I think the 2nd half is of most interest, regarding Canada’s energy sector. As you point out, WK, Carney is saying all the nice soundbites about getting things moving on pipelines etc. However, the reality is that he knows he can say this with little threat of anything actually happening – due to the ridiculous legal infrastructure that is continually expanded and reinforced by our activist courts.
We have way too many groups who are given effective veto power over major projects, and/or are tolerated when they set up blockades etc.. if they don’t like something. Add to that activist provinces like BC and Quebec, who are happy to take equalization payments while stymying the things which generate revenue for the country. And finally, all of this is magnified by broader land-ownership decisions, like the very frightening one from BC recently.
So, how do we become a prosperous nation? By denying special interest groups this power, and cracking down very hard on any attempts to illegally blockade major projects. It’s time to remind people where their handouts come from – it isn’t out of thin air, and it isn’t from abstract concepts of “tax the rich”, or dangerous “land back” statements.
Great discussion, as always with you three.
