Ari Up

I was very, very sad to learn of her death yesterday. The news was broken by the man who is, in fact, her step-father, John Lydon.

Ari was a huge help to me on Fury’s Hour, and I can’t emphasize enough the importance she had – as an artist, as a woman – on the punk movement.

Here’s Ari and the Slits doing ‘Typical Girls.’  She was anything but.

She was great, really great. And never that girlsy “Typical Girl” – GOOD for her!

I did not know you wrote that book, what was John Lyndon like to interview? It seems that while he isn’t formally educated, he is bright, nasty and doesn’t suffer fools.

“I’m no one’s lap dog, you can’t put me on a leash, and that was the attitude of it, fuck off.”

Boy oh boy, I love that one!

I haven’t been near a computer or radio for a few days and almost fell off my chair when I read this. What a sad day it is. Ari was a true original and will be missed.

PS – Fury’s Hour is a great book.
