Rush Ford gets cocky

You know, reading Linda’s piece, I don’t recall Doug Ford being so critical when he was calling me and asking me to join their campaign. Funny, that.

Cocky overconfident opponents are a gift. Enjoy the campaign. The chances are improving they will make a mistake.

  2. Paul R. Martin says:

Doug Ford sounds a might too cocky for his brother’s own good. At the beginning of the campaign the Curious George camp was too cocky and look at what happened to their balloon.

Simply, fighting the Ford’s is akin to fighting Snake Oil Salesmen or Rainmakers. but, people like the promise of relief and release from City Council oppression and excesses, and therefore you need bigger medicine or bigger promises from a brighter salesman or someone who can expose or refrute the promises. It’s a tough thing to do. If he gets elected, he will not have control or support of Council and then what? Well, people will wait a long long time for it to rain or for relief from a snake bite.
As mayor, imagine the embarrassment if his football time doesn’t finish first place this year.

    Warren,

You’re one hell of a lot better off strategically speaking with Kinsella on board than against you. The only bigger mistake is to sideline him. Once you’ve done that, the road to perdition for Conservatives is quite suddenly a lot more difficult to accomplish…

  5. Beverly says:

Toronto Mayor Doug Ford …. get used to it, Torontonians..!!!

I think the most important line of Linda’s piece is this one

“Perhaps there?s a problem right there. Ford?s opponents still operate under old campaign rules ? i.e., big announcements after Labour Day ? while the whole universe is changing around them. It?s like the axiom, life is what happens to you while you?re busy making plans.”

It’s as true municipally as it will eventually be provincially and yes, federally. Suddenly the guy leading the change in the rules looks better and better because in the end the messaging has been consistent and one resonating with the average Joe.

People are really tiring of politics as usual I’m finding.

For what it’s worth I believe Smitherman lost this contest before it had begun.

If Rossi comes up close to Ford’s message and adds a “little something” different it just might thrust Rossi ahead in the home stretch.

The Mice summoned a council to decide how they might best devise means of warning themselves of the approach of their great enemy the Cat. Among the many plans suggested, the one that found most favour was the proposal to tie a bell to the neck of the Cat, so that the Mice, being warned by the sound of the tinkling, might run away and hide themselves in their holes at his approach. But when the Mice further debated who among them should thus “bell the Cat”, there was no one found to do it. (Aesop)

Don’t kid yourself, Doug Ford. You’re not dealing with the Fly, but with the Cat, and it ain’t goin’ to be pretty…

    • #562 says:

The irony of your metaphor…. when you put a bell on a cat, the cat learns to walk quieter when hunting. We tried to save the chipmunks at our cottage and put bells on the cats. All we did was teach the cats to be better hunters. I can’t wait to see how this political cat fight ends.

To Warren… in federal politics I respectfully disagree with you but for my beloved Toronto, fight like hell and WIN please!!!!

  8. Andrew says:

A lot of time and more importantly, money is spent to win a job that in end doesn’t pay that much.

If the amount of money spent in political races was applied to solving problems or social needs, wouldn’t it be a better world?

It is actually laughable that Doug Ford considers himself council-ready. A far better choice is Cadigia Ali, an Italian-trained M.D. and community leader in Etobicoke. She is the sort of person we need at city council. Not another Ford.

But WK and the Rossi rescue unit are climbing Mt. Everest in this campaign in search of a W. Nobody (not even John Tory!) has ever been able to win without being a councillor first. This bodes well for Rob Ford, and not Rocco, George, Sarah and the like. If we are rolling the dice here and going by the historical record, then it looks as though Ford is at least a 2-1 favorite at this point.

Of course, nothing is impossible. Ford has already proven that irrational dreams can become a reality, for notwithstanding his history of offensive statements, lying, and an appalling voting record, he has become the “front runner”. Nobody could have imagined that even a year ago when under the NDP-left rule at City Hall, he was the joke of council.

  10. Scott says:

I don’t like Doug Ford, but I don’t think being an Italian-trained M.D. means one is suitable to be council-ready.

I would like some business leaders in the government. Real business leaders though, not ones who had stickers from Daddy on them at birth.

  11. Derek L says:

Ali is a community leader, Ford is not. The Ford’s like to talk turkey, and those are the straight goods.
