We came here with the kids after dinner. This place opened only a few days ago. It is breathtaking.

If you get a chance, the Roosevelt memorial is best viewed at night too.

Really, really nice photo. Nicely centered and the main subject is beautifully highlighted.

      On an iPhone, no less.

Phone cams sure have come a long way in not that long of a time, eh? That said, the main difference between an OK pic and a really really nice pic is still in the skill of the photographer. And those nighttime shots can be tricky, so…thumbs up!

Ya man, what a great pic. The only thing that would make it better is to get more of the inscription. I love the way he comes out of the darkness like some kind of freight train engine or the maiden head of a freedom ship

    Really neat.

It is gratifying that King’s statue has a place of honour in Washington, but naturally it is a very emotional controversy with regard to why the sculpture could not be made in the United States by American craftsmen.

It is in the “totalitarian” style and I think the face looks more Chinese than African American. Nothing wrong with being Chinese but the sculpture is of a specific man and from the pictures, it does not “feel” like MLK. Maybe it is different to actually be there.

I do think its a brilliant concept, but I agree……add a few PRC flags waving in the background, and add Mao-Zedong`s face, and it looks like something that wouldnt be out of place in Beijing……
They should have insisted on American granite and an African American artist, imho…..

But $25 million in contributions from the PRC goes a long way, I suppose……

“We don’t do this in America. We don’t handle stones of this size.” Americans have done it decades ago, and they’ve created a World Monument: http://www.astheticsense.com/UserFiles/2007/5/4/Rushmore.jpg I have to admit, I cringe a bit at the thought of pink granite, but that’s a matter of personal taste and perception.

Man, I definitely need to go back to Washington some time. It is an amazingly beautiful city, both its geography and its people. It makes me cry inside a little bit whenever I think of the utter scum the rest of the U.S. dumps on them each election cycle. Before I went the first time I had no idea that there were so many memorials in the Tidal Basin, the Lincoln and Washington memorials are great and all but the attention they receive detracts from figures such as FDR, Jefferson, Eisenhower, and, of course, now King.

  6. Raymond says:

Impressive as it is, the sculpture doesn’t do MLK justice.
He was a much better lookin’ fella’.
