She always sounded better in the original German, anyway

Good on Doug Ford.

Because, you know what should make you want to “vomit?” It’s crypto-fascists like Tanya Granic Allen, who hate other people simply because that’s the way God made them. That is what should make you want to throw up.

Wynne’s war room believed that this lunatic’s homophobia would cause major damage to Doug Ford. By moving so quickly, and decisively, Ford has instead ended up looking like a true progressive conservative.

Like I’ve been saying to people for a long time: Doug Ford is going to surprise you.

Yes, good on him for moving quickly, but one must ask (and it’s a question for all parties as they all seem to have issues with candidates) why wasn’t this found in the vetting process?

The Liberals found it. Why didn’t the OPC?

    • Miles Lunn says:

I think they knew she was trouble all along, the problem was as one of the four candidates for leadership, they needed an actual excuse to get rid of her as anytime you dump someone who ran for leadership there is a risk of dividing the party. Had she not run for leadership, I think she would have been rejected as candidate to begin with.

And what about the Rebel-connected yahoo Ford *just* anointed to run in London?

  3. Robert White says:

Doug is a unifier I agree, Warren, and he has heart too, but his hand was forced by the Liberals with the targeting of Granic-Allen when they posted the 2014 video that undermined
PC Party credibility by being fringe lunatic right wing ethnocentrism.

Doug had to get rid of her or he would be spending too much time on negative publicity given her liability due to the tape.

I have to agree with you that Doug has more political heart than the Liberal Party gives him credit for. Unfortunately,
the party is bigger than Doug Ford, and the membership is not as politically centrist as Doug is.

    • Matt says:

I would think the Liberals expected to get a lot more than a few hours out of this.

Their planning had to be Ford wouldn’t dump her because he owed her for helping him become leader.

And if that was their hope and thinking, they lost.

      • Robert White says:

If you think of it like a chess game Granic Allen is merely a pawn to be taken off the board so that Doug is exposed, and politically wounded off-the-line in the electoral race.

If this was a Top Fuel drag race in politics we can say that Kathleen Wynne races like Shirley Muldowney off-the-line.
And Doug Ford lost this first round on the circuit.

The Ontario Liberal Party should never be underestimated tactically. They know how to sew up the 416 & 905 whereas Doug will not get both 416 & 905.

I have bet long Liberal Party of Ontario because the PC Party is way too fringe on support & membership. Wynne’s Liberals are adept at governing the center whereas Ford has fringe cohorts and less centrist supporters. Wynne is not embellishing when she states that Ford will restructure & consolidate finance in Ontario.

        • Miles Lunn says:

I think the Liberals are toast with the desire for change being so strong and Wynne’s atrocious approval ratings. Doug Ford could lose, I agree, but it will be to the NDP not Liberals if he loses.

    • terence quinn says:

I think getting rid of here will open up new wounds in the PC party. She will try and get her supporters to not vote for
Ford and may possibly even run as an independent thus giving her air time for her followers. She is a determined, but obnoxious, woman and won’t lie down now that she has some name recognition

    • Pedant says:

Ontario hasn’t had a centrist government since the Davis years, and possibly Peterson.

I hope Ford doesn’t go Red-Tory on us but I do think his government will be the most centrist we’ve seen in 30+ years.

Tanya Granic Allen publicly self-identifies as “Catholic Croat” i.e. not German and certainly not “crypto”. Granted, the Ustaše – whose flag made a reappearance during the Yugoslav Wars – shocked even the SS with their genocidal brutality directed against Jews and Slavs. Interestingly, the 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS “Handschar” (1st Croatian) was the first non-German Waffen-SS division and composed of Bosnian Muslims (ethnic Bosniaks) with some Catholic Croat soldiers and mostly German and Yugoslav Volksdeutsche (ethnic German) officers and non-commissioned officers. They took an oath of allegiance to both Adolf Hitler and the Croatian leader Ante Pavelić. Dare one say, this only further convinces the Russians that Canada is awash in fanatical anti-Slav elements.

    • Roman O. says:

Croats are a Slavic people so I doubt that they hate themselves. The Serbian and Croatian languages are very similar.

      • Pedant says:

Serbian and Croatian are essentially the same language except the former is written in cyrillic script and the latter in latin script.

    • Miles Lunn says:

Croatia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is only a 2 hour drive from the Austrian border so language wise a surprisingly high number of people in Croatia are able to speak German. It is the third known language there after Croatian off course first and then English second (seems to be the most common second language everywhere for obvious reasons), and then German third.

