Cancel culture?

Cancel it.

It’s funny how, all of a sudden cancel culture is a problem when it’s one of their own who is being “cancelled.”

I think Nesrine Malik at the Guardian has a good response to the letter… People who have been cancelled forever until now finally have the tools to push back and people of privilege don’t like it. What else is new. Reactionaries come in all stripes.

This is absolutely the best thing to happen in quite some time. The list of signatories is quite impressive.

If you want to see a prime example of Cancel Culture, look no further than the Mother Corp, CBC. Their news website has the ability to log viewer comments on stories, but CBC never allows comments on the topics most in need of debate. And for those stories in which they do allow comments, the CBC censors will delete any comment that goes against conventional wisdom. Your tax dollars at work – ensuring you aren’t burdened with any hard thinking or challenging brainwork!

CBC is the one thing I would like to see cancelled.

Though I would keep Radio Canada.

To this day I cannot wrap my head around the fact both receive taxpayer funding and are ostensibly the same crown corporation fulfilling the same mandate. Yet the difference in quality when it comes to programming between the two is quite remarkable.

I just want to know where the #$%#ing ice cream truck is. I can hear it but I cant find it………..

  5. Yet Another Calgarian says:

Seeing Chomsky and Frum sign the same letter is kind of mind blowing.

Seeing people say in response they’re rich people protecting their power and should shut up kind of underlines why they signed the letter.

    • Yet Another Calgarian says:

Seeing people like Thomas Chatterton Williams and some of the other non caucasian signers getting told… over whelmingly by white people… that they’re race traitors and essentially “uppity” has moved the response from clueless and frightening to actively horrifying.

Even if Biden wins in November this kind of behaviour is not going to go away. If anything its going to escalate which is going to make the next four years worrisome and dangerous.

  6. A little late to the party aren’t they? You would think our learned betters would know that the revolution always devours its children. Dear chattering classes – it is a long road without a curve.

In a way “cancel culture” is just a new version of “don’t trust anyone over 30”. I still have vivid memories of baby boomer babysitters full of Marcuse and Mao (some of whom alas have morphed into TeaParty types) for kids playing cowboys and indians was beyond the pale. Dogmatism is the flip side of youthful idealism and while I don’t condone the excesses of the past or present in defence of some ideological purity test, I think we should take a chill pill as to how much of a threat this represents. I, for one, would like to see less generational bickering disguised as a battle against “political correctness”. Today’s Red Guard all too often becomes tomorrow’s Hedge Fund Manager. Opinions differ.

    • Pedant says:

No you have it backwards. “Don’t trust anyone over 30” was about rebelling against the establishment (or so the silly Boomers told themselves before they became that establishment).

This time, cancel culture IS the establishment. The modern equivalent of the 60s era mavericks would be classical liberals.

    • The Doctor says:

I hear you, but at the same time people are being fired from their jobs. That is serious shit.

I mean, the case of that guy who got “cancelled” merely for citing factual research that showed that non-violent protests are in fact more effective than violent ones? Some of this truly is Cultural Revolution meets Senator McCarthy.

  8. Pedant says:

Classical liberals and conservatives are the new counter-culture. Should organize their own latter day free-speech summer of love (of the spoken word). They’ll need heavy security from the communist left now taking its cues from Stalin and Pol Pot.

    • The Doctor says:

I would agree that down South, moderate centrist Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans (e.g., Bill Kristol, Charlie Sykes) have more in common with one another than with their respective fringes on this point. It’s no accident they’re making common cause to get Biden elected and Trump de-elected.
