My Good Friday Letter to you:

Still reading “Fight the Right” – maybe suspend judgment for a moment – there is a strong current in country music you can tap into:

DALLAS, Texas (Reuters) — Country music icon Willie Nelson has written a Christmas song with an edge — a protest against the war in Iraq that he hopes will stir passions in those who hear it. Nelson, 70, said Wednesday he wrote “Whatever Happened to Peace on Earth” after watching the news on Christmas Day and will play it in Austin, Texas on Saturday at a concert to benefit Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich.

During the introduction to their song “Travelin’ Soldier”, Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, who along with Robison and Maguire was also a native of Texas, said: “Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.”

Vociferous Iraq war opponent Merle Haggard, who in the summer of 2003 released a song critical of US media coverage of the Iraq War. On July 25, 2003, the Associated Press reported him saying: “I don’t even know the Dixie Chicks, but I find it an insult for all the men and women who fought and died in past wars when almost the majority of America jumped down their throats for voicing an opinion. It was like a verbal witch-hunt and lynching.”

I know NDP and Liberal types who listen to nothing but “Outlaw Country” on Sirius – – this whole hang ’em high, lock ’em up for a few marijuana joints is why they DON’T like the Conservatives…

In truth, like the thieves crucified on either side our Savior, some country musicians have stood close to prisoners as we struggle to bring about a just society…

So all these patriotic, peace-lovin’ types would prefer to “fight the fight” in America, rather than taking the war to where the terrorists plan their attacks on the USA.

I remember “better Red than dead” capitulative sentiment of Canadian liberals during the Cold War. Now US liberals would prefer to “submit” rather than die by the sword.. or airplanes flown into buildings in NYC.

Oh, perhaps Willie Nelson is a born-again Christian who would turn the other cheek and smother a terrorist with an AK47 with good ol’ country “love”?!
