If you watch anything today, watch this

The Premier of Manitoba. And this is so, so powerful. Amazing.

Pallister fucked things up majorly. But at least he’s concerned about looking courageous years from now.

    • Steve Teller says:

Do you live in Manitoba? How are you evaluating that he f’d things up? What baseline of optimal performance are you measuring against?

  2. the real Sean says:

Was also really impressed with him talking about how government spending and low interest rates hurt local farmers. Usually pretty dry stuff but you could tell he was really feeling it. Just as he is really feeling it with Covid. Its not just numbers with this guy. I can’t figure out why the national party hasn’t picked him up yet. I don’t follow Man. politics, so maybe there is a reason I’m not aware of.

    • Dave says:

Rich guy who spends months out of the year vacationing at his home in Costa Rica.. Bit of a tough sell to us rabble.

Certainly what he’s doing now is what needs to be done.

      • Doug says:

The “rabble” seems to have no problem voting for a trust fund backed frat boy posing as a wokebot, who vacations with rich celebrities. Pallister earned his fortune, and more important is a genuine person as opposed to a Telford/Butts contrived persona.

        • Steve Teller says:

Perfect reply – thanks. I always find it odd how people are very selective which “privileged” people they like and which ones they don’t. As you say, I guess it’s OK when you are born with a silver spoon in your mouth like Trudeau, but not OK when you earn the money yourself.

We often lament about why there aren’t more successful self-made people running for office (rather than career bureaucrats). Treatment like Pallister has received is a good reason.

        • Dave says:

Ok, so what’s your response for the original question of why the national party hasn’t picked him up?

        • It not about if he can afford his vacation. It’s they he is spending so much time away from what is supposed to be a very serious job.

If I was a shareholder in a company where the CEO did this I would be also conserned.

It’s nice he’s getting tough with lawbreakers, but he still shit the bed on this. Instead of getting ready for the second wave everyone knew was coming, he spent the period between waves “re-opening the economy “ and bringing in austerity. Kinda hard to have an economy running on four cylinders when people are getting sick.

(I am usually in favour of austerity, but not when there is a pandemic throwing people out of work. )

    • Pedant says:

Oh goodness. How terrible of him to do something in the interests of taxpayers versus the interests of non-taxpayers!

People were thrown out of work due to idiotic and incoherent government policy, not due to the pandemic.

    • The Doctor says:

To be fair, virtually every jurisdiction in Canada did the same thing. Certainly every one of our major provinces. We all got a false sense of security after the first wave of lockdowns, and we all went out and started socializing again, thinking we had sort of beat this thing.

  4. Steve Teller says:

This was an excellent, honest speech. And he is bang-on correct. People here in Manitoba have been hugely irresponsible, and we are (collectively) reaping what we sowed.
The province warned repeatedly that we need to watch our interactions, or else there might need to be lockdowns. This went on for weeks and weeks in the fall. Yet people still gathered, attended out-of-town events, etc.. And then were shocked when the province did exactly what it warned it would do.

  5. Gloriousus et Liber says:

This is the reason why the Premier is the lower polled premier in the country.

And I voted for him. Definitely have buyers’ remorse now.
