Best political Christmas card

Now this is a Christmas card.  Wow.

And, BTW, did you hear about Peter McKay’s?  It’s of Pete waiting for the valet at the Ritz to bring around his helicopter!

The economy has obviously been his weak spot but it’s was crappy to begin with.

You’d think that he would have no chance of winning next year.

Until you look at the GOP field.

If a moderate republican Jon Huntsman was leading the primaries we would have already heard a “I will not seek, nor will I accept” speech out of Obama or seen another Democrat enter the race. If there is a credible republican candidate it is game over. If they pick a wingnut, it’s a close race. If Bloomberg or someone else sensible comes in as a 3rd party candidate it’s a toss up between the 3rd party candidate and the wingnut.

People in the U.S. wanted change and they ended up with George Bush’s third term and an only slightly better than nothing change to health care. In fact there are some days I think that 12 years of GW might have been better (and I was an ardent Obama supporter in 2008). He has done nothing to improve the quality of life for working families, and has been an enemy of civil rights (we still have the Patriot Act, an out of control TSA, and even U.S. citizens are soon to be subject to indefinite detention at the government’s whim). He has no ideas for getting the economy running again, and even if he did, Congress is so used to steamrollering him that they wouldn’t listen anyways. He has sat around and done nothing when the country needed leadership because it wasn’t politically expedient for him to actually do something.

Apologies for the rant – but I am angry that the last four years have turned out so poorly. While he is a great campaigner that is all he is. He doesn’t deserve the chance to screw up the actual job for another four years.

There won’t be a credible Republican. History shows that it isn’t easy to beat a sitting President, no matter how terrible they are (see: George W. Bush), so all of the viable candidates are hanging back until 2016. The GOP is just letting the Tea Party movement tire itself out…

        • The Doctor says:

I take your point, but the Jimmy Carter precedent is still worth noting — i.e., a sitting president presiding over an economy that’s completely in the sh*tter. Of course, Carter faced a formidable politician in Ronald Reagan, and I suppose the Republicans have nothing close to that in their quiver this time out.

          • Don Thompson says:

It would be sad if the American public was stupid enough to not realize the economy tanked thanks to neo-cons and Republican mismanagement. I understand that kind of mindlessness in Alberta, but the WHOLE U.S.?

          • The Doctor says:

So Alberta has been subject to Republican mismanagement?

      • Obama Republican says:

People get the government they deserve.

Obama had a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, and the best he could give was a health care mandate and no public option. It was a giveaway to insurance companies.

Liberals are displeased with Obama, and they secretly hope to have someone like Mitt Romney to register a protest vote.

I hope that option will be denied to them 🙂

I want the liberal Obama to win again, so that he can be in charge when the real manure hits the fan!

    • Cam Prymak says:

Yes, it’s an early Christmas present for President Obama.

Gingrich is unelectable and Romney hasn’t been able to close the deal in 6 years. Peggy Noonan in the WSJ said it best,

“The biggest fear of those who’ve known Mr. Gingrich? He has gone through his political life making huge strides, rising in influence and achievement, and then been destabilized by success, or just after it. Maybe he’s made dizzy by the thin air at the top, maybe he has an inner urge to be tragic, to always be unrealized and misunderstood. But he goes too far, his rhetoric becomes too slashing, the musings he shares—when he rose to the speakership, in 1995, it was that women shouldn’t serve in combat because they’re prone to infections—are too strange. And he starts to write in his notes what Kirsten Powers, in the Daily Beast, remembered: he described himself as “definer of civilization . . . leader (possibly) of the civilizing forces.”

Those who know him fear—or hope—that he will be true to form in one respect: He will continue to lose to his No. 1 longtime foe, Newt Gingrich. He is a human hand grenade who walks around with his hand on the pin, saying, “Watch this!”

And this is the guy that is *leading* Republican candidate, at the moment.

      • Obama Republican says:

Bill Maher said that Mitt Romney is the only viable candidate because he is the only one who can walk and chew gum at the same time. IE: Bill Maher will consider voting for Romney to register his disappointment with Obama. Romney is that 1950s style Eisenhower Republican who doesn’t look like he’ll rock the boat and liberals could learn to live with him as President.

