So, there I was on King Street East

I took a wrong turn, went up a darkened flight of stairs, and – whammo – these guys got me.

Just a hunch, but I suspect some heads are exploding in Ottawa, this morning.  Hope so, anyway.

I frickin knew it, I knew it, what about Powers?

    • Warren says:

I told them he’s a star and they should hire him. But who listens to me, anyway?

      • Paul R. Martin says:

Some Liberals do listen to you. The rest of us read your comments for your scintillating insights and sense of humour.

        • Cath says:

Yep, humour is often seriously lacking in Canadian politics Paul. I appreciate that about this blog too…..perhaps if the Warren and Tim(Powers) show gels we could request a Kraft Dinner grudge match and get the best ratings EVER for a political news show? I’d tune in.

      • Cath says:

“But who listens to me, anyway?”

those of us who “get it” that’s who:-)

Excellent adventure by both sides. It makes life and politics so much more interesting I think.

        Good luck my friend.

    Congratulations, Warren! Nice column.

The head that is exploding the most is your new colleague, and new best pal, Ezra Levant. Hell, this might just make him turn to Iggy for solace.

    Good luck!

  3. Will M. says:

    No thanks.

Being on the right (to you wrong) side of the political spectrum, I think it’s great to see you accept this job Warren. What makes a debate good to watch is seeing both sides of an argument resonably presented with points and counterpoints. You and Powers would definately be a must watch.

    Congrats.

    I effen love it.

First smart thing you’ve done career-wise in as long as I can personally remember.

  7. Cath says:

Pretty sad news about the death of Beaver’s mom. She was everyone’s mom back then. Weirdest feeling in the world as time passes.

  8. Robbie says:

What a fella will do to get a spike in blog traffic! Prediction: your fourth year anniversary column will be all about how Rocco Rossi rocks City Hall and gets the keys to the city. Hope to see you and Powers on Sun TV. Just put on Beach Boys ‘Heroes and Villains’. Good luck on your new writing career.

Okay – this is definitely worthy of a Hitler Parody.

    VAS? NEIN! NEIN! NEIN!

Missionary work among the heathen has long been thought a noble deed. But I fear for your soul.

A more hateful and manipulative nest of snakes and ciphers than these distorters of truth is difficult to imagine.

Sure, I read the Sun. It comes free with the bacon and eggs at my favorite breakfast joint, and fits on the table.

At first I would refuse to read it, on principle, but then I began to, so I would have some understanding of how it is that the little people have such odd ideas. Now I read it for its sheer entertainment value, much like I read the National Enquirer when in the supermarket aisle.

It’s quite hilarious, a caricature of itself. The “financial page”? – It’s green, so folks will know it’s about money, and has 4 pictures and 50 words possibly lifted from USA Today. Reportage – perhaps 3 or 4 tabloid pages – is confined to sticking their nose into the latest suburban personal tragedy, and smarmy remarks about politicians, designed to reinforce the opinions of readers that they are smarter, despite, in most cases, their having far less education and far fewer achievements.

The rest of the paper is mostly car advertisements, sports filler, and a picture of a trashy-looking young woman whose father must feel terribly sad and ashamed.

The section that you no doubt are concerned with is the two tabloid page “opinions” section; largely a fact-free zone, penned by those of the Rush Limbaugh school of distortion and un-truths, but who lack his talent.

Still, it’s a terrific strategy by the Sun; totally win-win. Either they co-opt you to their demagoguery, and get to crow about your neutering forever, or you serve as a bear-baiter, compelling their audience of haters to read your columns in order to re-charge their bile on a daily basis.

It might be fun at first, but I sense that this may not end well.

…on the other hand, many conservative voters have had the epiphany that Mr. Harper is just the same, old, same old. He hasn’t exactly lived up to their expectations. English speaking men of pallor are still being discriminated against. Mr. Harper is still allowing those immigrant brown doctors and Asian computer engineers to take their jobs. And the women-folk are still getting abortions, and guns still need to be registered. Don’t even start on boys marrying boys.

This is the perfect opportunity for a Trojan horse play, whereby an opinion piece scribe consistently makes the case that the Conservatives are just like the Liberals, but without the financial acumen, charm, fashion sense, or shared values with other free and democratic nations and peoples of this world.

      Kinsella, you’re a fucking genius.

  11. fritz says:

Congratulations; I guess; although I doubt you’ll last 3 months at the SUN before you write something outrageous that will get you fired. At least I hope so. 🙂

  12. Shavers says:

Gordon Campbell connecting with voters ? The one who is Premier of BC? Umhhh…no. Never has. Never will. Seen as a competent manager of the economy -yes. Is not the red scare – yes? Connecting with voters-no. Never happened.

  13. Namesake says:

Well, if you thought you had a lot of enemies & hate mail now, just wait a few days/columns. Hopefully they’re paying you more than the $150 per column Ezracrable used to get… but try to get it in advance… in cash. They’re not exactly flush with cash over there, despite the personal wealth of the owner.

One of the many things that bugs me about the Sun, tho’, is how they close their particularly egregiously misinformed or misleading columns to comments.

Like Mercedes Stephenson’s almost ‘Truther’-like dark musings today, on “How the Emiratis were able to single out which plane the minister and CDS were on is an interesting question in itself, as aircraft do not publish passenger manifests”*

    — even though the UAE had already explicitly debunked that notion at the beginning of the week: that “it was disappointed over the Canadian government’s attempts to leak distorted information,” since it had already notified everyone concerned that it had closed its airspace to Canadian flights well _before_ MacKay’s flight was ever in the air.**

Well, at least you won’t have to worry about wrestling with pesky editors & fact-checkers over then, there: you can just print any ol’ thing the moment it rolls off your ‘puter.

  14. Greg says:

Congrates. I hope you shake up the Sun. I look forward to your articles, a combination of informative and entertaining.

  15. WesternGrit says:

Brilliant. I look forward to actually picking up a copy of the Van Sun that gets left around work the odd time… This is totally your style… in the face activism. You need to shock ’em in their home court, so to speak… A lot of people were aghast when Limbaugh first took to the airwaves in a big way… Slowly, he won over many “mainstream” American followers…

Keep rockin’ the free world WK!

    Break a leg amigo.
