“A guild of vampires”

Alan conjures up a phrase that will forever live in infamy. Here.

Newspapers living forever – thanks to the Count, mainly – not so much.

Warren’s idea of dystopia must be watching mainstream papers fold one by one until only Your Ward News is left standing.

We live in interesting times. I still remember the ‘race to the bottom’ initiated by Conrad Black et al. Accumulate title after title, gut the newsroom, syndicate tons of rubbish, and homogenise the news. Who needs all those titles when they all say the same thing? (at such a low and extremely profitable cost). Problem is, a crappy product shrinks demand. It was probably inevitable that print news would die. Printing just cannot compare to free delivery any time. But transitioning might have been easier if there were actually a few more brands around that were trusted. But that is not what happened, and newspapers are pretty well finished now. I am sure we will figure out how to get reliable news. There are businesses doing it right now, they will likely come to dominate through decent content.
