Congratulations Warren! You have spotted a Polyphemus Moth. They are absolutely gorgeous, and one of the biggest moths around. I have seen Luna Moths before too, which are very similar, but green. They are sooo big, when they fly it looks like magic, Harry Potter style. How does a book fly?
A google image search found it for me… It’s a Polyphemus! Common moth, but a nice looking one. Interesting backstory … https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antheraea_polyphemus
Related to one of these?

That is a polyphemus moth – named for the Cyclops. Remember the scene in Fellowship of the Ring where Gandalf sends a messenger moth to the eagles?
It’s beautiful anyway.
its a conservative listening device…
Lots of wrong answers here. This is actually an Athene noctua cunicularia (Moth owl) who’s camouflage makes it look like a moth. Common mistake.
