—Rev. Al Green comment
I’m a punk, but it occurs to me that Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’ is so masterful because it throbs with despair and (possible) menace. And at the start, it is actual art.
You’re welcome.

There must be a soul singer in you just waiting to come out, Mr. Kinsella……
Here’s one of my favourite Rev. Green’s covers……http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8NWqO85P6Y
Al Green is definitely one of the greats, but I respectfully submit the Chambers Brothers version of the same song:

Thank-you for this…..one of my favourite tunes, regardless of the artist covering the Curtis Mayfield song……
Outstanding! The Chambers Brothers were a soul group that a punk could embrace. The Ramones covered Time Has Come Today, a song that still scares me 45 years later.
Saw Al Green at a reggae fest (!) in early eighties. He was the Rev. Al by then and he had those reggae loving kids eating out of his hands. A master.
Chambers Brothers! yes!
Saw al at the Winnipeg Jazz festival 2 years ago. I’ve seen a lot of concerts, but i’ve never seen another one as good as his was. A complete entertainer, and that sweet sweet voice.
The Reverend Al is a classic. Smelter, have you ever caught the Neville bros. I saw them at Ontario Place about 20 years ago. Aaron Neville was extraordinary. Then there is People Get Ready by Curtis Mayfield. Not punk at all, but a classic song.
Great, great song.
