THIS WEEK'S POWER PLAY PANEL THING

Powers has ditched his glasses. That means only one thing: he's single, girls.

I had lots of mean stuff to say, but Tim didn't give me an opening. Maybe next week.

SKIPPY STALIN UPDATE

This replaces the posting that was here earlier.

We offered a reward for the true identity of a Toronto man named "Skippy Stalin" because he was bragging about doing damage to our business. It's okay to take shots at me, and plenty do, but not anyone else around me. We're after him in a civil action, as a result.

The woman behind whom he cowardly registered his web site - to avoid being detected - contacted me to ask that we keep her out of it. Her name was taken out of a comment on this web site as soon as I could get to a computer - but, as I told her, all of her information is still on the web registry, thanks to her friend. She regrets that.

Now, I get word that "Skippy" posted this, along with similar messaging in the post still up at his web site:

"Let's make a deal!...Knowing what a pain in the as Warren is, it's safe to say that he's pissed more than a few folks off in his day. Those folks, one presumes, would like to take up their grievances with him in person. Other folks have that information.

i'm sure that Mr. Kinsella has pissed off any number of people in his day that would like to see him getr his. You might be a former housekeeper. You might be a traffic cop who he gve some attitude to. You might be at telephone operator who didn't like the cut of his jib. Or you might just be a schoolteacher who think he's a bad parent. Whatever,

I can't exactly pay you for Warren's home address. Like I said, I'm way too broke for that. But what I can do is set up an eBay like service.

If you really, really hate Warren, I can hook you up with somebody who has his address. Maybe you can get together and work it out, Or something. That really isn't for me to care about, now is it?...it's not like anybody could get hurt, and maybe somebody really, really wants to meet Warren at his house. I won't make a dime from the venture. I just like the adventure of it all.

Sure, you can meet him at [work address]. But he isn't going to be as welcoming as he would be at home, now would he? I doubt that you'd get warm cup of hot chocolate at Daisy, but you just might at Casa Kinsella. Wouldn't it be great if you could discuss, say, his book, right on his doorstep?

If you want to sell or buy that information, please e-mail me..."

So far, this morning, I've received a note from a William Wittmeyer, wbwittmeyer@gmail.com, who seems to be a supporter of "Skippy," and he has said he plans to "shoot" me.

We've therefore referred the posting above to the police, because it's possible what "Skippy" is doing is a criminal matter. In the meantime, we still want to serve him in a civil matter. So the offer for his name, or even his lawyer's name, still stands.

Bottom line: there are no secrets on the Internet. If you are motivated enough, you can find out the identity of any anonymous creep.

Worth keeping in mind, "Skippy."

UPDATE: Got him! He's M.J. Sheppard. Lives in Toronto, has worked as a private detective, blah blah blah. Has written under his own name, but not often. And is considered scum, even by his closest friends.

At the hospital last night, someone introduced themselves to me. We chatted.

She: "Are blogs going to replace the news media?"

Me: "No. We're entertainment, not news. There's a difference."

WHY MICHAEL WILL BE PRIME MINISTER, PART [FILL IN BLANK]

”The Ignatieff effect:” that has a certain ring to it. I liked this part, too: “In the meantime, the Liberal team around Mr. Ignatieff is over-joyed at the progress made since he became leader. “It feels like 1993 all over again,” said one veteran, referring to the period before Jean Chrétien became Prime Minister. MPs say the mood in the party is the best it has been in six or seven years.” What Ivison writes is true: Ignatieff has brought together Chrétien people, Martin people, Dion people, and the caucus is in better shape than it’s been in a long time. We are not – not – going to underestimate our opponent, who is wily politician. But it certainly feels good to be a federal Liberal, these days.
The Conservatives are losing it. As Riley writes: “Masterful strategist Stephen Harper -- the man who was inching Canada, through blandishments and threats, toward his reactionary vision -- appears to be losing his grip…” We don’t intend to build a campaign on stumbles by the Reformatories – that’s bad strategy. But it is a fact, as others have noted before me, that governments defeat themselves. And the Harper regime is energetically defeating itself, day after day. It’s wonderful to watch.
…and while the economy is burning, the Conservative leader fiddles with photo ops. The Prime Minister is an economist, we’ve been told. So where is his economic prescription for a Canada where records are being set, daily, for bankruptcies and job losses? Cavorting with dragons and Bonhomme is fun, I suppose, but it doesn’t address the fears of Canadian families facing a very uncertain future. At all.

