Good riddance

Gov.-Gen. Julie Payette and her secretary, Assunta di Lorenzo, are resigning after an outside workplace review of Rideau Hall found that the pair presided over a toxic work environment.

Just curious who the stupid incompetent was who chose her in the first place based solely on her fitting his mould?

Probably the famous gate keeping guardians of democracy AKA the Liberal Party Green Light Committee. Next they’ll green light Lauren Boebert as Minister of Defense.

If only this could be the opening for the larger conversation about the meaningless, expensive, and antiquated connection to the British monarchy.

Other than perhaps David Johnston, most of our recent GGs have been media personalities or career politicians. Julie Payette was a notable exception, but obviously that didn’t work out too well either.

Scrap the whole thing. We have better more pressing expenses than supporting this outdated position.

    • Peter says:

As a confirmed monarchist, I disagree, but I think I know what you are saying about the quality of our GGs, and I don’t disagree about that. However, I thought Mme Jean was a terrific GG who brought elegance, class and a popular touch to the position.

      • Mark D says:

Madame Jean also pleasantly surprised me as a Governor General. I had reservations about her appointment initially because of her past support for Quebec seperatism. However, she quickly and amply proved me wrong, for reasons you state so aptly.

    Another classic Justin home run.

How was she hired in the first place? Allegedly, she had been severanced from a science centre in Quebec operated by the Feds:

That had to be known before she was in effect re-hired by the same employer.

From the Trudeau brand managers’ perspective, she did check off many of the right boxes, so her actual fit with the workplace could have been secondary:
    -woman
    -from Quebec
    -celebrity
-from a science background so presumably “believes in science” and signals a commitment to climate change action

Trudeau was likely pushing for Batman, the most celebrated of scientists.

Wouldn’t this further reduce the chances of a Spring election call as a new GG would need to be in place, presumably for more than a few weeks?

  5. Martin says:

She never should have got hired in the first place and should have been gone long ago but this, from her statement, is pure gold:

“We all experience things differently, but we should always strive to do better”

    Trudeau from 2018.

“’People experience things differently,’ Trudeau says of groping allegations”

Poor Ms Payette. She relied upon Justin Trudeau as a role model (e.g. treatment of JWR, Philpott, Caeser-Chavannes, etc) and looked what happened; dumped by Justin.

Perhaps she should have quoted Justin, “I have reviewed the report and it should serve as a lesson for us all.”

But on the bright side, I’m sure Ms Payette will enjoy not having to deal with Justin anymore. Plus, don’t ex GGs get nice allowance and benefits?

  7. Gilbert says:

This is great news. I nominate Julie Payette for worst governor-general.

  8. Ronald O'Dowd says:

Too bad her Prime Minister is still looking in dictionaries desperately trying to find the meaning of personal accountability.

While he dithers and makes excuses, she actually took it. Pleasant change.

Just as Trump embodied everything the upper half of the social and cultural ladder disdain and fear about those below them, so she became the perfect symbol of everything the lower half despises about those who govern them. A Marie Antoinette for the 21st century. Their positions may be unrelated, but they both serve as pretty good archetypes for the distemper of our times.

    • The Doctor says:

A Manhattan trust fund baby who inherited half a billion dollars from his daddy (in decades-old US dollars, to boot) “embodied everything the upper half of the social and cultural ladder disdain and fear about those below them”? How the hell does that work?

  10. Pedant says:

Should have been fired when she insulted every Canadian who isn’t an atheist. Poking fun at religious beliefs might be tolerated in Liberal war rooms but it shouldn’t be acceptable behaviour from a Governor-General.

I’m still waiting for a single member of the allegedly impartial Ottawa press corps to ask Madame Payette if her mocking of religions extends to First Nations spiritual beliefs.

  11. Ronald O'Dowd says:

It was said that she hated the job. Also that she didn’t live at day at Rideau Hall. If true, no wonder all of this came to pass.

    • Derek Pearce says:

I genuinely ask then, What the hell was she thinking when she agreed to the job? How could she not know she’d hate it? Honestly I’m baffled for real.

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

        Derek,

Delusion is a powerful force: just imagine this Prime Minister actually thinking that he could do a credible job as PM. I rest my case. He got the job based solely on a name and that was it.
