The Jim Watson Effect

Hire one of my best friends to be mayor, and look what happens to you!

When Burlington is the second best city in the country, you know the ranking system is based on how many homeless people the police can run out of town.

  2. Paul O says:

Yes, a year before Watson took office, Ottawa was ranked Number One! Or did you not notice that this is the third year in a row for the honour?

  3. Cynical says:

I think you might have reversed cause and effect. It is because Mr. Watson is such a capable and intelligent mayor that we rejected Mr. O’Brien’s reign of inadequacy, and elected him. Ottawans know they live in a good place (ranking aside) and want to keep it that way.
I voted for him, and will again.
In any case, he is a talented politician. I suspect even his enemies like him.

Sadly, four of the worst of the top ten are in BC…..:(

Seriously? You obviously don’t live in Ottawa – Ottawa gets a number one ranking not because of its municipal government but DESPITE its municipal government. In the 8+ years thati have lived here, that gang of intellectually challenged do-nothings – the O’Brien years included – have manage to complete precisely ZERO major projects. The Stranherd-Armstrong bridge? Still not done and completion in question with one of the principal companies going under. New bridge across to Quebec? Forget about it. Better road access to Quebec? How about a four lane lead up/from to the MacDonald Cartier bridge that requires traffic to slow to 30 km/h? LRT? What an ongoing joke that is – the latest from these deep thinkers is a single access point to office buildings with 40,000 workers – or you can walk six blocks to get to Elgin street to take in the establishments there. And this is at least third iteration of their wonderful LRT vision. Visions of a tunnel so they can all get a subway stop named after themselves. Lansdowne? We’ll be lucky to see the CFL back here before 2020. But if you want your sidewalk plowed when it’s 26 degrees outside, our gold-plated municipal works will do that for you – for a ridiculous property tax rate. Then there is the Save Water so We Can Justify Charging You More for Water Campaign – not enough revenue doncha know. Sometimes when I disagree with you Warren it can probably be put down to pure partisanship – but on this one you are truly out to lunch. I’d suggest the fish and chips at the Hintonburg Pub.