TVO REDUX

Someone senior associated with the publicly-funded network wanted to speak to me last night. I told him/her there was no point. The damage had been done.

Round-up here and here and here and here and here.

They're going to wear this mistake for a long time.

UPDATE: Here's an important question: the PMO's designated Conservative Party spokesman, Ezra Levant, defends Shaidle - who says, inter alia, that Islam is "a sick, sick religion," that Muslim children are "parasites," that Sikhs are "backward foreigners who shit on the hands that feed them," that the poor are "lazy and stupid," that First Nations people are "parasites [who] extort tax dollars for booze, smokes and junk food." Is that the official Conservative Party of Canada position, to get into bed with the likes of Shaidle? Is it, Levant pal Jason Kenney? Is Levant - who wants Quebec to separate, so his party can go after First Nations, who he calls "ethnic separatists," as well as kill off multiculturalism and bilingualism, along with women's rights and enviromental protection - representing the views of the Conservative of Party of Canada?

The unemployed Conservative Party spokesman has never recanted, and he's never apologized for his extremism. One can only assume Stephen Harper and Co. are fine with his views, and his association with a bigot like Kathy Shaidle.

Why is the Conservative government associated with Levant - and, by extension now, Shaidle? Anyone?

CANWEST DEATHWATCH?

This Reuters story suggests that the CanWest media empire is soon to slip this mortal coil. I don't know if that is true - but the underlying trends, as the experts say, are not very promising.

As I suggested to a senior and acclaimed journalist late yesterday, what this story makes me feel, mostly, is sad - sad for the journalists and editors who have to live with this kind of unending uncertainty. Sad for their families, too, who have to be just as scared.

Because they're journalists, none of them will say anything about any of this depressing stuff publicly, of course. That's the irony about journalists - they truly favour freedom of speech. But when it comes to discussion of their own affairs - actual circulation numbers, unethical conduct by their colleagues, significant errors, dwindling readership - you will never meet a more censorious bunch. The phrase "circle the wagons" was practically invented for them.

Anyway, I used to be a Southam guy, and a proud member of the Newspaper Guild, too. I really, really hope this works out for the journalists and the editors at CanWest.

For the owners and senior managers there? Not so much.

TVO DEIGNS TO RESPOND PUBLICLY TO SHAIDLE MESS

Here.

But it's not much of a response. It's kind of useless, in fact, because Steve told me personally that "frankly, Warren, I haven't spent any time on this yet today...I haven't put mind to it yet at all." So if Steve wasn't in on this decision, who was?

In this non-response, TVO just mainly post what I have written. And if you're here, you already know what I think. What, if anything, was TVO thinking?

Specifically, what remains unanswered is why TVO was so dumb - so monumentally insensitive - as to give a platform to someone who writes things like what I've re-posted below.

What's your answer to that, TVO?

