—A post about Mark Carney that will make you mad, or make you sad, or make you say: it’s Canada Day, who cares about politics
Carney did cave on the digital sales tax. And he may do so again when Trump goes after supply management.
Is it fatal? Don’t think so. My sense is people think he’s doing fine. Nobody is mad at him like they were at Justin, post-2021.
That may change, but for now he’s fine.
Canadians will benefit from the demises of the DST and supply management. The tech giants would simply pass the DST onto Canadian customers as few would substitute inferior non-digital alternatives or low quality Canadian digital services. Supply management inflates food prices, stiffles innovation and unfairly awards quota by province. Hopefully Canada secures a deal on softwood lumber in return. I also hope Trump provides the impetus to end protection of the airlines, telecoms, media companies and financial service providers.
Doug,
You and Pierre would be well advised not to hold your breath. WTO, NAFTA and USMCA panels have ruled ad nauseam in our favour and the Americans did nothing in response. More of the same coming forever on softwood.
Getting rid of Supply Management would still be worth getting nothing in return
Warren,
Like we all said before, a Trump deal only means dipshit wins while everyone else loses. So will go the new USMCA. In the end, Carney will have to tell him to fuck off. No deal! Anything else would be a complete surrender to that bullying asshole.
Ronald,
PM Carnage will capitulate.
And, at the signing, both sides will say a great and honourable deal has been struck after vigorous back-and-forth negotiations that nearly went off the rails.
It’s not going to end well for us
I don’t buy it. I think Carney allowed it to hang in the air only to be pulled back as a ploy to keep Trump talking.
Anyone who presumes that Trump is negotiating anything… is fundamentally misreading the situation. Trump’s only contribution to any discussion is top of mind wild guesses.
Carney knows he has a weak hand, but he is playing Trump to squeeze as much out of him as he can get away with. Trump is the biggest sucker the world has ever seen.
Sean,
The best Carney can hope for is…figleaf as nothing.
Folks would rather not think about politics during the summer.
Plus, Carney knows that less is more.
Which is why he’ll resurface after Labour Day, and tell us everything is fine
Until he finally has to provide a financial report to his shareholders.
Supply management is a system the Americans should emulate, not attack – their farmers would be in better shape.
Why? Lack of competition leads to stagnation
New Zealand got rid of supply management. Its dairy industry is doing very well.
Gilbert,
Apples and oranges. New Zealand is naturally protected by geography. The prohibitive cost for American farmers to ship there ensures that American penetration of their market remains limited at best. It’s much easier for them to trade equitably with Australia than anywhere else, and to my knowledge, that’s what they’re doing.
New Zealand exports dairy products around the world. Its dairy products account for about 24% of exports. Canada, on the other hand, also exports dairy products, but they account for less than 1% of exports. Supply management seems to focus primarily on domestic production.
NZ is a massive dairy exporter
New Zealand Trade Minister David Parker says the dairy industry in New Zealand became larger and more efficient after ending supply management.
Carney has a winking problem. Discuss.
Your name is, um, Wink.
Warren,
I thought his name was really WINK, wink! LOL.
(It’s probably a nervous tick.)
Har dee har har. Lol. Here’s the article sourced from the national post. https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/mark-carney-keeps-winking
