AGREED. I used to work in a shopping mall, Mr. K., and would think it too early for this crap when they pulled it out the day after Hallowe’en. And, doesn’t it seem that the displays get tackier and tackier every year?

I feel for the people that have to work there.

Christmas has turned into a corporate greed cesspool. Other than making a nice dinner for my elderly mom and my kids and grandkid, I don’t bother with it anymore.

Ah, but when will they sell the aluminum pole, and the guidebook on Feats Of Strength and the Airing of Grievances?

Not any time soon, I would hope. Festivus, as its most ardent followers know it to be, is a very anti-commercial celebration.

One of my favourite – where else do you pay $$ and have your picture taken just for the privilege to spend your money in their store? Farmed Russian Caviar for a lousy $229.99… Join the Club!

Jesus H Christ…i was pissed because the Halloween stuff is out at my local Stupidstore.

I can handle Hallowe’en. Unlike Christmas, I know I’ll actually have FUN at Hallowe’en handing out the candy and laughing at the costumes. As I am a live-in caregiver, unpaid, Christmas just means more work on top of an already-full workday, and an acute reminder of the financial sacrifice I had to make in order to keep Mom healthy and happy.

It shouldn’t be like that, but Christmas has become increasingly irrelevent in this screwed-up me-me-me world and I have already put the rest of the family on notice that it’s their turn. Me? I’m taking a break.

Good for you – your needs are just as important as Mom’s – you need to keep yourself healthy and happy so you can care for her.

You are doing a nice thing. Take advantage of any and all homecare/respite care that is available to you.

Makes me think of an old Charlie Brown episode where they had the Christmas decorations out on Easter.

    It’s a miracle, it’s Christmas in August. 😉

    Happy Festivus, one and all!

Surely this is why Jesus died on the cross. Hey, are the butterball turkeys in too?

Bah! Humbug!…..methinks Scrooge was right after all…….

  11. I thought the rule was Hallowe’en stuff comes out BEFORE Christmas stuff.

What I like to do with my family (three kids 9,7 and 3 year old) is not have a commercial Christmas. Each present has to be personally made. It could be a song, poem, drawings, something carved out of wood, anything to take Christmas away from corporate greed and give it back to the family.

    • MCBellecourt says:

I like that. Sounds good. It sounds…

…peaceful. Like it should be. High five there, Chris–and pass that on to your family! 🙂

I know that some families have changed it to where the family as a whole, or each member, selects a charity to donate to, in lieu of gifts. I’m a big fan of that idea, though I know it’s a much tougher sell when you’ve got young kids. As you get older, a lot of the gifts you get are lame or unnecessary anyway (gee, thanks for the socks). I’ve been trying to get our family out of the gift exchange thing, but it can be a tough sell.

Community Centre 55, in the Beach, has an amazing Share A Christmas Program. Your kids would love it. If you happen to be in the area give them a call 416 691 1113-Warren Kinsella will give it a reference I think. The program is perfect for your family and the kids can help make toy deliveries to the door of the recipients.
