Hudak and McGuinty on crime

Sent via Twitter, of all things.  Anyone spot the political antecedents, here?

Now all we need is Hudak riding in a tank. Absent that, I’m sure sea-dooing up to a press opportunity will suffice.

    I really hate that ad.

There’s a role for prison industry in the correctional system. To break it down to “sex offenders in your neighbourhood” is to torque to the utter breaking point.

The simple truth of the world is that people commit crimes, and the vast majority of them don’t spend the rest of their lives in prison. Nor should they. They should be punished in a way befitting their crime.

Sensible corrections involves a mix of restrictions on behaviour and programs that allow offenders a chance to change their behaviour. It’s what THEY did that got them into prison. It’s our job to try to prevent them from slipping into those patterns and RETURNING to prison.

One of the things that works to do that is job skills. If a guy goes to jail with no skills, no employment history no education, and a drug problem (a very common profile), and doesn’t get those things addressed, there is barely a hope in hell that he’s going to not end up reoffending. BUt if you give him a chance to clean up, get smarter, and learn what it is to work a job and make a living, the chances go up.

Ads like this don’t help ANYONE.

      Bob:
nobody, except crazy people, wants criminals running around in their neighbourhood.
One of the many reasons the Liberals got destroyed is because of the refusal to deal with simple truths.

Now you can go all “pointy-headed-liberal” nuclear about this and tell people in 1000 different ways why rehab is good and all that, and there’s little incorrect about what you write, but in the end…nobody, except crazy people, wants criminals running around in their neighbourhood.

      • wannabeapiper says:

Hmmmm. All the studies I have read suggests that Rehab doesn’t work or is at least not particularly successful This is a very complex issue and tends to be frequently over simplified. As far as ‘nobody…criminals running around in their neighbourhoods”-that may be true. Everytime someone attempts to establish a group home or half way house in a neighbourhood, people get very very upset. Check your neighbourhood, you may have one and not know it.

The Tories are presenting a criminal justice policy like snake charmers or snake oil salesman and the public tend to embrace the idea because we are retributive by nature. But once the voting public thinks about it enough, if they think about it enough, the policy as an election item won’t fly. So I guess it is up to the Libs. obviously, to point out the idea is dangerous and that communities are not surrogate detention centres and we are not volunteer probation officers. To add a bit more, the genral public doesn’t think the jusitce system works and it a slap-on-the-wrist-revolving-door-process, so when they are presented with a retributive idea, I think they tend to like it. If you have been through the jury selection process-you will know what I mean. That process on its own is abusive to those who try to meet their civil obligations-that might be a bit off topic, but it is all part of the judicial experience.

    Ads like that win elections.

  4. Dave says:

Really: why is it OK for the McGuinty Liberals to brag about building jails, when that federal Tory plank got (rightfully) ridiculed?

    I don’t get it.

  5. Rick T. says:

    Nice rip off.

This attack ads reminds me of Martin’s – There will be soldiers in the streets. Scare tatics sometimes work.

Pull up your socks Timmy and counter punch.

  6. New Craig Chamberlain says:

Turns Hudak’s trump card into a Joker.

  7. Derek Pearce says:

It’s funny– I’ve actually be physically attacked on the street by stupid young punks in my neighbourhood before, and yet crime/criminals as a political issue bores me to f-ing tears. What’s wrong with me? How come I just don’t care? I tune out whenever crime comes up in politics. I understand that it’s a big issue for others, but… next.
