I have to say despite the controversy surrounding the man, I had a great deal of respect for his attempts at making life better for the common man……noblesse oblige if you will……His simple marker exemplifies that…..

    • Disgruntled Frmr Con, now Happy Lib says:

We have all made mistakes Mr. Tulk. Chappaquidik I am sure was with him daily, and I am sure he tried his best to atone for that.

But anyone who watched his funeral service on TV(I did) would have realized he was a great man.

    • smelter rat says:

Pretty low, even for you Gord.

    • The Doctor says:

Gord, I don’t dispute that Kennedy’s behaviour at the time of the Chappaquidick incident was despicable. Everything about it stunk to high heaven. No question.

But nevertheless, is your position that if a person does something like that, then it doesn’t matter what they do the rest of their life? Your entire life must me 100% defined by that incident, no matter what? That seems a bit much to me.

I don’t see why you can’t take a more balanced view, and while justly condemning his conduct then, acknowledging that he nevertheless did a lot of good in many other areas, including of course passing several major pieces of legislation that had a positive outcome on his country.

As for his “lifestyle” or whatever, who gives a sh*t? You just come across like a prig there. He wasn’t a child molester, for Crissakes. So he liked to booze it up. Big effin deal. So did John A. MacDonald, big time. So did Churchill, big time.

      • The Doctor says:

I agree it’s fair to mention Chappaquidick. More than fair. You are not demonstrating good reading comp skills here. But that does not make him 100% evil and despicable, all the time for all time. That’s really all I’m saying. My view of him is balanced and fair. Yours is not.

And BTW, Watergate was not the only time that Nixon broke the law. Far from it.

      • The Realist says:

The left can be incredibly self-righteous when pointing out the character flaws of their adversaries as well. Remember how they raked Clarence Thomas over the coals. It was ironic to see the same leftists defend Clinton’s behavior a few years later.

Men are not angels. How could Ted Kennedy have atoned for what he did? Perhaps if he weren’t so self-righteous about demonizing his opponents (Bork, Thomas), then he wouldn’t be so laughably hypocritical.

If there was a conservative firebrand with the stature of Ted Kennedy that had his own Chappaquiddick, would you ever expect the liberal side to act differently.

      • The Doctor says:

Nixon did illegal stuff other than the obstruction of justice related to the Watergate break-in. If I cared to re-check sources, I could give you a laundry list. But to cite just one, the ordering of the break-in and bugging of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist’s office was clearly illegal. Hey, I’ll give you another, for free: The secret bombing of Cambodia was also illegal.

    • Jon Adams says:

Perhaps if Ted Kennedy suggested Mary Jo Kopechne not wear a seatbelt he would be more deserving of your respect and admiration?

    • Pete says:

Your thoughts suggest to me Harper will be buried in an umarked grave when all the truths about him are known.

This coming from the insurance saleman who defended Rush Limbaugh’s jabs at the Japanese tsunami victims … how honourable you are Gord.

    • Disgruntled Frmr Con, now Happy Lib says:

Well any work is honourable work….but why in heavens name would that fat blowhard Rush Limbaugh take pokes at the Japanese tsunami victims, and why would Mr. Tulk defend him?….

      • Disgruntled Frmr Con, now Happy Lib says:

Thank-you for clarifying……Im sure Gaia was also bound and determined to cause another Chernobyl-like disaster too…..Limbaughs always been an ass imho, and this certainly confirms it……

    • smelter rat says:

A tactic you employ regularly Mr. Tulk.

    • Jan says:

So YOU don’t like being stereotyped? I get it, one rule for you, one for everybody else? Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Looks like his gravestone lies in the middle of about $100,000,000 worth of prime real estate. They could probably rezone that for 10,000s of rental assist units for the Virginia poor.

    Occupy Arlington.

a bit o’ trivia for you from Wikipedia…..

The government acquired Arlington at tax sale in 1864 for $26,800, equal to $375,086 today.[4] Mrs. Lee had not appeared in person, but rather had sent an agent, attempting to timely pay the $92.07 in property taxes (equal to $1,288.59 today) assessed the estate.[5] The government turned away her agent, refusing to accept the tendered payment. In 1874, Custis Lee, heir under his grandfather’s will passing the estate in trust to his mother, sued the United States claiming ownership of Arlington. After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Lee’s favor in United States v. Lee, deciding that Arlington had been confiscated without due process,[5] Congress returned the estate to him. The next year, Custis Lee sold it back to the government for $150,000 (equal to $2,990,000 today) at a signing ceremony with Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln.[4]

Edward Kennedy survived in 1969. Mary-Jo Kopechne did not. I was a young girl back then, getting ready for my first boarding-school. I would never forget the picture of this aspiring young American woman and the tragic circumstances of her atrocious death at the age of 28. Those of us who say a prayer for Edward Kennedy, should say a prayer for May-Jo Kopechne, too:

My uncle is buried at Arlington. He was an American Jew who volunteered for service in WW2 and served with the 9th USAAF. He was a lifelong Democrat and worked in the US Patent office in Washinton D.C. He was a kind, gentle soul, who later in life when on vacation with his Dutch wife was still refusing out of partial fear and disgust to cross into Germany 60 years after the war.To me he was a great man, but few will ever remember him. I gotta say I,m a little disappointed that Ted Kennedy is sharing the same real estate as my uncle. My uncle, David Freed was a better man..

    • Jon Powers says:

A more fitting burial for Ted Kennedy would have been to strap him into the passenger seat of his car and roll it into the Potomac.

  7. Cath says:

My uncle’s at Arlington also. He helped liberate the Nazi death camps. Have been there to visit. Awesome and the most patriotic place of all I think.

  8. JH says:

8th graders you said Warren? Great opportunity for some life lessons there and at an age when these young people will ‘get it’. Hopefully the adults on hand used the opportunity to impart some words of wisdom on how some live while admirable in many respects are not always well-lived. Some years ago I took my now adult children to Arlington and they too were at an age to understand. I talked to them about the Kennedy Family, their contributions to the world and as well of the darkness that sometimes overshadowed those contributions.
Even today they still talk of that trip and what they learned about life there.
