Peter Lougheed

I am very sorry to hear this news, and I hope that it is not true. He is, truly, a great Canadian.

In the case of my family, we would never have come to Alberta had it not been for what Lougheed did for medicine, and medical research. He used government as a force for good, which is as it should be.

Premiers should follow Mr. Lougheed’s example. One can quibble with the policy decisions Premiers make, but his approach – to fiercely defend the interests of his province while at the same time understanding the importance of seeing a place for his province within a wider vision of Canada – is exactly how all Premiers whether they be PC, Liberal or NDP should view their jobs.

    Warren,

He’s a sterling-silver class act. If only today’s politicians could live up to his example.

So Don’s the appointed “get the editors ready” guy. Not surprising.

Back in the 80’s I had a friend who worked for an enviro non-profit. Calls me one day to cancel lunch. ” Have to get a grant application to Edmonton by close of business”, sez he.
“Wait”, sez I, ” every other day you issue a press release critical of the gov’t and you expect them to give you cash ? How can you pass on ginger fried beef for something so futile?”
” Actually we’ve got funding every year since Laugheed was elected”, came the response, ” they don’t often like what we say but they’ve told us our research and advocacy is helpful and important none the less”

Contrast that with today’s ” Harper Gov’t” muzzling scientists and gutting environmental reviews and you get a good idea of what true leadership is about.