· On Islam: "...your religion is fucking retarded...ungrateful beligerent foreign savages...These are people who love watching beheading videos on the internet...A sick, sick religion. Basically Scientology with bombs. Pathetic whiny losers."
· On Muslim and Pakistani immigrants: "Muslims...most of them can't even read...What we really need to do is stop immigration from Pakistan and other crazy Muslim countries filled with illiterate, violent tribal peasants..."
· On Muslim children: they are “parasites.”
· On a group of Muslim students who object to some statements by Mark Steyn: they are “motherfucking parasites.”
· On Muslims: "Muslims always have to be on top, in reverse proportion to their ability to do anything with competence or creativity."
· On Indians: they are “parasites” who “extorted tax dollars [for] booze, smokes and junk food. Not to mention free everything else, including university educations they don't bother getting.”
· On blacks: “…there is nothing ‘compelling’ about a black man impregnating a white woman. In more than one Toronto neighbourhood, that's what they call Saturday night.”
· On the only people who can get excited about Barack Obama: “black, stupid or both.”
· On Jamaicans: “Just think of how much Jamaican immigrants contribute to our culture and economy: monotonous, illiterate music that all sounds the same, filthy hairstyles, those little tricoloured Rasta doohickies.”
· On the blacks of New Orleans: they are “pathetic losers” who cannot have their IQs raised “a single point.”
· On the poor: they are poor because they are “too lazy and stupid to a) finish high school and/or b) keep their pants on.…I don’t care about the poor. They’re no more real than Bigfoot.”
· On AIDS: “From the beginning, AIDS activism has been more about mainstreaming the gay "lifestyle" than saving lives.”
· On Sikhs: "Backward foreigners [who] shit on hand that feeds them...Unable to invent their own iconic product due to too much time spent worshipping monkeys and cows, setting women on fire and obsessing over imperceptible differences in each other's skin colour..."
· On blind people: "Giving blind people real jobs...is not working out."
· On Chinese: "[They are] spitting and shooting snot on the sidewalk...throwing broken crates of rotten bock choy all over Spadina Avenue [and] eating dubious, illegal foodstuffs" [and cause SARS.]

SHAIDLE SAYS SHE WANTS TO BE CANCELLED

Click to protest - and
use the banner on your site!

Below, Shaidle's posting at "Small Dead Animals" a few minutes ago. And, here, on her own web site.

But TVO still plans to have her on?

Why? This is turning into farce, TVO. Lots of taxpayers don't want our tax dollars used in this way; she doesn't want the platform you insist on giving her.

Why is this even a discussion?

Shaidle:

"Countless Chinese people in Toronto DO hoark on the sidewalk -- which is a known spreader of disease.

They DO leave broken crates of bok choy on Spadina

And they DO eat what are, in my humble opinion, dubious, possibly illegal foodstuffs.

Ever eaten street food in Beijing? Ever left your house, let alone the country?

Try harder.

The truth is often unpleasant.

Frankly, I wish TVO WOULD cancel me tonight. I'd rather stay home and watch Falling Down again.

SHAIDLE ON TVO

According to her web site, "Five Feet of Fury" is on TVO tonight - and, I presume, she's getting paid to be there.

Personally, I'm not enthusiastic about Kathy Shaidle getting provincial tax dollars, however small, to spew her venom. She's entitled to do that on her web site, and she does, day in and day out.

Below is just a small sampling of what she's written. Do you think TVO has made the right call, here? I don't.

I hope to hear from them, and the Ministry responsible for TVO, later on today. In the meantime, here's Shaidle:

· On Islam: "...your religion is fucking retarded...ungrateful beligerent foreign savages...These are people who love watching beheading videos on the internet...A sick, sick religion. Basically Scientology with bombs. Pathetic whiny losers."
· On Muslim and Pakistani immigrants: "Muslims...most of them can't even read...What we really need to do is stop immigration from Pakistan and other crazy Muslim countries filled with illiterate, violent tribal peasants..."

UPDATE: More here and here and here and here.

UPDATE: Comment just posted by Mike: "Sent a letter and called them directly...Warren, they appear to be getting the message. The woman I talked to said they had been getting calls and emails all morning and they were going to talk to the producer."

Personally, I heard promptly this morning from Paikin, who is a good and decent person. He told me the relevant producer would contact me, although that has not happened yet.

I have also written the Minister responsible, Kathleen Wynne, at kwynne.mpp.co@liberal.ola.org. Her executive assistant is Tom Teahen, at thomas.teahen@ontario.ca. I know both, and they also are good people.

Keep at it, folks. As BCL and Scott T. have posted, you can email TVO about this disgrace here: askTVO@tvo.org

UPDATE: The New Democrats have taken note, and are (appropriately) angry, too. I am also told that Kathleen Wynne is furious, as are other people in government.

But from TVO, online and off, nothing. Nada. I suspect they are going to let it happen, which is a disgrace. The only way they could (partially) redeem themselves is to put the above statements to Shaidle - which are far worse than pretty much anything Ernst Zundel, Jim Keegstra, Terry Long or other bigots ever said to me in interviews, frankly - and see how she responds.

