Auditor General: Conservatives are liars

I probably could have written a slightly more benign headline, but it’s about right.  To wit:

…in her letter addressed to members of a Commons committee on Friday, which was received by the clerk and members on Monday, Fraser said the quote had nothing to do with the summits.

Instead, she said, the Conservatives recycled an old comment she made on security spending by a previous Liberal government after the 9/11 terrorist attacks a decade ago.

“The comments attributed to me in the [Conservative] report are completely unrelated to G8/G20 spending,” Fraser writes in her letter.

“I would appreciate it if the report could be modified as it is clearly erroneous.”

Boy, it sure is a good thing this isn’t all happening right before the leaders’ debates, or anything!

It wouldn’t surprise me if Harper has one of his toadies researching to see if he can prorogue the debates. Barring that, he must be thinking of calling in sick – which would likely be true. After all, this stuff must make him want to puke. Or crap his pants. Or whine for his mommy.

    W,
The Liberals should have grabbed this tune for their theme song – could there be a better fit?
    D.

    • Dave Wells says:

Jeez hammer, thanks for making me waste 17 minutes of my life listening to old music on youtube….sheesh high school all over again.

  3. OMG!
This is absolutely outrageous!!! I am somewhat cynical, but this is plumbing the depths. Fraser must have been boiling mad if she is going public.

so you’ve been all around one riding in central Alberta? What a portrait of Canada to base your opinions on! Man that’s like someone reading a bunch of papers online and saying they talk to Canadians every day. Funny Tulk you should take that comedy act on the road.

      • Namesake says:

he’s already got his own Tulk Show… he’s All Tulk, All the Time

      • JS Rothwell says:

Evidence of what? That Alberta overwhelmingly votes Tory? Do you really need to drive around to find out something that most adult Canadians who have been ALIVE for the last twenty years could have pointed out. I thought Alberta Votes Overwhelmingly Tory was about as obvious as Ottawa is the capital.

Thanks Gord. I guess someone has to do all the hard work confirming the obvious.

While you’re out there can you make sure the sky is still blue?

    • Robin says:

It was warm here in Ottawa today so I went out for a walk around my neighbourhood. Didn’t see any BQ signs – worst I have ever seen. The BQ is treating Ontario like a political brown field.

      • The Doctor says:

So what’s the analogy — that the Liberals regard Alberta the same way that the BQ regards Ontario? As a place where you don’t need to bother running candidates?

      • Robin says:

My narrow part of the world is no indication of the rest of Canada. That is the point that you both missed.

      • JS Rothwell says:

Funny, cause in BC I see political signs for all parties and candidates too. The west is more than Alberta Tulk.

  5. M says:

Are we still tasering folks for G8/G20 related conduct?

Because misappropriating $50M seems like it’s worth a buzz or two. Especially in light of all the other folks who got billy-clubbed, frog-marched and locked up for no reason at all.

  6. Harvey Martin says:

Allow me to translate: They LIED. They FABRICATED. They sought to MISLEAD Parliament. Again.

    • Ron says:

      yeah
it’s adscam and the gun registry boondoggle and the missing billions from the HRDC
      what ???
      ooops
      wrong political party!
alas a rose by any other name is still

      • smelter rat says:

The last Tory Prime Minister to turn a deficit into a surplus was John A MacDonald. Now that’s something the Reformacon machine doesn’t want you to know.

      • Harvey Martin says:

were you paid to write that, Ron?

      • Jamie Rothwell says:

Jeez Ron, I dont think any word other than suck captures your prose so eloquently. A veritable James Joyce you are.

        • Ron says:

are you defining suck as in Iggy’s approval rating
          because that’s low…his ratings that is 😉

          • Namesake says:

yours are in the negative numbers; so much so, we should call you ‘Nor’… and when we put that together, we’ll just Ig-nor you.

          • JS Rothwell says:

Actually no Ron. I was commenting on your poor prose. Really its more a testament to people not paying attention during school instead of the education system itself. Keep working on that english though, future responses will be in Gaelic.

      • James Bow says:

You know, the Liberals were punished for those things after they happened.

If you agree that the events above are comparable (and you haven’t denied it), then do you agree that the Conservatives deserved to be similarly punished on May 2nd?

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

  7. Marc L says:

I would wait to see the true report rather than some leaked version obtained by the press before jumping to conclusions. From the CBC:

“Auditor General Sheila Fraser is urging Canadians to wait for her office’s final report on G8 and G20 summit costs after a report on a leaked draft put the campaigning Conservatives on the defensive.

Fraser said in a statement on Monday afternoon the final report cannot be released until Parliament returns, despite all four parties calling for the final document to be made public before the first televised leaders’ debate on Tuesday.

“I strongly caution the public to wait until our final report on the G8 Legacy Infrastructure Fund has been tabled in Parliament and made public,” Fraser said. “Sometimes during the process of fact validation, additional information is brought to our attention. Only the final report that is tabled in Parliament represents our audit findings and conclusions.”

    • smelter rat says:

Try to keep up Marc. This thread is aobut a different Reformacon lie.

      • nic coivert says:

They just can’t remember which fire they’re putting out.

