Canada, Trudeau’s plaything

My Tru-Anon friend says that when Justin played for the Leafs in 1993, he neutralized Gretzky, defeated the Kings single handed, then steamrolled the Montreal Canadians in the final round, delivering Toronto’s 14th Stanley Cup.

  2. Joseph says:

    Miss Harper yet?

  3. Ronald O'Dowd says:

Legault is autonomist-nationalist in name only. Nothing new there. Leopards rarely change their spots and he sure hasn’t, so this is all about creating a semi-legitimate pretext for him to become the first Quebec president. I don’t trust Legault any further than I can shit and went out of my way not to vote either CAQ or PLQ-QLP last time. Voted NDP, while some anglophones I know were foolishly voting CAQ.

    • And for those of you who may be wondering why I didn’t vote Quebec CP, those are the same leftovers and cast outs that dominate the PPC. Need I say more?

    • Walter says:

If you are a Quebec separatist, you strike while the iron is hot, or strike while the PM is incompetent as the case may be.
The poor Separatists lost a lot of ground under Harper – so they have to work at double speed to restore their movement.

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

        Walter,

When pretty much everyone was predicting the Bloc’s demise, I was predicting in writing a BQ renaissance. Don’t forget that the Bloc is now the second leading federal-level party in Quebec. That’s a good comeback, with more to come when an incredibly naive Legault finally realizes that the IncompetentEmperorTM has no clothes. THAT’s when he goes back to being a dyed-in-the-wool sovereignist, much to his personal satisfaction.

  4. Yet Another Calgarian says:

Just when you think he can’t possibly get any dumber our PM exceeds expectations yet again.

If the separatists demand more you can bloody well expect Alberta to start doing the same. Especially if Trudeau is the one opening the door to it.

  5. Cranston Snord says:

This move, if successful, will be the Meech Lake Accord on steroids. Daddy Pierre must be rolling over in his grave. Oh, Justin, you’re such an idiot.

    • Walter says:

Pierre’s goal was to strengthen Quebec within Canada as much as possible.
I think Justin is upholding that vision to a T.

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

        Walter,

Pierre Trudeau was stuck in a 60s mindset when the minority considered themselves largely as Quebecers-French-Canadians. That’s long dead. No one in Quebec considers themselves even remotely as FCs today.

Add to the mix the hypocritical attitude of English Canada who certainly DON’T want to see Quebec gaining powers and clout in this federation. English Canada, by and large, wants to weaken Quebec in Canada. But they’re too phoney to actually admit it.

  6. Gilbert says:

I think Pierre Trudeau would be horrified that his son is so easy to please the separatists and has no principles. Pierre Trudeau was too left-wing for me, but he was intelligent and had principles.

  7. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Scot,

    Angus Reid: Liberals +2.

    Interesting.

    • Douglas W says:

Big lead for the Libs in vote-rich areas.

Conservatives need an effective strategy to win the swing ridings.

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

        Douglas,

In a nutshell, Harper doomed Harper and Trudeau by his instinctive and natural absolute incompetence will doom Trudeau. They took a leap of faith with Justin. Now, they need to give Erin his turn. Hope it turns out better under O’Toole. Erin ain’t perfect but at least he isn’t a B-class actor masquerading as an empty suit. No one needed to show Canadians who Justin is…this Prime Minister did that in spades all by himself.

        • Douglas W says:

Voter looked at Scheer and said, no thanks.
          Same conclusion for O’Toole.

Each time, Trudeau wins by default.

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

            Douglas,

If you’re going to write off Erin, at least wait and see how he does in the campaign. As our host says: Campaigns matter.

          • irreversible road map to freedom says:

Remember all those times that an Opposition leader turned PM / Premier was ahead in the polls *before* the election that made them PM / Premier? No. You don’t.

  8. Robert White says:

Conrad Black wins it with his article in the National Post today. He says we are looking at yet another Notwithstanding Clause episode via Constitutional wrangling.

I decided against becoming a lawyer because of the Notwithstanding Clause back when I finished first year Canadian Legal Studies at Carleton.

I knew this clause would keep cropping up intuitively back when I decided I wanted no part of the discipline if this sort of card was going to played every few years.

Still to this day I think the Notwithstanding Clause is problematic.

Black insinuates that we are once again being blackmailed just as Warren does too. I had to read Black’s article twice.

      Robert,

I was at Carleton BA law too. Then went on to Laval.

      • Robert White says:

Professor Barry Wright was my first year prof. Nice guy, but every time I asked a question he said…’that’s next term’. By the second term I stopped asking questions.

