@stphnmaher: Launch of Liberal attack ads convince me there will definitely be an election this spring or not.

It occured to me this morning. You want to know how Liberals can prevent younger voters from voting Conservative? Keep showing that picture of him with Chad Kroeger from Nickelback.

Better yet, show him with Justin Bieber: notice — the same hair. (‘Luke, I am your father. Welcome to the dark side.’)

Just had a boo at the Liberal “attack” ads…which I don’t think come close to “attacking” at all. Very mild on subjects most ordinary Canadians don’t even have on their radars these days. The Fighter Jet ad has some respectable photos of Harper and some impressive shots of our jets in action. The Corporate Tax Cut ad moves in on NDP territory which they can’t be too happy about.

Simply – these ads will not dent the PM’s armor.

I’m not sure about the strategy of asking a question at the end rather than ending with a statement of fact. “Is this your Canada or is it Harper’s” – one and the same.

Oh and nothing promoting the LPOC leader at all or indication of what Ignatieff would do with these issues.

    • Mike says:

LPOC ought to use this image of Harper in their “attack” ads–goes to the heart of our PM’s real personality:

And I’m not sure we can put any stock in the feedback from CPC partisans, who surely aren’t the target audience, anyway. But thanks for writing in!

Oh, and in our Canada (which the PM wants to be unrecognizable when he’s through with it), it’s “armour,” and the PM’s is looking a wee bit rusty, since even Angus Reid’s bullish panellists are evenly split on whether they’re worse off after 5 years of him.

People are worried about buying groceries. Do YOU want to spend $16 billion for 65 airplanes? Without seeing if we could even get a better deal? The message is clear no money for groceries…lots of money for arms dealers.

    • The Doctor says:

I agree with Cath about the corporate tax cut ad, i.e., that it could have come straight out of the NDP war room. All the same stuff you tend to hear from Jack Layton about Big Corporations, articulated in ominous tones. So I wonder about that, trying to out-Dipper the Dippers.

I’ve yet to see polling data on the issue, but I can see the fighter jet thing working for the Liberals, mainly because I’m old enough to remember the EH-101 thing back in 1993, and Chretien spun that into political gold. Although so many things went right for the Liberals and wrong for the Tories in 1993, I suppose it’s difficult to say whether this or that issue was the cause . . .

    • Philip says:

Cath is underwhelmed by new LPC ads. Not exactly breaking news is it? Best tell the headline writers they can knock off and go home early.

    • Leon Brule says:

I agree with Cath. Those Fighter Jets, we helped develop and the ad about corporate taxcuts is dishonest. A taxcut is NOT a giving of taxpayer money. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Conservatives use that ad as an example of Liberal respect for taxpayers, which is not much given the ad’s blatant use of intellectual dishonesty

      • Namesake says:

We helped develop the Space Shuttle, too (with the Canadarm) so we could benefit from that technology & throw some business to our aerospace industry.

Did that mean we promised to buy 65 of them?

  3. james curran says:

What is that old adage again? Oh yes. Throwing good money after bad.

Unless these ads are the beginning of a prolonged and massive campaign of a trickle down theory whereby the ads at the end of the campaign are far more meaningful, the Liberals have FAILED to identify what is on the minds of Joe Canada. Hint: It ain’t jets.

Too bad too, cause I thought the “are you better off” theme was a winner.

  4. The “heart” of our Prime Minister’s personality was put very well on a comment that I read this morning…….”LARGE AND IN CHARGE”!!!!!!!!
Like another “LARGE AND IN CHARGE” prime minister was reputed to have said:”somebody has to be “da” boss.
Question(s):Can Canada afford to pay for an election? Can Canadians afford to pay for an election? Can the liberals really afford($) an election or can they afford not to??
Canadians like/love to flaunt themselves as being tolerent, inclusive and open to compromise……….except when it comes to politics.

  5. Malcolm Barry says:

Pierre Polievre states the Liberal ads were viscious attacks on Harper. Really, who would ever believe him?
The Liberals have stated their plan on the Jets and also on the Tax relief so lets get at the election and let the people decide. The Liberals have a plan and we can choose who we want as Prime Minister.

  6. Riley says:

Last year the CEO of Suncore made about $11 million scraping tar out of the ground. Harper wants to give his company even more tax cuts do he can make even more on stock options. Meanwhile you’ll pay more for gas and groceries and anything ended that get shipped by fossil fuel burning methods. Stephen Harper wrong PM wrong priorities. Is this your Canada or Suncore’s?

  7. Namesake says:

‘V’ for ObserVant; ‘E’ for Effort

  8. Dan says:

Pretty sure Harper already has name recgonition, and an associated brand identity with the Conservatives.

Saying another candidate’s name only works when that candidate has low name recgonition. Otherwise you look like an idiot when you say the Conservative Leader, the Repulpican candidate etc.

  9. new says:
