The windows on the accused bomber’s van

I’ll bet he’s a Democrat!

Not that it really matters, but a couple people in Canadian security and intelligence circles I know have had discussions with their American counterparts and they’ve been told the devices sent are “inactive”.

They aren’t calling them “fake” because the components of the pipe bombs like the gun powder, ball bearings and other bits for shrapnel are quite real but as a whole the devices, either by design or by accident weren’t able to detonate.

They didn’t want to release that information until the person sending them was caught because if they indeed intended for them to detonate, authorities didn’t want them to realize they had made a mistake in assembly they may have been able to fix and start sending out more active devices.

But yeah, suspect seems like he hasn’t been playing with a full deck for at least a couple decades. Trump didn’t create him, but he was most likely emboldened by Trump.

That link basically says what I did.

All the components in the device were real.

“roughly six inches of PVC pipe, a small clock, a battery, some wiring and what is known as energetic material, which is essentially potential explosives and material that give off heat and energy through a reaction to heat, shock or friction,”

The additional thing I was told was the devices weren’t able to detonate on their own.

A PVC pipe filled with gun powder could still detonate if exposed to an external heat source for example.

I’m not suggesting there wasn’t still the potential for serious injury or death from them.

I don’t think PVC pipe is strong enough to allow the necessary energy buildup with gunpowder (or “pyrotechnics powder”, as has been reported (disassembled fireworks, IOW)). Steel or iron would be better.

        • Art says:

Why use gunpowder if there’s no intention to have an explosion?

There are a couple of kooks in my neighborhood – their stickers are more of a collage covering the whole frame of the late model vehicle, applied over many years. These fresh, formatted stickers are an interesting design variation from the norm.

Wouldn’t it be nice if big names from both sides down there made common cause in trying to temper violence-inciting rhetoric? No chance of that. The round-the-clock outrage machines certainly aren’t going to slow down for suckers worried about things like civility, etc. and they’re programmed to spit out “Yeah, but whatabout…” automatically.

The Dems should be very careful with this one. What’s good for MSM profits is not always good for their electoral fortunes. Persuading Trump-haters that that they hate him even more than they thought doesn’t give them extra votes.

    • Art says:

Lipstick, pig etc. Both siderism is a crock. 98% of this crap is incited by Trump.

      • Peter says:

Only 98%? Not all of it? Ah well, as you are clearly reporting the results of an objective, empirical, peer-reviewed analysis, who am I to gainsay science?

  4. Ronald O'Dowd says:

It’s all about giving a cross-country permission slip.

And guess who with his big unthinking mouth has been doing precisely that for the last two years…

And guess who is so unbelievably stupid as to solution this by hanging ’em high, after the fact, rather than simply shutting up in the first place. It’s already a profoundly sick society and this genius is egging it along every time he opens his big trap.

  5. Peter says:

It’s already a profoundly sick society

To paraphrase Churchill, it’s the sickest society on the planet, except for all the others. Don’t believe me?

    • doconnor says:

In both your examples people are given a choice between Mexico and the US or China and the US.

There may be sicker societies then the US on the planet, but they are all poorer and most of them are dictatorships.

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Peter,

What would Churchill say about a society that is collectively so toxic that it’s likely drifting toward Civil War, Round Two?

      • Peter says:

I don’t know. He did once quip that the Americans always end up doing the right thing…after they’ve tried everything else. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a serious mess down there and I’m grateful to be Canadian these days. But I do wonder how much of the distemper is real and how much is the world of the internet and cable news. For all his myriad flaws, I don’t see any evidence Trump is a threat to the constitutional order and basic freedoms or wants to be. Their (and our) American-centric fixations are keeping us from seeing the picture is much darker elsewhere. But boy, do they need a new crop of leaders down there!

Two other quotes I try to keep in mind: The first is from Christopher Hitchens, who once said an outsider listening to American political rhetoric could be forgiven for thinking they are just two speeches away from another civil war. The second is from our own homegrown anti-American philosopher, the late George Grant, who once noted that the left is forever raising the spectre of fascism in America, but when the real thing comes, it always seems to descend on Europe.

        • doconnor says:

Trump claims millions of people voted fraudulently in the 2016 election and that is an election he won. Do you think he will just go quietly when he loses an election?

          • Peter says:

Trump doesn’t do anything quietly, but of course he would go. How could he not? Remember, real fascists have mass parties to protect them. Trump has his kids and their spouses. Those who think otherwise have either bought into the perennial leftist koolaid or read too many airport thrillers.

Besides, the Dems are still claiming two years later he only won with Russian assistance even though to my knowledge they haven’t produced one voter to say he or she voted because of those Russian sites.

          • doconnor says:

Even if you only include the Tea Party faction of the Republicans, that still qualifies as a mass party, heavily armed, fiercely loyal.

          • doconnor,

Trump may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but he knows that no member of Congress, House or Senate, would back him up if he claimed an election result was fraudulent, after being defeated in the Electoral College.

Some believe he will be re-elected. My money is on Joe Biden.