Yeah, Newt is a Hindenburg disaster waiting to happen. Which is why it would be a boon for him to be the one who gets trounced by Obama.

But I want Obama to win because liberals have been more miserable with him as President than they were under Booooosh.

        • The Doctor says:

You want somebody you hate to win the presidency, solely in order to make liberals miserable.

You’re a regular civics class patriot.

What do you do in your spare time, pull the wings off flies? Torture kittens?

      • Pat says:

But they won’t, because they want the advantage of running against a new Democrat candidate rather than a POTUS. It happens almost every time. That’s why the best the Dems could round up in 2004 was John Kerry…

    • Obama Republican says:

      I hope that Obama wins.

America is going down the crapper, and I want the liberal to be in charge when it happens.

Nothing can save America now, let the face of liberalism take the blame!

    • Pat says:

So says you. Its all about perspective, you probably thought George W. was great, even though he started two wars and threw the country’s finances in the toilet – Obama has spent most of his time failing to clean up the mess W. left behind. I thought Obama would be great, but I didn’t (at the time) consider the impact that the idiotic US system of government would have on Obama’s ability to actually do anything of substance.

The US is in trouble because they are stagnating, and the problem is largely systemic rather than party-based. I doubt any GOP candidate could do much better of a job, just because of the way that Congress acts…

    • Obama Republican says:

Oh Gord, America is cooked. Finit. Done.

You can’t revive the dead horse.

So let’s work to re-elect Obama. Honestly, it’s a lot more fun watching recalcitrant Republicans and corporate-owned Democrats frustrate Obama as the left wonders why they have been betrayed. Obama’s entire cabinet is comprised of Goldman Sachs stooges.

Liberals were much happier when Booooooosh was in charge. I want to make their lives miserable to make them live for another four years under Obama 🙂

      • Pat says:

The USA needs to return to its roots? What are you even talking about? It was its most powerful and successful during the height of the welfare state years…

And if Michelle Bachman becomes POTUS, we would see the end of the USA.

Plus, the GOP will do about as good a job of working together as the Dems.

      • Obama Republican says:

There are many sociological reasons why the social welfare state is unsustainable in the long term. People by default like to have a strong social safety net. But we lack the resources to to sustain a first world infrastructure like we used to.

Lowering taxes might provide short term economic benefit, but corporations will just continue to threaten to jump from one tax jurisdiction to another until they achieve a zero or negative tax rate.

The post-WW2 economic boom will never be seen again, it was largely the result of access to cheap energy and lack of industrial competitors that made North America (ie: the US) into a bastion of peace and unprecedented prosperity.

The current economic ills are caused by labor arbitrage, selling off of industry to slave labor markets (China) and the creation of fake bubbles (Dot Com, Boooooosh’s housing boom). What other bubbles are there left to inflate?

The Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street were genteel and polite protests. Wait for the second dip of the Great Recession to see the real froth bubble to the surface.

      • Obama Republican says:

The 91 percent top marginal rate was in the 1950s.

If the left in America would like to return to it, then perhaps they could make a deal to make the country to return to other 1950s-style values as well.

Sort of like a bipartisan compromise.

    Who are the Harper’s?

  3. smelter rat says:

Happy Holidays???? Why does Stephen Harper hate Christmas?

  4. MC says:

Wow. Now that doesn’t look photoshopped at all. The tacky, fake, awfulness of the Harper card is really quite astounding on its own, quite apart from using some of last year’s material. Bad taste, bad design. Looked like he got some kid or an aid’s brother in law to design it.

  5. David_M says:

    Nice looking family.
’bout all there is to say….

  6. Philippe says:

They must have snapped that right after the recent polling put him ahead of both Romney and Gingrich is key swing states. No way he could be smiling like that otherwise.

  7. Riley says:

I wonder if wall street threatened to harm that beautiful family unless Obama toed the line? Given some of the odd choices for cabinet and senior advisory positions a consipiracy theorist type could be forgiven for wondering…

  8. Jason King says:

” Albertans will vote for a government with something more closely approximating our legitimate voice. Show us what you`ve got, Liberals. I`m willing to listen.”

Funny, I thought we lived in Canada. When you’re done playing keyboard cowboy please come back with something intelligent to say.

  9. Lawrence Stuart says:

Like Naheed Nemshi? Oh, please — make it so!
