—This is who they are
Listening to U.S. media expressing shock, and reminded of Breslin’s sad final line in his column about the shooting of Lennon 44 years ago:
He “became another person who [was] shot with a gun” in America.
America needs to make it harder for some to get guns.
But they won’t.
Warren,
Hate in the heart is a far greater motivator than a gun in the hand and at least a plurality of Americans are guilty of that. On both sides.
My hope is that the attempted assassin turns out to be deranged in the same way that Mark David Chapman was. Like Trump was reading his thoughts or he wanted to impress Margot Robbie or something along those lines.
But I fear that he may have been a registered Democrat or a homosexual etc etc which will just feed into an already poisoned narrative.
The attempted assassin is dead. So there is only so much information that can be collected since he obviously cannot be questioned or interrogated.
We know he was 20. So likely his brain was not fully developed.
Sorry, I meant John Hinckley Jr. not Chapman.
Exactly. They’ll say they need more guns.
My other comment – photo journalists are reminding us all of the power / value of their profession tonight.
I have this theory – Americans are abso-fucking-lately nuts about guns.
It is really the greatest but not the only difference in our two societies.
I also feel that rampant gun ownership is about the only difference in our two nations’ political discourse. If you subtract the communist party and the separatist from our parliament you have a very divided political environment between conservative and liberal viewpoints. People on the other side DO NOT feel the other side is a valued part of our community.
That division while throwing in any 20 year old being able to buy an assault style rifle and this could have been Trudeau.
So while the guns are a huge problem the symptoms of division are still there. I have said it before – without Trump there is still 50% of the USA feeling unheard by the other 50%. is
No-one really has answers to this problem. Assassinations have occurred elsewhere. Bad “luck” prevented Hitler’s assassins from “success” where Boothe and Oswald by that measure were successful in their objectives.
