Is it tradition that two portraits of former prime ministers are always painted, with the sitter picking the one that will hang in Parliament? And if so, what happens to the other one — does it go to the ex-PM, to a museum, or failing all else in this instance, it could head to Conservative Party Headquarters! After all, if they follow the master, perhaps, sometime in my lifetime they can manage one majority mandate!
About the yellow – I thought it loud, but Rosemary Barton said that the portrait will be hung in a place that’s rather dark and she said it would be good to have some colour there (not her exact words, but the essence of what she said).
Oil on canvas. Size approximately 140cm x 90cm, I would say. Classic wood/gesso frame with leaf-gilding, as far as I can see.
Thank you for posting a photo and sharing with us:)
Damn, I wish Chretien was hangin’ Harper!
French don’t hang – they use the Guillotine! Once the job is done they chant: Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite.
But Jean Chretien is no Robespierre – Thank God!
I am certain that the portrait was well hung.
Warren,
Can you answer the following:

Curious to know if Mrs. Harper was in attendance. She certainly keeps a low profile. And did they have anything civilized like a reception afterwards?
Yes, Mrs. Harper was there.

The portrait is well done.
Not wild about that yellow background colour.
I find the bright yellow background dazzling and wonderful.
The background yellow is terriffic in a portrait of a man who always brought light
into that dark house on the hill.
We will not see his kind again in that place. If we are lucky we might see someone
who understands and Canada the way M. Chretien does.
understands and loves Canada

Wow, Steve Gallagher, please step away from the bong!
I like painting but not so crazy about the yellow/gold background.
