Forgive me for feeling somewhat vindicated

…two months after the fact. Better late than never, I suppose.

I never called him a racist, you know. I simply asked if his policies treated different people differently. If they distinguished between people based on race.

I await his apology to me, because I sure as shit withdraw mine to him.

(Oh, and here is video of his actual words. If they get the coverage they deserve, he’s done.)

At the outset I thought your apology was unnecessary and maybe a little over the top, but i live under a turnip, so what do I know.

    • que sera sera says:

Ya know, smelter, I totally fucking agree. The apology was unnecessary because the comment was completely valid. And the faux-shitstorm it unleashed was quite comical – until you realize the consequences which Toronto will pay dearly. Butterflies…..hurricanes.

To paraphrase for John Tory: Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it is raining.

    • Kevin T. says:

And what if Olivia Chow had been the kind of candidate that would have had her staffer’s… sorry, volunteer’s back after a little woodshedding, she probably would not have wiffled a typical challenge of leadership.

  2. !o! says:

I wish he was done, but I kinda think too many people are in the ‘anyone but Ford’ camp to move votes away from him unless Olivia looks poised to win.

  3. Randy V says:

In a scrum, John Tory was asked if he has stopped beating his wife. “No, I don’t know if I ever have,” he said.

  4. steve says:

If! What are you going to do when they don’t?

  5. BrianK says:

My guess is that any voters who would base their decision on something like “opinions on white privilege” have already decided to support Chow.

    • !o! says:

Mebbe, but that’s just a guess. And anyways, his response is as good a barometer as any on how he looks at wealth/power disparity in society, and what he’s absolutely blind to.

  6. Joe says:

Hmmm so if I don’t subscribe to the racist “white privilege meme’ I am a racist? And for all these years I thought not being racist meant not judging by the colour of the skin but the content of the heart.

  7. John Daly says:

I thought the whole exercise (the so-called controversy and consequences) what just another example of how anti-septic partisan politics has become, at least in terms of what a candidate is willing to say. Young Trudeau is another example. What kind of so-called “leader” do folks hope for if a man or woman cannot open their mouths and give voice to their thoughts? Even if what we witness, then, is the process of that person coming to a position. Or leaving one. It’s, to be crude, become total bullshit.

When Tory says he’s not sure white privilege exists, my mouth does not drop open as if a member of ISIS just knocked on my front door asking for money. I don’t like, based on what I’ve observed, Tory very much. I don’t like most people, based on what I’ve observed, very much. I don’t like, based on what I’ve observed, very much. And so fucking what?! What has that got to to, really, with leadership or someone’s ability to govern? Government is a team deal, no? I don’t want to get farther afield with my Saturday morning ranting. I never thought Warren’s tweet was a big deal. Jesus Christ! Twitter!! There’s your problem. That we think and communicate in this way. Fucking Twitter. Give me a BREAK! I didn’t think Warren’s tweet was a big deal and I thought Chow’s response demonstrated a lack of balls on her part (or vagina, I guess, if we want to be correct here). And clearly others don’t think she’s tough enough either. Warren should run for mayor. He would say SO MANY outrageous things folks would not be able to keep up, one would cancel the other out, it would be fine. He could appoint me Minister of Triple Speak 😉

    Doolittle (and McArthur) strike again.

Why are these “journalists” incapable of getting a single source to go on record? That is tabloid, National Enquirer-style reporting, which is–to the best of my understanding–NOT journalism. Doolittle has failed time and time again, using water cooler gossip in place of reliable sources. She asks us to believe her on the basis of what, exactly? The papers throw at least two authors on all of her stories so that they can deflect the obvious criticism she would face if these stories were published as solo articles.

When the Globe and Mail poached Robyn Doolittle it was a true sign of their desperation to stop their ship from sinking. Pity it won’t work.

      • smelter rat says:

Would you go on the record knowing what we all know about the Ford thugs?

        • Just Askin' says:

The guy who tried to sell the crack video (which we still haven’t seen) eventually put himself out there. Had Doolittle been a good journalist, she would have gotten him to give her the video for free, or to go on record.

          • smelter rat says:

Right…eventually. Anyhoo, newspapers have editors and legal advisers etc, so it’s not like reporters just get to print anything they want. Possibly not even at Suns News

      • Ron says:

Er … in order to protect their source, which has been going on since before FDR was in short pants. That’s why.

      • Houland Wolfe says:

And then the Globe lost Julie Traves, editor of the Saturday Focus section, to the National Post, of all places. Now we can have Wente untrammelled.

  9. Ridiculosity says:

I thought you were crazy to issue an apology in the first place. Because none was warranted. (Glad to see you have regained your sanity.)

  10. patrick says:

Done? I think he might have just secured the election because he’s now appealing to the Ford supporters who live in a fantasy world “white persecution”. That and the “anything but a Ford” crowd will be terrified to vote Chow and split the vote.
That aside, our previous and future mayor succeeded because of circumstances, not for ideas, for vision or true appeal to the public for a better future, but out of fear and ignorance and a lust for power.
How will out city evolve with the leaders we are putting in place?

  11. W the K - No, not Warren says:

Has any candidate received the coverage they deserve in this election?

  12. Michael says:

Anybody who thinks he’d be “done” because of this lives in a bubble.