UPDATE: More opposition here and here.

LIKELY FINAL UPDATE: BCL has just heard from the show's producer that they're bringing her on, notwithstanding the expressions of anger and protest. Those interested in further protest can contact TVO here, and state - as I will - that future campaigns for public funding, in any context, will be vigorously opposed.

In other words, don't give them a nickel. "Free speech" isn't interchangable with "suspending one's critical faculties." Except at TVO, apparently.

CRANKY BITS AND PIECES (WELL, EXCEPT FOR THE LAST ONE)

This wouldn’t be happening if Toronto had a mayor, part 2,471: My one-person focus group, my wife, erupted when she read this headline early this morning. “Doesn’t this idiot mayor realize people are hurting? That there are bankruptcies all over the place, and people are losing their jobs? And he wants to raise taxes again?” Couldn’t have said it better myself. On behalf of a dozen centrist politico friends, all equally fed up: Toronto needs a mayor who isn’t a New Democrat automaton. We’ll help get you elected if you’re any good. How’s that for a “Help Wanted” ad?
More recession madness: Kathleen Wynne, Ontario’s Minister of Education, is genuinely one of the most respected and admired politicians I have ever met. But, this morning on CBC Radio, the quoted nutty union boss said she’s “trying to resuscitate her political career” because she wants to avoid kids losing school days, as they did so often during the Harris era. Here’s a tip, pal: if there’s one politician in Canada who doesn’t need his or her career “resuscitated,” it’s Wynne. If there’s a union boss who needs his credibility resuscitated today, it’s you.
PMO knew about sexual harassment allegations against one of their new Senators, but appointed him anyway? Have the Harpies lost their minds, completely? What was the Hellfire rush? Couldn’t they have waited to jam him into the Red Chamber, until the complaints had been addressed, one way or another? Unbelieveable. Watch for this one to get very messy.
The Conservative’s Change-The-Channel Strategy continues apace: Last week it was Racist Warren and donations to the LPC and a few other things – anything to get voters to forget about the records being set in bankruptcies and job losses. This gun control stunt is the latest (as the sharp-eyed BCer in TeeDot noticed last week) CPC attempt to get you to forget how pathetic these guys are on the economy. It’ll be divisive, again, but it won’t work. Canadians are smarter than this neocon “government.”
Okay, I’m not cranky about this one at all: THE LIBERAL PARTY OF CANADA IS AHEAD OF THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY IN POPULAR SUPPORT. Not by much, yet, but ahead. The trendlines are clear: under Michael Ignatieff, we’re going up, the Reform Conservatives are going down. Change is coming!

YOU JUST ASSUMED I WOULD POST THAT HARRIS-DECIMA POLL, DIDN'T YOU?

Am I that predictable? Am I that obvious? Am I, as my buddy Powers cruelly observed, the Iggy Infatuation Corner?

Well, dammit, I refuse to be so easy to categorize! I won't post that poll - stating, as it does, "a new poll suggests the Tories' federal leadership advantage has evaporated since Michael Ignatieff took over the Liberal helm. The Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey indicates the newly minted Liberal leader is viewed more favourably than either Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper or NDP Leader Jack Layton. Indeed, Ignatieff was the only national leader to score a net positive rating, with 43 per cent of respondents saying they had a favourable impression of him versus 32 per cent who had an unfavourable opinion..."

Nor, for your information, will I post that the CP story stated that "the poll also suggests Conservatives and Liberals are statistically tied, with 31 per cent and 33 per cent support respectively, well ahead of the NDP at 15 per cent, the Greens at 10 per cent and the Bloc Quebecois at 10 per cent."

You are all just going to have to elsewhere for that information, I'm afraid. That the Liberal Party of Canada is ahead, and that the Conservatives are headed for a historic rout. And stuff like that.

No sir, I simply refuse to be that predictable, here in The Iggy Infatuation Corner©.

UPDATE: I'm advised by friends at CP that the "respectively" in their copy was misplaced. The edge is to the Cons in this one, but obviously not by much. My apologies for re-reporting an error.
