Nigel Wright

Smart guy. Smart choice.

And, if I might make a personal observation, it sure is a small world.

That mischievous Kady’s already linked a story about how he chaired one of those contemptible Toronto elite galas recently

(for, er, a sick children’s charity. Those damn elites, always acting so superior.)

LOL . He is and it sure is ( a small world) Say Hi to S. for me.

  3. JStanton says:

I suspect he will be gone by Spring, or even as early as Xmas.

Mr. Harper’s preference for surrounding himself with sycophants, mediocrity, and those that present no challenge of superior experience or intellect, has resulted in a string of policy disasters – and a revolving door of functionaries. He is unlikely to change, so this appoinment is merely spin.

After witnessing the first of Mr. Harper’s tantrums, Mr. Wright will begin to glimpse the farcical nature of his new role, and begin to doubt Mr. Harper’s stated motives. After a succession of Mr. Harper’s counter-intuitive and destructive economic/financial edicts, ones that ignore not only Mr. Wright’s sage advice, but the fundamentals of “nation-building-101”, and the consensus of economists, Mr. Wright will begin to plan his exit, until the inevitable announcement that he feels compelled to “spend more time with his family”.

I’ll go ten bucks that he’s gone by Spring. Any takers?

From Toronto. From Bay Street, Toronto. Multi-millionaire. Educated at Harvard. Organizes gala cultural events. Bet he’s even been to the opera or the symphony or a play.

Someone get a mic in front of John Baird quick! He must be having a stroke.

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Ted,

I’m amazed at how he holds it together in QP. He really needs to think of his health before it thinks of him…hypertension is a killer.

    • Cath says:

sounds like you’re speaking about Michael Ignatieff:-)

      • Herta says:

Odd how people seem to forget the scorched earth policy Mr. Baird and his ilk inflicted on Ontario during the Mike Harris years. Poor, low income people bore the brunt of their slash and burn policies. There has never been even the slightest comment that hints at remorse for the deaths in Walkerton, the horrendous death of a pregnant, Kimberly Rogers in a sweltering, tiny Sudbury apartment after having been stripped of even the basics of life, or what about Dudley George? Yet, it seems, the media and the public have forgotten what these swine were responsible for …..and can’t seem to figure out why the Federal Tories can’t leverage a majority.

My hope is for a coalition or another minority.

  5. parnel says:

Probably a smart choice short term. But Iggy made a smarter choice, election wise, in picking Parisot to work in his office

  6. Paul R. Martin says:

The latest Ipsos Reid poll is Conservatives 35, Liberals 29, NDP 12, Green 12, and Bloc 11. A decline in NDP support is consistent with other polls. Does Harper want an election? Probably! Does Layton want an election? No way!

  7. Brian says:

Harper will call an election just to get him and his annoying ‘ideas’ out of the office.

  8. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Warren,

Wright may have the “Right Stuff”. Trouble is, he’s stuck in the wrong party…this isn’t your father’s Progressive Conservatives. (You remember them — the guys who could at least win an occasional majority government…or two.)

  9. JH says:

Warren knows the deal on this guy and he knows this is big trouble for the big red tent and the nippers.

  10. Sugar says:

    Oh Ronnie,

The Liberals haven’t won a majority against a united right in thirty years. Try again.

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Sugar,

With respect, apples and oranges: your point, I believe, concerns an electoral win without majority electoral support from the voters — otherwise known as winning with 50% of the vote. That’s not what I’m talking about. My argument is that the PCP was an occasional majority government former (and winner in terms of seats) which can’t yet be said of the Harper-inspired CPC. Though it cannot be ruled out entirely, I would advise Conservatives not to hold their breath through the next election. Canadians have got this Prime Minister’s “number” and it doesn’t equate to a push-button-spelling of majority on the horn.

Hmm, WK, looks like your firewall and spam filter have let you down and now you’ve got a real roach problem… and a particularly virulent breed, who’ve evidently grown immune to bore-ic acid through self-exposure.

Furigation may be the only answer: gather ’em up & dump ’em off at a Ford rally so they can all absorb fatal levels of trash talkixcity and self-immolate in an orgy of faux-outrage.

Yeah, so the progressives have taken a bit of a hit for standing up and doing the right thing on the gun registry and provoking the fury of the Great Con Machine.

But the tide will soon turn again over the next few weeks when all the crap the Cons tried to slip through this summer when they thought no one was looking catches up with them: the out-of-control G20 spending; the idiotic Census decision which is making us an international embarassment; the rubes getting swindled when they buy their first new car (i.e., the F-35 jets) and then lying about it, as though their older brother had already committed them to the deal when he lived in the city 10 years ago… and that’s just for starters. Like it or not, you clowns have a record of your own to defend now, and it’s pretty damn scratched-up, already, to mix a meta-Ford.

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Namesake,

Lightning II is the right name for it alright — it will strike more than once against this government. A case in point: media reports that Israel has negotiated a better price than Canada for the F-35s — funny that, considering that Israel is not part of the nine country consortium. I’d call that lightning strike one.

Must be the same genius doing the accounting who previously “handled” the Twin Summits! Maybe he or she should be told to go jump in the…fake…lake.

  12. Darrell says:

ABC- ANYTHING BUT COALITION, (IGGSTER/ NDP/ BLOC) THE NEW CPC SLOGAN.

    • Herta says:

Au contraire…let’s have a coalition! They’ve got to be able to do a better job than the current bunch of self-centred, venomous bunch nonsense spewing Conservatives. When the Reformatories decided to act like sensible human beings, I may begin to listen. Until then, I can only hope for either a minority or a coalition government. At this point either option works for me.

  13. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Observant,

“So why does the Liberal party still present Ignatieff as their best offering for PM of Canada ? WHY ??!!!”

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the other guy lost big time and was thoroughly humiliated when he went up against Martin in 2004. It took him two tries to get in. (We plan on doing much better than that — God and the Canadian people willing.)

  14. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Observant,

With this Prime Minister you get a bonus ? moral certainty that THEY will follow HIM (as if they had any other choice?) ?right? (how apropos) to political oblivion!!!

    (Damned accents…)

  15. Cam says:

Under the dictionary definition for ‘servant’, it should say, see ‘Observant’.

  16. DJ says:

Ignatieff is doing just fine. The Liberals are getting their act together and the Conservatives are slowly defeating themselves. You can only push the “Just Visiting” slogan for so long. Ignatieff is in it for the long term, and it’s only a matter of time before he becomes prime minister and Harper quits and goes back to Calgary.
