Snowmaggedon

Whatever you do, wimpy Toronto politicians, don’t do this.  It’s been more than a decade, and Montrealer pals still won’t let me forget the shame.

Hey Warren – reporting from Bruce County that town officials have pulled the snow plows off the road because conditions are nasty. A break in the snow for the moment with squalls to continue through the afternoon. It’s -12c with a -23 windchill currently. I’m glad for the Toronto kids who have a snow day today. Those are usually very fun days and I liked spending them with my kids when they were small. A few years ago we had one whole week off due to winter conditions.

It doesn’t appear to be as bad as the media and experts had suggested. At least not here. I’d be interested about what it’s doing in Oshawa – anyone there?

I’m just east of Oshawa and it’s not doing much of anything – snowing a wee bit at the moment. We’ve had, perhaps, four inches and it was windy but isn’t anymore. Schools are open but buses were canceled. (My kids are home, but both with colds.)

And we keep giving our Montreal friends more reason to make fun of us. Toronto DSB closing schools today? Ridiculous. The hype leading up to what essentially amounts to flurries? Beyond the pale. This is all the fault of 24-hour news.

    Warren,

Makes me wonder which one is going to get snowed on Friday when the perimeter crowd meets at the White House…

It’s pretty nasty here about 40Km west of Brockville. Not a huge amount of snow yet, but it’s very windy and -15Deg.
A great day to hunker down.

In 1999 Lastman called out the army and closed down the City. Regardless I went to work and was glad I did. As soon as I arrived at the office, I received a call about a horrendous fire on Queen Street and I made preparations to receive the survivors. It was a bitterly cold day, I think it was -15. Comparing that day to this one is a joke-at least on my street, we got half or less of the predicted snow fall. Here in Toronto it was more of a media storm than a snow storm I think.

    But what do I know…just saying………………..

    • Warren says:

I remember that day. Knew people who lived there. They lost everything – so I gave them a TV set!

    • JenS says:

“More of a media storm” is right. I’d be more specific and blame TV media. I worked in one newspaper newsroom into which, for a time, a guy who had been a TV news assignment editor was brought. The print people, when we would get six flakes of snow, were astounded by his over-zealous reaction. We referred to snow as his Viagra. He always wanted “total team coverage” of weather events, from light spring rain to tornado touch-downs. It was all the same to him.

Alright, it was embarrassing/lame/what have you– but Montreal would do the exact same thing if they had to deal with (no one seems to remember this) 120cm of snow in just over 10 days.