Carleton was not my cup of tea for law. I should have gone elsewhere too.

        • Ronald O'Dowd says:

          Robert,

Let’s just say that when the profession enthusiastically embraces the prospect of winning at any and all costs, and by any method, that says all y0u need to know about legal ethics in so many quarters. I’m exceedingly grateful at my minimum exposure to members of the profession. I’ll leave it at that. Now, as to members entering the pearly gates, well…

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

In our neck of the woods, the problem was so bad what with lawyers using more or less legitimate procedural tactics to derail otherwise valid and sound cases that the Quebec government had to insert a specific article in our Civil Code to eliminate that “nicety” of the profession.

          • Robert White says:

So I guess the law profession is an acquired taste thingy where one just imbibes once in a while then, eh?

If I were to ever become a lawyer I would specialize as far away as I could get from Constitutional Law due to the Notwithstanding Clause, but even the lawyers that practice outside of Constitutional law end up looking at constitutional law arguments day-to-day at work.

Constitutional Law seems like herding cats to me, frankly. It’s not like it’s cut & dried stuff. I guess the Supreme Court judges like it though I don’t.

Canada’s Charter of Rights & Freedoms should be an iron clad solid document IMHO. It should be impervious to Quebec treachery. I blame the legislators.

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

            Robert,

When Trudeau announced a constitutional deal with Lévesque, that phoney deal broke the 7 others from the Gang of Eight. The accord, quite deliberately from a federal perspective fell apart the next day and Lévesque realized he had been hoodwinked. His spy in Trudeau’s PMO wasn’t up to the task. Poor her. In any event, the now Gang of Seven signed on to a limited charter and a notwithstanding clause. Otherwise, no deal. So Trudeau caved on the three-quarters of a loaf principle rather than nothing.

  9. Gilbert says:

I think Pierre Trudeau was right when he told his son not to enter politics. The father knew his son wasn’t qualified. Hopefully, most voters will agree.

    • Peter Williams says:

In politics Justin uses the Bernie Madoff approach; pay off people today hoping that future ‘earnings’ will allow you to continue indefinitely.

Massive federal spending with no sign of balancing the budget or paying off debt.

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

        Peter,

Sure but Trudeau is only following The Bank of Canada and most especially The Federal Reserve. Disaster awaits and not just in the bond and stock markets. It will make 1929 look like a picnic. Stay tuned. It coming soon.

    https://law.queensu.ca/news/Perspectives-on-Canadas-Charter-Unpacking-the-override-provision

If you Google ‘problems with Notwithstanding Clause’ a treasure trove of complaints pops up. Seems I’m not the only person that wants to scrap the clause entirely.

  11. Ronald O'Dowd says:

I’m certainly no Churchill but like him, I live to scream in the wilderness, while no one listens. Look forward to seeing how my track record pans out.

  12. Douglas W says:

Ronald, to your point about me writing off O’Toole: I often wonder if he’s deliberately keeping his powder dry.

That is, wisely, not showing all of his cards.
And launching Day One of the campaign with shock and awe effect.

I’ll give O’Toole this much: he’s a strategic thinker; a military guy with corporate boardroom experience.

If his War Room is half decent, it won’t be a Liberal romp.

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Douglas,

IMHO, Trudeau will destroy Trudeau just like Harper destroyed Harper. With that being said, Erin knows that he has to make his case and forcefully. O’Toole must prove to a plurality of Canadians that he’s competent, up to the job and centrist. Erin is all of those things. But like I say, only O’Toole can effective make that case and cause a win on election day. His strategists can’t do it and I certainly can’t do it for him. If O’Toole has the intestinal fortitude and gravitas in him, as I think he does, he will be Prime Minister. In short, it’s being an instinctive master of the political reassurance game. And P.S. if it’s not already done, get King Norquay on board and give him a major and CRUCIAL role in the next campaign.

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

My specialty, is of course, doing all I can to get rid of governments that in MY opinion are not good for Canada. So, I’ll rise to the occasion once again. I want to clean Justin’s political clock on election night and I quite literally live and breathe just for that.

If Carney is half the person I think he is, he’ll get our host rapidly on board when he becomes leader. Then WE’LL have to really watch our Ps & Qs otherwise Warren Kinsella will very likely wipe us out in the subsequent election. IMHO, in his heart of hearts, Kinsella will die as a double track Liberal. Would be one hell of a lot better if he came over to our side but that’ll never happen.
