In today’s Sun: don’t mess with a good thing

On the surface, the federal Conservative Party, the Manitoba New Democratic Party and the Liberal parties in Ontario and Prince Edward Island don’t have very much in common.

The federal Tories are a bunch of angry white guys led by an angry white guy.

The Ontario and P.E.I. Liberal leaders are inoffensive fellows who Conservatives hate with startling intensity.

The Manitoba NDP are led by a guy who 99% of Canadians couldn’t name, let alone pick out in a police lineup.

All four parties are populated by people who couldn’t be more different, and with approaches that are as dissimilar as you can get.

But they all have something in common.

Doubly ironic that PCs were driving around Ontario for a month with the word CHANGE emblazoned on their campaign bus.

I would have thought that their focus groups would have picked up on this.

Regular readers, it seems to me that too much garbage goes unanswered on the Sun comments section.

I invite you to join me in responding to some of these comments and irritating Conservatives at the same time.

Sorry Mr. Tulk…..the ascendancy of conservatism is over…..we have seen what deregulation of the banking system did, starting in Iceland and continuing into the US, in wreaking havoc on the worlds economies…..

Reducing red tape and reducing bureaucracy and keeping debt and deficit under control yes…..allowing unfettered capitalism….no…..

You and your ilk with your “Im allright Jack“ attitude alarms me…..I am my brothers keeper…..and I get the opinion, as I did from many in my former{{shudder}} party…..that you simply dont want to share…..

It always amazed me that the fundamentalist Christians in the Conservative Party of Canada always railed the most against support for the poor and disadvantaged, and yet always seemed to be the biggest hogs at the trough…(If anyone remembers Refoorms swift backtrack on gold plated pensions)….

I suspect you fall into that category……

You also might find the academy award winning documentary “Inside Job” an interesting and informative piece on the subject…..

I just noticed your statement re: polling….”I’ve cited it more than once before would bs on my side”…..Freudian slip?…….

Those same greedy people are trying to distroy Earth so they can get richer and the poor get poorer. They seem to think money will give them some sort of power over honest people. Whats the use of having $10 trillion in your bank account when your going to die sooner or later? Why would anyone sacrefice nature for greed when theres no way to win against nature when she,s up-set.NC4H

Awesome analysis Gordon, what is your website?

  5. The Doctor says:

I find it amazing that only angry white guys vote Conservative, yet they manage to form government. I wouldn’t have thought that statistically and demographically speaking, that’s possible. Not a single woman voted for them. Who knew?

    • Jon Adams says:

I think it was in reference to the caucus, not the voter. However, I do note that most Conservatives seem to hate Ontario and P.E.I. with startling intensity and most Manitobans wouldn’t stand out in a police line-up. Chacun à son goût.

      • The Doctor says:

“most Conservatives seem to hate Ontario and P.E.I. with startling intensity”

Umm, so do you have any, like, “evidence” to back that statement up? Or did you just pull it out of your butt?

        • Jon Adams says:

It was a joke. Therefore, to answer your question: yes I pulled it out of my butt.

“wk.com regular ‘The Doctor’ takes wry, sarcastic comment seriously, film at 11.”

      • Attack! says:

Um, pretty sure Jon was talking about WK’s description of the CPC, as mostly being angry white guys, to correct both you & ‘The Doctor’ extending that to electorate,

& of course the Dr. was being completely sarcastic about the validity of that (as usual), which you also seem to have missed (as usual), in your earnest resp. to him.

and to cap off those two errors, you write: “have changes whats taught for English” as a rebuke to someone else’s reading comprehension? Clearly, you’re not made of the write stuff, yourself.

    • frmr disgruntled Con now happy Lib says:

      OK….. angry white women(blue rinse variety)…..

      • The Doctor says:

That’s funny, I find that the most angry people on these comment boards tend to be hard-core partisan Liberals — who, for example, seem to have steam shoot out of their ears at the mere mention of Harper’s name . . .

        • frmr disgruntled Con now happy Lib says:

Well Doc, the statement was meant to be somewhat tongue in cheek…The board is run by one of the LPOC’s biggest movers and shakers, so you might expect to have a few more Liberal posters…..and yes, I do dislike Mr. Harper…..he is the antithesis of everything I respect in a politician……and as stated on here many times, I rue the day I had anything to do with him or his(your?) party…..

Been to Free Dominion lately?…..those Con Freepers take angry to a newer and higher level……

    • The Doctor says:

If it were only angry white guys who supported them, the CPC wouldn’t have a single seat in the House of Commons, period. As long as Liberals and their supporters believe this sort of delusional crap, they are headed nowhere.

    Dream on Gord.

    • Cam says:

      Good Day Gord.

Neo-conservatism is only on the rise in Canada because, one, the boomers are getting older and like they have always done, they think about themselves and their well being first, and two because quite frankly the rural population continues to want to suck more out of the system than they are putting in – for example they have lower property taxes, subsidized fuel costs, higher education transportation costs, and higher road maintenance costs. The boomer numbers are peaking and will soon be in decline. The urban population is growing while the rural population is stagnant or falling.

The Occupy Wall Street movement isn’t “Tea Party” and isn’t angry at government – it’s angry at the disparity between the haves and the have-nots – typically brought on by the conservative me first and pro-business attitude of the conservative right wing side of the political spectrum. Why do you think there are on Wall Street? People who don’t have work and don’t have hope look at where we are and how we got here – conservative approach of less taxes, pro-business and pro-free trade – all of which flushed the half-decent paying manufacturing jobs down the toilet. So, me thinks the Occupy Wall Street movement is about far more than the pundits are suggesting and it certainly isn’t pro-conservatism.

Conservatism is peaking and you just don’t see it.

  7. JStanton says:

It appears gord, that you are informed exclusively by not particularly bright right-wing commentators with a chip on their shoulder and a large dose of bigotry.

You are mistaking the ‘rise of conservatism” in Europe and elsewhere with the frustrations of the poorly educated white underclass, who see themselves as victims of non-white immigrants, and are made to believe by demagogues that a territorial nationalist movement will set back the clock to a time when everyone looked and spoke like them, and they had no competition in the marketplace.

This is not a ‘rise in conservatism”, it is merely frightened, stupid people doing and saying awful things. While your Mr. Harper is increasingly emulating theses old and tired tactics, history teaches us that they almost always end in cataclysmic events. The Spanish civil war and the second European war are good examples.

And gord, if you are going to use terms such as “fascist” or “socialist”, you would look far less foolish if you discovered their actual meaning first, so that you could apply them appropriately. Silly rabbit.

    • Michael Radan says:

Are you refering to the election results Mr. Harper achieved by abandoning his conservative principles and moving his party to the centre?

  8. Transplanted Doerite says:

    Sure they share that.

But I think it is important to acknowledge one very significant difference between MB and ON and PEI. And that is, that only in MB did the incumbent party not lose seats. In fact, they gained.

The NDP in MB have gained additional seats in three successive elections. This is hardly being talked about. And yet, it’s an astonishing achievement in electoral politics.

Whatever one’s political stripe is, you cannot help but be impressed by the success of that orange machine in MB. They hard working and relentlessly strategic.
