In today’s Sun: Flyboy Pete crashes and burns

Almost exactly a year ago, I was at Pearson Airport, awaiting the appearance of a family member. The arrival doors slid open, and out walked Conservative cabinet member Peter MacKay with an unidentified companion. Smiling, laughing, they headed off to points unknown.

In retrospect, I should have taken a picture of that historic moment, so that Sun News could show the world that Peter MacKay has, indeed, flown commercial with the rest of us plebians, at least once.

Unbeknownst to me at the time, the sighting of MacKay at Pearson ranks up there with the repatriation of the Constitution, and the placement of the Last Spike.

It was that momentous. It should have been one of those Heritage Minutes that were on TV all the time, years ago.

Now, MacKay has taken to waving libel writs at anyone who has the temerity to suggest that he has grown overly fond of traveling on the public’s dime, so let’s be cautious. And, let me emphasize, I am not saying that the minister of defence is a reckless, pompous, out-of-touch wastrel and squanderer, one who makes drunken sailors look like models of fiscal restraint and probity. I did not say that, Your Honour.

    Crooked Head. Not him. You.

Although I think it is too soon to write off MacKay (people have a bad memory about one-off events I believe), I think this kind of repeated behaviour (also Clement) is going to make Harper a one majority PM.

There is nothing people hate more than hypocrites (I think even more than liars), and the Harper Government is proving to have plenty of them.

WK, are you suggesting that Flaherty will not be running to replace Harper, or do you figure he will replace Hudak?

  3. Glen says:

I disagree. Memories are short when it come to this kind of stuff. It’s easily forgivable.

Besides, in 10 years Trudeau will be running the country.

Memories are short about this kind of stuff.

      Until they stop being short.

      It’s a tipping-point phenomenon.

If it had been a one-off, no one would have remembered David Dingwall’s gum, either.

    • HeadShake says:

If Justin Trudeau become leader of the Liberal Party, you will truly be consigned to the dustbin of history.

  4. Pete says:

MacKay is the quintessential Tory as in the great description of them, author unknown…………………..TORIES ARE LIARS AND LIARS ARE TORIES.

A career built on deceit can never end well in a just society.

You couldn’t be more wrong, Warren. This does not rank “up there with the repatriation of the Constitution, and the placement of the Last Spike.”

There is photographic evidence of both those events. You SAY you saw this, but without evidence I’m putting it down to air sickness on your part.

    • Warren says:

I can verily swear his female traveling companion was not Condoleeza Rice, Your Honour.

      • Reality Bites says:

Was it his next-door neighbour’s dog perhaps?

Remember when Belinda Stronach dumped him and he staged a photo op about how dogs are loyal, but it wasn’t even his dog?

        • HeadShake says:

Nice that Peter MacKay’s travelling companion is such an issuer for you. Get a life, loser. Didn’t St. Jack Layton say we should all be nicer to each, you “Love is better than hate” and all that. I guess you missed that.

Kenny, McKay, or Flaherty would all be equally as horrifying as PM, perhaps worse than Harper. I know Anti-NDP screeds are as natural as breathing on this site, but people, would anybody, anybody, have the sense to agree with me that you’d rather have Nash, Mulcair, or Topp as PM rather than the three aforementioned “gentlemen”?

    • J.A. says:

I’ll risk my life here, and agree that Nash would be a worthy PM compared to the “gentlemen” you listed. I note that Kenney has had to invest in sharp new suits for his slimmer trimmer frame…is this a sign of ambition? Well, the media always talk about what women wear.

      • TheSilentObserver says:

I always used to joke with friends that there aren’t nearly enough obese, brown haired, buzzed cut, 30-40 something men in cabinet

    • Pomojen says:

I would risk electing a yogic flyer before I’d vote for one of those “gentlemen”.
