—Holy crap – the Tories won!
Didn’t see this coming – and neither did Jenni Byrne and most Tories!
What will Trudeau do?

Are knives being sharpened?
We should know at 1pm but who would be sharpening them? Someone like Housefather or Erskine-Smith has to say it out loud.
By elections are so often a chance for locals to send a message as opposed to a shift in the will of the electorate overall.
I think the message this time is “we encourage liberal sheep everywhere to send these folks packing”.
It’s hard to say how an as yet unscheduled election morphs from here but I recall WK commenting very early on in the Early days of Trudeaumania 2 that this was not the same liberal party.
To that end it’s very hard to fathom how this leader or any caucus candidate to replace him can right the ship.
Can the Liberals even have an election for a new leader ? Surely even Mr Singh can see this corpse is hanging on the ropes? It may be a way to save his own ass I don’t know because….
…It’s a clear message this government is WAY past its best before date. In fact if Toronto St Paul is rotting how low can they go?
Trudeau will shrug, and play for time.
Warren,
Byrne. No comment.
They have to force him out now. If they don’t they’re already pretty much done. He won’t go voluntarily. First time in history that a Liberal caucus is obliged to take a leader out politically. I hope and pray they do their usual predictable nothing. If they get a new leader, they’re immediately competitive again. Certainly don’t want that.
I wonder if the Jewish vote sealed the deal?
Ronald-who is they?
Martin,
Caucus.
Ronald – in this case, the Jewish vote likely split the hair’s difference. Mainstreet exit polls placed Jewish support for the Liberals in St Paul’s at just over 20%, Conservative at well over 60%.
Last month Angus Reid found the Conservatives leading among Jewish respondents nationwide 42-33. Typically, in the pre-war period, Jewish support for Liberals would hang somewhere around 40.
Unsurprisingly, the Muslim community is also abandoning the party in favour of the NDP. This is what happens when leaders refuse to speak with any clarity on divisive issues.
This is a great outcome, most obviously for the stunning rebuke for a Prime Minister who made two recent negative news impacts while Church was knocking on doors. Sooner or later, Trudeau was going to get burned for $220,000 en flight catering bills and attention hogging “Slava Ukraina” stunts.
Also, this loss will force the Conservatives to formulate a strategy that is beyond Justin Trudeau bashing. I often wonder where the Cons would sit in approval ratings if they put any effort into appearing like a government in waiting. Catchy slogans need to be replaced with some tangible linkage between policy and outcome for a disillusioned electorate that needs to see some relief, and soon.
Singh doesn’t get his federal pension till next February. As long as that fact hangs out there, there won’t be any confidence issues for Trudeau in Parliament.
Can’t say the same confidence will exist in the caucus retreat though.
Singh represents a riding in Burnaby which is one of the safest NDP areas in Canada. He would easily reelected if an election were held today.
The reason that he does not force a confidence motion is that he is getting many of the things that he wants.
