Sun Media, May 30: Hudak’s cock-up, and provincial elections

Jacqi and I recoil in horror as Tim Hudak demonstrates the size of, er, something.

If he is describing the size of something, he must be describing a Liberal.

I understand Tim Horton has returned to lead the PC party. At least Garfield Dunlop thinks so…

      LOL.

Tory MPP refers to ‘Tim Horton government’

Maybe he was tired and needed a coffee after the weekend’s Progressive Conservative convention?

Tory MPP Garfield Dunlop (Simcoe North) stood in the Legislature to proclaim “a Tim Horton PC government will protect our communities by making sex offenders wear GPS bracelets that track their whereabouts.”

Er, would that be a Tim Hudak government?

Belly laughs followed and Energy Minister Brad Duguid later quipped: “Well, it’s like a doughnut — round with a $10 billion hole in it.”

That was a reference to Liberal criticisms that Hudak’s campaign platform released over the weekend for the Oct. 6 election has a $10 billion gap between revenues and expenses, thanks to promised tax cuts.

Adding insult to injury, Liberals have been referring to the Hudak promises as “Timbits” for days, with one noting, “At least Tim Hortons’ menu is fully costed.”

Perhaps it was a good thing Hudak skipped question period. He was in Richmond Hill elaborating on his pledge to allow couples to take advantage of income-sharing for tax purposes.

And maybe a stop at the drive-through for a double double.

Until I listened to your piece I didn’t even know they had elections in Manitoba. So thank you for that. Did you know the word “Manitoba” means “mosquito paradise” in Inuit?

    • AmandaM says:

Between September and November, there are 7 (likely 8) provincial/territorial elections. NF, PEI, ON, MB, SK, YK, NWT and likely BC. Crazypants!

  4. Transplanted Doerite says:

A couple of comments on your comments on other provinces.

While I don’t at all disagree with you on Wall in SK (I’m quite impressed with him), I found your comments on MB less credible.

Indeed, it’s hard to even believe that you are friends with wee Hughie. I guess it’s the law degree thing you have in common huh? Or did you marry into money and have not worked an honest day’s work in your life as well? Just kidding.

Wee Hughie may well win – for the same reason that Hudak may win in ON: the ubiquitous “change for change sake” – but voters in both provinces will surely regret it. But I think you are wrong. The NDP have 36 of 57 seats, a 17 seat majority and the MB Liberal Party was reduced to 1 seat when their only other seat bailed to run federally. That’s a lot of seats in vote-rich Winnipeg to lose for the government to change. Do you have any proof for your statement that the Libs are “coming back” in MB? Because on the face of it, it’s laughable. They were slaughtered in May 2 election – even Anita Neville lost her long-held seat – hardly a good sign.

More importantly, Manitobans aren’t stupid. The notion that large numbers of them would vote Liberal instead of NDP when the economy is humming along, the Jets are returning and the things are generally in good shape, while knowing that doing so will help elect Tories, is ludicrous. In fact, I can’t believe someone of your sophisticated political acumen actually said it. Explain yourself.

    • smelter rat says:

I agree. The Libs don’t really exist as a viable provincial party here. The NDP may lose some seats this fall, but Selinger hasn’t made any serious mistakes during the past 2 years, so I’m betting another smaller majority or at the least a minority. If there’s an announcement tomorrow about an NHL team returning to the ‘Peg, it’s hard to imagine a Conservative gov’t. That said, the NDP are somewhat stale, and could use an infusion of new blood.

Whadya think, bigcityclod – we have a chief, king or dictator ?
With 500 Inuit residents in Manitoba that hardly makes any sense.

Try this for a more likely answer – It comes from either the Ojibwa word “manito-bah” or the Cree “manito-wapow,” meaning “strait of the spirit” in reference to The Narrows of Lake Manitoba.

With Doer ( how ironic for a Dipper ) gone Hugh has a fighting chance but lots of good things happening here it will be a tough election to win. Doerite is correct, Libs are dead here.
