The Sheepdogs on Stephen Harper, and what you can expect to see in Delisle

On the way back into the big city, I picked up the new Rolling Stone – mainly ’cause Saskatchewan’s own Sheepdogs were on the cover, picked to be the first unsigned band ever to make the RS cover.  Great story, and great to see success come to four guys who have worked so hard.

Also great: these two quotes in the Austin Scaggs story:

“We got our picture taken with [Stephen Harper],” says [lead singer Ewan] Currie.  “Which is akin to having your picture taken with Bush.  I mean, people really hate this guy in the artistic community.”

And:

[Upon spotting, in a Saskatoon drinking hole, a drunk in a spandex shirt with a huge tattoo on his face]: “He’s probably from Delisle,” says Cullen.

I love it.  Anyway, here’s one of their tunes.  Congrats to them, and to their hometown.  Much deserved.

Saw their set at Festival of Friends in Hamilton this past Friday – their set had an awesome energy and was definitely the highlight of the evening.

    Cool tune.
    Cool ’68 Satellite.

Wow, a conservative hated in the artsy crowd. What a revelation! These guys are sure rebels.

Yes, it’s about as shocking and earth-shattering as Margaret Atwood, Judy Rebick or David Suzuki saying something bad about Harper. Quit shocking us like this Warren, we’re going to injure ourselves from falling off of our chairs.

      • Attack! says:

or as shocking as you Harperlyte peanut gallery missing the point, as usual, that:

here’s that hypocrite (“I’ve got to say that meeting celebrities isn’t my shtick, that was the shtick of the previous guy”) Harper, again, trying to horn in on a rising star’s celebrity, again:

…except that, unlike with Maria Aragon, these guys aren’t 10 years-old, and ARE politically aware enough to say the admiration’s not exactly mutual, so – ha! – it’s blown up in his face with that quote in an independent US mag., instead of the sickeningly slavish press he got from the mini-Gag-me

        • The Doctor says:

I was simply making the point that most people in the artistic community loathe Harper and conservative parties and politicians generally, anyone with half a brain knows that, so this is hardly shocking news.

I don’t really disagree with anything else in your post. If you’re looking for some Harper supporter to get into an argument with, I’m not a fan of Harper’s, so I suggest you look elsewhere to get your fix.

          • Attack! says:

Huh? So, just where / how did WK say / imply it was “shocking” news anyway, Dr. Heckle?

He said it was “great,” that a Canadian band won this first ever ‘Cover of the Rollin’ Stone’ (h/t that other Dr., with the Hook)… and managed to diss the coat-tail riding PM in the process.

And haven’t you heard: Nothing’s Shocking. (Or so Jane — or at least Perry Farrell — says.)

          • The Doctor says:

Yes, granted, that was hyperbole on my part. WK’s posting of that suggests it’s news, period.

I suppose it depends on what you regard as “news”. If you apply certain literal interpretations of what constitutes “news” (e.g., something new, novel, noteworthy), then this ain’t news.

You’re the one who jumped all over my comment and therefore dragged out the thread. All I did was respond to you. If you hadn’t done that, all that would have been there was my very simple original observation, nothing more. It’s your responses that added “length”, not my original post. So this was hardly an example of me “commenting at length” about it.

            End of reality check.

Ah, perfect argument. If they’ve hidden the negatives, I guess we’ll never know who they are, correct? How convenient. Also, er, negatives? You realize it’s 2011?

  5. James Curran says:

You missed a good show with the Dogs in very nearby Ancaster Friday night.

  6. Chris says:

Like? Please list at least three examples of artists who have publicly denounced/regretted a picture with Obama.

  7. Ted (not the other one) says:

Finally saw them in June, opening for the Sadies. Best live show I’ve seen in a long time. Great guys too. Their vinyl, that they all happily autographed for my girl, is sitting in the turntable right now. Everybody should buy this album.

Delisle? Short for “can’t even afford a house in Saskatoon.” Ain’t that creep from Little Dead Animals or whatever you call it from there?

    • sj says:

Old time hockey fans will know that Delisle was the hometown of the Bentley brothers. And was where the 1973 version of “Paperback Hero: was shot.

Mr. Tulk, you take sycophancy to a newer and until now, unseen level……

  10. Blar says:

People in Saskatoon are so happy about this. It’s nice to see my home get on the map!

  11. Fortunately, no one other than the artsy chattering class really gives a flying f#ck what they think about Harper or Bush. Artist’s tend to over think and over state their own importance, and forget the fact that they are nothing more than (hopefully) pleasant diversions from real life. Most people are more concerned that our country is ably steered through tough economic times, not whether someone is all kissy with the artsy crowd.

Incidentally, my kid brother makes his living as an artist, and I’m his biggest fan.
