It saddens me to think that today we wouldn’t get anywheres near the response from our young people to battle evil that we got from the Greatest Generation. It’s sadder to think that the response we’d get is them cheering the Nazis on.
I saw a blurb a few days ago about what happened on one American landing craft on a Normandy beach. The soldiers were so scared almost shitless (Can you blame them?) that the rear gunner was told to prepare the machine gun and if necessary fire on their own men from the back of the landing craft all the way to the front. That threat proved convincing and all the soldiers waded into the water.
(It’s 50-50 whether I would have been any braver.)
