Part of the problem of understanding the issue from a Canadian perspective is the lack of knowledge on our part of the existing laws. In that hardware store in Alaska a purchaser has to fill out a federal form which the store then uses to run a federal background check through the “National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS)”. At gun shows, on average, 90-95% of the sellers are licensed dealers which also means NICS background checks are done. That leaves private sales. What is the obstacle there? Well the Bloombergs and Paul Allens of the US share the blame. Instead of pushing bills that add background checks to private sales they push bills that add them to absolutely everything. So in Washington State for example, you now have a law where a father cannot lend a rifle to a son or daughter while hunting together (without a NICS check), let alone pass on a rifle or shotgun from parent to child. So we end up with a stalemate between the “more gun control” crowd and the “leave me alone” crowd. Also, many if not most of these mass shooting killers passed background checks anyway, and still others (Boston) use other means.

I would care less if it weren’t for what Trudeau said on the campaign trail. His actions aren’t “real change”, they are same old same old. And this is strictly about image not the money itself.

    – ISIS
“the enemy”, I like it! I’d have inserted an expletive too but I’m not on radio.

    Thank you!

    Trudeau:

This was, to use a soccer phrase, an “own goal” meaning he put the ball in his own net.

It has now been reported that the two ladies have been with the Trudeaus for several years and while making $167,000 as an MP, Justin and his wife paid their salaries out of their own funds. So why then as PM making $334,000 and spending two years criticising Harper’s UCCB and other child care tax relief measures saying rich families like theirs don’t need taxpayer help to raise their children does he take taxpayer money?

Another thing I’ve noticed as the story has continued, is many Trudeau supporters in the media like CP’s Jennifer Ditchburn are claiming the Trudeaus are being “attacked” as bad parents for having nannies. Absolute bullshit. This is solely about Trudeau’s hypocrisy

    • MississaugaPeter says:

This will all be mute when in Trudeau’s first budget, rich and poor, every family (two income and one income and maybe, I am not privy to the info, no income) get a nanny or two of their own on the public dime.

  3. BillBC says:

I thought his handlers/advisors were brilliant during the campaign. He hardly put a foot wrong. It was amazing. Now, though, this nanny business makes him look either greedy or hypocritical or both. Of course it’s “small potatoes,” but this is the kind of thing that people remember.

I don’t think these women are “baby-sitters” either. A baby-sitter is some young teenager you hire for $5 an hour or whatever the going rate is. These are nannies, a very different thing.

I’d like to know what Warren thinks of this issue. Especially the tone-deaf nature of it…

  4. BillBC says:

I listened. Fair comment from you. I wonder why it didn’t occur to him in the first place that this wouldn’t look good.

    • Al in Cranbrook says:

There’s always the possibility that he doesn’t give a s**t what it looks like, either. ( reference source: I’m entitled to my entitlements… ) You know, now that he’s Prime Minister and all.

    • I wonder too! Just kidding, I know why. We all know why. But we all pretend we don’t because it would be a crime of Lèse-Majesté…

  5. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Warren,

This nanny thing was manageable if skillfully approached. But that opportunity has been lost — and worse yet, the government had no clue how to prevent Nannygate from growing giraffe legs. We’re out of control and off-message. Certainly not good.

    • reader says:

What does it mean? Harper was against it too and said he’d never appoint Senators, but he did, including for Saskatchewan. Don’t recall Wall saying much about Saskatchewan’s Senators. Will Wall speak out against existing Saskatchewan Senators now?
