WHAT HAPPENED IN COURT YESTERDAY
Here is this morning’s Citizen
on what took place in court yesterday: [Defendants’ lawyer Scott] Hutchison asked [Plaintiff Ian] Macdonald if Ernst Zundel, a known holocaust denier, was an associate. Mr. Macdonald answered no.
"I supported him insofar as he was a persecuted minority because of his opinion," he said.
Mr. Macdonald said he did not agree with Mr. Zundel's belief that the Holocaust hadn't happened, but he told the court there was no definitive account of the Holocaust. "Many are contradictory. He was quite in order to ask that question, 'Did Six Million Die?' I think it's a legitimate question."
Mr. Macdonald's cross-examination will continue tomorrow.
reporter only has so much space, I guess, and it’s a fact that quite a few other things were said by Ian Macdonald yesterday. A sampling:
• The Germans of the Nazi era were “good Christians” and “ethnic allies.”
• The Nazi Germany regime could “not be faulted at all” as it sought “the best solution…” Germany, at the time, was “a shining light.”
• “There was a lot of enthusiasm for Adolf Hitler…he was a very, very powerful leader.”
• “History would record Adolf Hitler as the statesman of the Twentieth Century.”
• Had the Allies allied themselves with Nazi Germany, “I think the world would have been a better place…we should have stayed neutral [in World War Two].”
• Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel was “prosecuted and persecuted…I think he should have been protected by the authorities.”
• A Nazi flag at his home? “I probably have one somewhere.”
And so on, and so on.
See you in court room 31 at 10:00 a.m.
CROSS-EXAMINATION STARTS TODAY
Cross-examination of the plaintiff starts at about 2 p.m. at the Elgin Street courthouse. I don't know what he will say, but here is sampling of the sorts of things he has said in the past.
There is lots more, too.
• On Jews:
“It is a measure of the virtually iron-clad control over the media by a small, wealthy, influential, devious, self-serving, duplicitous, racist, alien pressure group that the obvious truths about the origins and nature of WW II are still considered beyond discussion.”
• On the Holocaust:
“Surely, 55 years after the end of the War, no legitimate purpose is served by attempting to perpetuate this vicious anti-German hate propanganda…the "six million" canard has long since been discredited…When the true history of the sinister origin and purposes of World War II emerges, if ever, it will show a very different picture from that of a struggle to "save civilization from Nazi tyranny". It will show that Germany was our natural ally, was the victim of a war contrived by a vengeful minority, that Godless, expansionist communism and avaricious Zionism were the true enemies of Mankind, that Western Civilization was the loser and that the only winners, as in the case of virtually all wars, were the money-changers who, as Bronfman so brazenly demonstrates, continue to profit.”
• On blacks and immigrants:
“[Immigration] was introduced despite the ample evidence, readily available from the experience in the United States and other countries, that blacks (negroes), the òriginal intended beneficiaries, are inherently unassimilable and a source of insoluble social problems both institutional and private…In the long run it will result inevitably in a metamorphosis of the country from a relatively comfortable, homogeneous Christian-European union to a turbulent, low-wage multi-racial, multicultural polyglot, essentially without national character, without cohesion, without identity, without historical integrity and without common purpose.”
• On convicted Holocaust denier David Irving:
“I’ve known David Irving for many years and have found him to be an honest, insightful and objective historian dedicated to exploring and revealing the truth.”
A story in today's Citizen is here.
It presents a slightly more benign view of Ian Verner Macdonald.
Warren's Magical Ottawa Gastronomical Tour continues. Current location: the Colonnade on Metcalfe, for a combination. Bliss is this.
Later, I plan to meet various OLP louts, and we'll pick fights with CPC staffers at Darcy McGee's.
Quite a few folks, from all over, have written to ask how today went.
I'm not sure how to even begin
to answer that one.
THE OFFER "WAS NOT ACKNOWLEDGED"
Nice shot! "...and I guarantee you: the Harper War Room will spend half a million dollars before noon on the political significance of the gentleman in the front row who is blinking. They certainly wouldn't want to be focussed on the state of the economy, or minor stuff like that!"
W@AL: THE OTTAWA TRAVELOGUE BEGINS
So there I was in Ottawa, thinking about Jason Kenney.
Jason wants you to forget about the Reform Conservative Party's history. He wants you to think they are "tolerant" and "diverse."