She is also half Maltese too Interesting on gay rights, Malta just legalized it and the centre-right Nationalist Party who is in opposition, their leader told their party to back in arguing opposing it could bite them in the future. Croatia did vote 2/3 against gay marriage although in Europe on gay rights, I’ve found the Iron Curtain divide still very much exists in public opinion on gay marriage with most West of it for gay marriage and most east of it against it.

      • Pat T. says:

One shouldn’t care if Croats are Slavic, Germanic or Multiethnic – some reputable scholars think their ethnogenesis is actually Sarmatian. The point is: a person that came close to kingmaker to potentially the Premier of the most populous province in Canada is trading on the rhetoric of the Ustaša. The dark truth no one wants to talk about is unalloyed multiculturalism has often allowed the most vicious forms of ethnic nationalism, bigotry and racism to fester. Tanya Granic Allen says “it’s beautiful to be part of an ethnic community” – the common and cult-like devotion to ethnicity that trumps individual freedom. This harms Canada. It harms the psyches of millions who in their heart-of-hearts would rather just be themselves sans shrines to ancient ethnic hatreds. It makes already near-impossible international relations more difficult e.g. Trudeau’s India trip disaster. We may never return to a time when hyphenated Canadians are not the norm – mind, we may go the way of Yugoslavia because of this indulgence.

  5. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Warren,

What RW said. They probably don’t really want a leader with centrist tinges and that could mean big trouble ahead. If it becomes a question of right-wing principles over the pragmatist approach to gaining power, that could upset the Ford apple cart right smack in the middle of the campaign. That danger is real and growing now that Tania has been shown the door. The true-believer Harris types won’t take that one lying down. You can take it to the bank.

    • Miles Lunn says:

I think the hardcore social conservatives are much smaller in numbers than many think. Sure they will scream and make noises about it but I think Ford not dumping her sooner is probably more damaging than dumping her at the moment. The smartest move would have been to dump her all along and not court her, mind you he wouldn’t be leader otherwise. Also the party should have not greenlighted her nomination to begin with at both the riding level and for leadership. I think what has happened to the GOP south of the border should be a warning to all conservative parties in Canada to keep those types out since once they get their tentacles in, they are tough to get rid of. And unlike the US, you cannot win on such views.

  6. doconnor says:

He is becoming like Patrick Brown, willing to say anything to win. In a few weeks he’ll be proposing a carbon tax to balance his platform.

    • Robert White says:

Jason Kenny just announced that he would impose a carbon tax on large businesses in Alberta so that the United Conservative Party could take swing voters. The fact is that Kenny knows he has no chance whatsoever if he does not buy in to carbon based taxation. Ford has erred in not coming to the same conclusion.

Carbon based taxation is priced in top-down. Get with the programme, eh.

      RW

  7. Jeff says:

Acting quickly and decisively would have been disassociating during leadership when she routinely spewed this nonsense. Not courting her and her supporters then dumping her when she’s no longer useful. Doug deserves no credit. Parm Gill is next.

  8. Miles Lunn says:

Ford just appointed the replacement which is Natalia Kusendova. As a nurse she seems to have a lot more experience and be far qualified than Tanya Granic Allen. Why the party didn’t choose her in the riding nomination to begin with is beyond me.

    • Matt says:

Granic Allen won the nomination in an open contest.

Fun fact – Was told this morning the party expected her to lose the nomination race.

As for Natalia Kusendova, is she one of the 1600+ nurses the Wynne Liberals have cut since 2015?

    • Adam says:

Like Matt noted, she won an actual contest and was not appointed the candidate.

Ms. Granic Allen traffics in fear, anger and hatred, and those are very motivating sentiments for extreme voters, especially the religious right-wing.

This is how right-wing populists have been winning power, including Donald Trump: whip up voters into a frothing frenzy and then exploit that rage to win. And we all have yet to find a real answer to that.

      • Bruce M says:

That’s what the Left has been doing in Ontario and at the federal level for years.

        Soldiers…In the streets.
He’ll cancel LRT. Only my promises are to be believed.
        He’ll shutter schools and hospitals.
        He’s Harris. He’s Harper. He’s TRUMP!
It’s stunning how people claim hate and anger on one side and neglect the whole-hearted participation of the other.

        • Adam says:

You’re assuming that the Liberals are leftists. They’re not, and they’re proud of that fact. They put on a progressive façade and then scaremonger as much as they need to in order to get actual leftists behind them via “strategic” voting. And then they govern from the centre-right anyways.

Actual left-populists look more like Bernie Sanders, although he’s a mild one. For someone more militant, look at Jeremy Corbyn. Both of them channel people’s distaste for the status-quo into productive solutions, rather than the far-right’s/Trump’s “wreck it all” approach.
