Highly-Scientific Poll™: which political party is Warren joining?

Like most Canadians, I see good in all of the Canadian political parties. I think they all occasionally have good ideas, and they all have some great people.

But they are all sort of the same, aren’t they? They often become indistinguishable when they win the privilege of power. In government, they really aren’t all that different.

Bob Rae’s New Democrats (appropriately) imposed austerity measures when they ran things in Ontario, and Stephen Harper’s Conservatives (appropriately) spent like drunken sailors in the aftermath of the 2008-2009 global recession. And Justin Trudeau’s Liberals (belatedly, but correctly) decided they’d been wrong about ISIS, and have committed Canada to something Harper never, ever did – troops on the ground, in harm’s way.

In my reclining years, I seek clarity, however. I seek a real contrast. So, I’ve made a big decision. I’ve chosen a new political party. Next week, I formally announce it. But can you guess which one? Vote now, vote often!

Not included in the poll: The Greens, because they are about to become leaderless and someone needs to strike back against their BDS-supporting bullshit.

  2. Vancouverois says:

I was going to say the Liberals, because you WOULD kill me if Crétien told you to – but then I realize it was a trick answer, because you’re already a member.

    So I’m saying Democrats.

My father once said that the most influence you can have as a voter is to vote in a leadership race. That makes a lot of sense. There are far fewer voters then in a general election and leaders have much greater influence on policy then an individual MP and it is single transferable vote, so you get to go into much more detail about your preferences.

With 3 or maybe 4 of the parties represented in the House having leadership races, now is the time to be influential. (Remember it is against NDP rules to be a member of another party at the same time.)

I am confused. You say it is a new one for you, and yet two of these options you have been pretty closely tied to.

When it still seemed somehow possible for Trump to win, I was a little panicked, and thought to pick up the phone and head down south to try make a difference. Now it is even more appealing, to drive nails into coffins all day every day, lol. I am betting from a purely ‘lets have fun with something deadly serious’ perspective, you are heading South of the border to clobber some Republicans? About a million Senate and Congressional races still up in the air. From a purely, ‘where’s my paycheque coming from’ standpoint, there are a whole lot of big spending Conservative Leadership hopefuls looking for people, so the market is strong for seasoned consultants in CPC land up here in Canada. For the NDP, why not? Lots of good people there, and they will have a long Leadership as well. Actually, with the two Canadian Party’s semi-leaderless at the moment, your entry into either party would be via a Leadership contestant. Unless you wanted to spin your wheels for a couple years with the moribund head offices. I guess we shall know next week then. Good luck, hope it’s fun.

Since I think it would be illegal for a non-U.S. citizen to join the Democratic Party, I will say you are buying a Conservative membership so you and the better half can run Michelle Rempel’s campaign.

  7. James Bow says:

I was sure you were going to form the new Warren Party, with Elizabeth Warren and Warren Buffet as prominent members.

Hey, I’d vote for it. Solid economic platform and good progressive heart!

  8. Carey Miller says:

Would be nice to see you move to the Conservatives. There is a real opportunity to bring back the progressive part of the party.

Good to see you acknowledge that, in government, there is little real difference between the Libs and the Cons.

  9. Jim Miller says:

Please tell me you are not throwing your hat in the ring for Conservative leadership race too!?!

It seems like everyone is doing it.

Stay tuned for the announcement that my dog will be running.

    Warren,

The Democrats. Easy! Not so much for Hillary’s sake but because you’ve somehow managed to convince the Big Brain in the family that Texas can be turned, as soon as you both hit Dallas.

  14. ottlib says:

    The Rhino Party.
