “Battle” flag and somehow I doubt any of the Confederate troops going in battle against oppressive central government were somehow thinking; I just have to fight to keep my slaves!

  4. Tiger says:

    Easy distinction to make.

    1. Oppose public/official use of the Confederate battle flag, as it’s (a) a flag of treason and slavery, and (b) actively hurtful to a third of the population.

    2. Oppose censoring the mail, while Canada Post has a legislative monopoly on residential mail delivery.

(Get rid of Canada Post’s monopoly, and then refusing to deliver the hate rag is far easier to defend.)
