Just now at the Monarch Tavern

So there we were at Charlie and Tenio’s annual Gentlemen’s Lunch, having a festive time, and all of a sudden – what to our astonished eyes should appear, etc. – a nasty political scrap over by the bar!

I am reliably informed the fellow from Northern Ontario was not victorious.

Come on! That is an awesome photo! Well done sir.

It is also very cool the Chretien is at The Monarch. Looks like a good way to spend a Friday afternoon.

  2. Paul says:

This photo is awesome on so many levels!

  3. Art Williams says:

They are thousands of progressives looking at that picture who are wishing he’d just done that 15 years earlier! LOL

  4. Brian says:

Priceless. If it were auctioned on a day when I had money to spend, I’d spend it.

  5. Makes a great Christmas Card

  6. james Smith says:

Geeeze, the one Friday I don’t get a veal sangwiche & eat it up the street at the Monarch this happens!
    Dang!

  7. Bill says:

    LOL Brilliant!

  8. Iris Mclean says:

JC is exercising a lot more self-control than I ever could.

  9. Wannabeapiper says:

Wow man JC has one hell of a grip! Hope he squeezed really really hard. The old sleeper hold never fails.

  10. Cath says:

Just two ordinary guys doing what ordinary guys do…..most ordinary folks can relate and feel pretty good about that photo.
That’s why both these guys were so successful…..and why Mr. Ignatieff is…well….not!

  11. Shaun says:

    Ah, the Shawinigan handshake!

  12. Ah… vintage Chretien. Makes me grin from ear to ear.

  13. ERNEST LUSTIG says:

wHAT A SPOT. i WISH i HAD A PENNY FOR EVERY VEAL SANDWICH AND BEER i HAD AT THE mONARCHMAny years ago. Would have loved attend. Is the veal place still next door. Eleanor CaplaNS SON HAD HIS FIRST RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE ON THE 2ND FLOOR AT THE MONARCH. WOW COULD THOSE WALLS TELL A FEW STORIES

  14. Cath says:

just showed this to my husband and his comment was “Ah, the good old days.” Then followed with a suggestion to you Warren to go for a matched set and see if you can get Harper and McGuinty to complete your collection.

  15. Student501 says:

    Ah, yes.

“The Shawinigan Handshake”, there can only be One.

  16. Yeah, nothing screams funny like assaulting an antipoverty protester *GROAN*. I’ll remember this the next time Liberals claim to be compassionate, thanks for posting this.

  17. Wannabeapiper says:

I looked at this a second time. It looks like JC is popping a zit 🙂

  18. eattv says:

There is a regrettable lack of the Shawinigan Handshake on Parliament Hill these days.

    • MetaKaizen says:

Agreed. The “Calgary Stampede” is more of a lifestyle choice than a devastating finishing move, and the “Harvard Shuffle” just makes me miss Chretien all the more.

  19. Jim says:

Now, had a Conservative PM committed assault and battery on a citizen in a public place, followed up by a gang tackle from the PM’s security detail; I doubt you lefties would be giggling about it.

  20. Wayne says:

    Too Funny!

  21. Iris Mclean says:

I’m sure there’s a bunch of folks in Walkerton, along with the families and friends Dudley George and Kimberley Rogers, who would be rolling on the floor laughing if they could see this.
    Or maybe not.

    • Herta says:

Thanks Iris, I appreciate your comment. I know it’s just guys rough-housing but, can’t help but remember some of the people who suffered under Mr.Harris.

  22. Paul R Martin says:

Too bad the Ontario Liberals and the Federal Liberals can’t get along so well. So far, the Premier has dumped one cabinet minister because he has been recruited by Iggy to run federally. The Toronto Star is reporting that Iggy is trying to recruit at least half a dozen Ontario Liberal MPP’s including 5 cabinet ministers. The Premier is not amused.

  23. James Curran says:

Did he choke the 407 back from Harris?

  24. D.I.D. says:

FEAR the Shawinigan Grip of Death! 😀

  25. gray says:

This ranks up there with “pepper steak”. I never voted for him, never will vote for his successors, but I smiled when he treated that sanctimonious little ass the way he deserved.

  26. Iris Mclean says:

Not sure why JC would want to ham it up with a two-bit thug.
Is it the irresistible lure of the golf courses next summer?
I hear Osprey Links is pretty cool… if you’re not a fish in Lake Nipissing.

  27. Lipman says:

    Iris:

Like it or not, that “two bit thug” was elected by Ontarians (some of whom you probably know) to two majority governments. Mike Harris’s egregious policies and his government’s record made me a liberal and had a profound influence on my political outlook. Harris is only infamous because loads of Ontarians plugged in his chainsaw.

    • Iris Mclean says:

@ Lipman. The Ontario voters were fine with the OPP killing Dudley George. The Ontario voters were fine with the poorest of the poor being thrown out of their homes to freeze on the streets as a result of the welfare cuts and the end of rent controls. . Ontario voters started to become alarmed when reasonably well off people started to die because of cuts to basic water and food safety regulations. When Harris finally quit politics to spend more time with his wife and kids, there was dancing in the streets. Just do a quick Google of “Kimberley Rogers” and then tell me what a fine humanitarian this guy was.

      • Herta says:

Iris, if you read the posts you will see that the “guys”are largely focussed on the political jokester aspect of the photo with no interest or thought to what actually happened when Mr. Harris was in power. People still don’t get what happened. If you were older, had suffered an illness, say cancer, exhausted your savings, lost your job, you had to practically strip yourself of any asset you might have had, including paid up funeral costs. Even this was considered a “cashable asset” and had to be liquidated if you expected to get any money through the welfare system. My husband could barely make himself ask prospective welfare clients about the funeral expenses never mind the other humiliations visited on them. To this day I remember Kimberly Rogers…what woman could not?
        Thank you for your comments.
