At the border

They made all the kids troop off the bus and show their passports. Anyone know if this is standard operating procedure, in the bright new Homeland Security era?

Yes, although I`ve only experienced it in a bus full of kids (high school), never a bus of adults.

No doubt some union work to rule issue. Always those unions causing problems for honest folks.

Yes it is, my neighbour buses hockey teams into Minnesota. Let’s face it, the terrorists won.

Yuppers. I run into it once or twice a year with a cycling group I help out with. Riders are bused back from Kennebunkport and have to get off to show their passports every time.

  5. James Bowie says:

Totally normal. When I lived in Boston I used to commute on the Greyhound, and we had to get off every time for scanning and interviews.

Happens all the time. if you’re lucky they won’t find some kid with a suspcious background and refuse entry. Wouldn’t be the first time.

I’m a rare person, who sits slightly left of centre, that wants a North American shield and the removal enforcement at the Canada/US border. I want to be able to easily travel in and out of the US. I also want to be able to easily work there. Think EU, or even the relationship between Australia and New Zealand. For being such staunch ‘friends’ and ‘allies’ we certainly make it difficult to visit and spend time with one another.

Yep. Happened to us going down to a Mariners game.

They wouldn’t want to be accused of profiling anyone. As we all know, children travelling on a tour bus are just as likely to commit an act of terrorism as any other demographic. If you don’t believe in profiling, than be prepared to stand in line and show your passport like everybody else.

… please report what happens on the way back. Are Canadian border controls more relaxed, or more stringent, with a bus load of kids?

Sorry, when it comes to fighting terrorism, Im a little to the right of Atilla the Hun……..

If this inconvenience, pain in the ass, whatever you want to call it, prevents one terrorist attack……then it is worth it……..

I dont mind showing my passport, removing my shoes, being totally body scanned, and having limits on the size of containers of personal care items I take on planes……

Though they have tried, there hasnt been a successful terrorist attack on the US or Canada since 9-11 correct?…..

And we’ve never been invaded by Martians either. Must be working.

I expected these kinds of responses……but I again repeat…..there hasnt been a successful terrorist attack on the US or Canada since 9-11……

If there is a successful attack, then you can say the precautions were all for naught, but Id much rather be inconvenienced than give the bastids a window of opportunity…….

But the Americans were actually warned about the underwear bomber and because of
the ongoing communicating problems between agencies, he managed to board a plane. Colour me not convinced that their screening processes are what’s preventing an attack.

    No it isn’t.
It’s complete and utter fear-driven bullshit.

  17. Justin says:

Who cares about terrorism, you’ve all missed the real issue here. Warren travelled by bus?

  18. Tiger says:

Pre-9/11 it was standard procedure for Greyhound buses. Took the Toronto-NYC bus to get to college a number of times in ’99-’00.

OTOH, for schoolbuses on school trips, they tended just to take our teachers’ word for it that we were who we said we were.

Post-9/11, it wouldn’t be surprising if they tightened up a bit.