That's because his party is the one that had MPs who quoted Hitler approvingly. And who said non-whites should be "moved to the back." And, in one campaign, had a candidate who declared that there is an "Asian invasion." And, in the most recent campaign, whose candidates and staffers suggested First Nations people were all drunks, and that you wouldn't want an immigrant next door, because they tend to be criminals.
Anyway. Jason Kenney needs to come clean on that, wouldn't you agree?
Time for the best soup, at the best Chinese restaurant in the world - where I have been coming for 30 years.
And where people whose party talks about "Asian invasions" aren't welcome.
As I pack my bags for a long stay in Ottawa, I see the story below in Jean Pelletier's hometown paper. The fact that it was written tells me that others agree - the Harper administration should do the right thing, and finally drop their cheap and cruel appeal against M. Pelletier's legal victory.

Jean Pelletier (1935-2009)
Jean Pelletier - the former mayor of Québec City, a recipient of the Order of Canada, and the Chief of Staff to Jean Chrétien - died a few hours ago. A lot of us are very sad about the loss of this great man. He served Canada with conviction and honour and dignity.
I don't want to get into it this morning. But, as many of you know, one of the reasons I returned to the Liberal Party of Canada was the despicable and cruel decision of Stephen Harper's party to drag a dying man through the courts - when they had no prospect of victory whatsoever, and which they privately acknowledged.
A few months ago, I made a personal request to the highest levels of the Harper administration to leave Jean Pelletier alone, and drop their doomed-to-failure appeal. I do so again, now that he is gone.
who reads this website. If your side has any decency left, you will leave Jean Pelletier in peace.
IN AN OTTAWA COURTROOM NEXT WEEK
Starting next Monday, I'm going to be back in Ottawa for a while. I'm going to be there for political stuff, but also for something else.
In April 1996, while still living in Vancouver, I appeared on CBC Newsworld to talk about right-wing extremism. Many, many months afterwards, I received word that Ian Verner Macdonald was suing me and the CBC for defamation.
Macdonald is an Ottawa man who is a former Canadian diplomat. He was also, as I and others have documented, a supporter of far right causes who calls the Holocaust a "concoction of lies." He socialized with the leaders of the Ku Klux Klan, the Nationalist Party and allowed neo-Nazi skinheads to use his property for "Aryan" rallies; he has been a vocal defender of Ernst Zundel, David Irving and Malcolm Ross. Things he has written are found here
His latest lawyer is Douglas H. Christie, who has also been counsel to Zundel, Jim Keegstra and various neo-Nazi groups. In February 1993, the Law Society of Upper Canada found that he had made "common cause" with anti-Semitic "lunatics." More about Christie is found here.
After 13 years,
the lawsuit is finally coming to trial. It starts Monday morning, and it may go for weeks.
Obviously, I don't intend to do say or write anything that will interfere with the trial. But if you are in Ottawa and want to come by the Elgin Street courthouse and offer your support, we'd be honoured to see you.
I won't predict what will happen - other than to say that I am confident that the truth will prevail.
I've been waiting 13 years for this, and now it is finally happening.
YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHERE I WAS TONIGHT
LIVE FROM CBC, REAL SERIOUS-LIKE AND STUFF
Warren 'Warren' Kinsella prepares for an interview on CBC Radio's 'The House' with Kathleen 'Not Kathy' Petty, for broadcast tomorrow. Warren is furrowing his brow to fool you into thinking he is intelligent. It was CBC, it was radio, and it seemed like the thing to do at the time.
And here's what I told her about: Ignatieff vaults Liberals into tie with Tories, poll suggests (Poll-Ignatieff)
Source: The Canadian Press
Jan 9, 2009 15:00
OTTAWA - A new poll suggests the Liberal party has bounced back into contention now that Michael Ignatieff is at the helm.
The Nanos Research survey, provided exclusively to The Canadian Press, suggests the Liberals have moved into a virtual tie with the governing Tories.
Liberal support stood at 34 per cent, one point ahead of the Conservatives and up eight points from the Liberals' dismal showing in the Oct. 14 election under the leadership of Stephane Dion.
The poll suggests the Liberal resurgence was particularly pronounced in Quebec, where the party vaulted into the lead with 39 per cent support to 29 per cent for the Bloc Quebecois, 17 per cent for the Tories and 14 per cent for the NDP.
The telephone poll of 1,003 Canadians was conducted Jan. 3-7 and is considered accurate within 3.1 percentage points 19 times in 20.
A voter honeymoon with Ignatieff, who was hastily installed as leader last month, appeared to be the driving force behind the Liberal bounce.