        • Marc L says:

Oops, inavertedly posted in wrong thread. Mea Culpa.
Nic Coivert, your comment is what I hate about partisan politics — it’s not because I don’t support everything the Liberals say and do that I’m a Conservative supporter. Actually, the Liberals would have my vote this time around if they were able to generate a Chrétien-Martin style economic platform. Unfortunately, they are trying to sound like the NDP, which really turns me off.

  8. fritz says:

Stock Day just apologized unreservedly to the AG, on P&P for misquoting her in the report. Did they just assume no one would read the minority report. It’s really amateur hour with these guys.

    • JenS says:

Note that while they first sent Baird in, when they knew they were totally cornered they sent in a guy who isn’t running again. After all, he has nothing to lose and no need for accountability.

  9. George says:

I’m sure no one remembers back to 2010. How long has CBC been sitting on this do you suppose? I don’t think Canadians are hanging on all of this at all. Judging by this latest
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/special/federal-election/national/tories-near-majority-territory-with-12-point-lead-in-new-harris-decima-poll-119619479.html whatever new scandal the opposition have for the next week, keep’em coming man because people are turning them OFF.

    • Philip says:

I guess we will all have to wait and see if your CPC does actually get their coveted majority. I think stealing $50,000,000 from Canadian taxpayers does get our attention. Why does Tony Clement need $50,000,000 George? The voters will have the final say George, not you.

    • Namesake says:

the bulk of the actual misappropriation of funds involved in Adscam took place 5 to 10 years before the election the Libs lost power over it on, and that was all triggered by an A-G report, and you clowns have been reminding people of that every chance you get to deflect from whatever you’d been caught doing at the time….

and you’re trying to pretend that people won’t remember what happened just 10 months ago or so, which a new A-G report is highlighting?

By George, You’ll Rot In It

      • George says:

I hope Ignatieff takes you advice and runs with this in tonight’s debate.

        • Namesake says:

that rant is as steeped in hypocrisy as you are: the Libs aren’t ‘waving around a copy’ of the first draft because they don’t have one, they just have a news report about one, and even that reporter didn’t have a copy, she just read one, because it would be ILLEGAL to have a copy herself: it’s a protected document.

Whereas the Sun DOES have a copy of the next draft, which, um, was illegal for the CPC to forward to them, and illegal for them to publish under David Akin’s byline on a number of QMI sites, but which they were only to happy to do, since some of the more inflammatory language had been excised.

          http://www.torontosun.com/news/decision2011/2011/04/11/17953806.html

        • Outsider says:

Yes, that august publication is certainly where Iggy should go for political advice, since it can be counted on for objectivity and balance. And a cure for the common cold. And a garbage-based replacement for fossil fuels.

for a guy who is not actively working for the machine you seem to be working yourself up into quite the lather over a “draft”
and can someone give Mark Holland a happy pill…looks like “Marky Mark Mark and the not so fun bunch”

Transaction Report – the following amount $.50 has been electronically deposited to your online trolling account. You’re payment is currently set in a pay per word format.

      • Ron says:

        so you’re not a Conservative…
because you would know that I would receive this payment in 2015 or is now 2014?

        • JS Rothwell says:

Got me there Ron, Im a Canadian. Id talk to someone though Ron, the Conservatives are breaking labour law by not paying you for five years. Have you sent them any communication asking why you havent been paid.

Thanks for the heads up Ron. Knowing that there is a bad employer out there is the first stage in avoiding them. 🙂

  12. Pcase says:

Love it. You should definitely start counting your chickens George, you are home free! :s

You are are right, Weston formerly from The Sun was a lefty mole that whole time, he was just sitting on this one – right… graping. straws. george.

  13. eattv says:

I noticed that the PBO, normally the Conservatives’ whipping boy, is quoted in the supplementary report to try and put them in good light, just before the AG lie is used. Looks like they were desperate to find something good to say about themselves.

  14. jack says:

They didn’t misquote her, they took a quote from a previous report, praising the Liberals and used it as theirs. That’s not misquoting. Its known as deceit. Can anyone believe they just accidentally took the quote form another report unknowingly?

The contempt shown here is unbeleiveable. Will anyone care? Is it a game changer. It should be. It sure makes you wonder how any conservative would hold their nose and vote for Harper. At some point you have to have some self pride and some integrity. At best stay home, at worst, vote for another party.

I tend to doubt it being a game changer, sadly, but again, it sure makes the departures of Day, Strahl and Prentiss interesting.

Maybe they just couldn’t stand it any longer?

  15. Scott Tribe says:

When the multitudes of Cons supporters are going around on every Progressive /Liberal blog and claiming it’s nothing.. that’s a sure fire sign they’re in panic mode this will resonate with the public – badly -.

    • Apparently Con-Troll_A-Tive supporters are under the misguided impression that writing on personal blogs actually influences anyone to change their mind.

      Ditto for the other side.

      That said, it’s still fun.

BREAKING: BEV ODA TO INSERT ^NOT^ IN FRONT OF MIS-USED AUDITOR GENERAL COMMENT ON REPORT.
