His Majesty, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and His other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith: we care

Crazed republicans remind me of crazed atheists: they are more preoccupied with saying they dislike/disbelieve than those who actually do like/believe in God or Her Majesty or whatever. ย I mean, honestly, if you don’t care, why don’t you STFU?

I swear: if Twitter didn’t exist, crazy people would go back to doing what they previously did, which was talking to their Imaginary Friends. ย They should all go back to doing that.

In all fairness, they would go back to posting anonymously on message boards. The downside to twitter….it stole the crazy people’s message board use.

  2. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Warren,

Poor Charles Mountbatten-Windsor. A Prince of Wales who will quickly sink himself. The next Edward VIII…

He will never learn not to meddle in politics. Ask any British cabinet minister.

  3. Terrence says:

As for the atheists, they’d probably say that they care because religious beliefs have a way of finding themselves reflected in public policy (implicitly or explicitly.) So criticizing religion is one attempt to neutralize that influence.

Since the British royal family is also intertwined with politics in Canada (albeit on a high level), and since royalty itself has a kind of religious weirdness to it which a royal birth tends to emphasize (magic blood? really?) I can understand why republicans would find this an opportune time to criticize the monarchy.

It doesn’t mean they’re not jerks, of course. ๐Ÿ™‚

You mean like the plethora of interminable, indeterminate, insane haters that inhabit political discussion fora?

  5. hatrock says:

BRAVO! I’m sick of it too.

  6. Bruce A says:

And those of us who don’t care about the Royals, really don’t care about those who do!

  7. Marvin Fabulous says:

What’s wrong with having imaginary friends? Some of the nicest folks I know are figments.

  8. smelter rat says:

    I don’t care that you don’t care that I don’t care!

  9. Sorry WK, I agree with you 98% of the time, 19 times out of 20, but not this time.
The Monarchy, while a constitutional reality in Canada, serves as a distraction from things of more import, public policy speaking. And this distraction is seized upon by folks like the Harperites to cement their street cred as the only party capable of protecting age-old (but anachronistic for some) rites and traditions. Just watch the next poll for an uptick in their numbers.
Yeah, some of us blather on too much against the Monarchy, religion, Lululemon or the New Coke from time to time, but anyone who is engaged in public discourse does this once in a while. So what. Better than apathy, no?

  10. Joe Harrington says:

Point taken Warren. I could not care any less about the royals, it just doesn’t put milk in my tea, so to speak.

It’s interesting how many people SAY they couldn’t care less about the Royals but care enough to take the time to SAY that they don’t care! So, you do care. If you didn’t care, you wouldn’t notice let alone comment.

  11. Jeff says:

You do realize you’ve just started what could, potentially, become an infinite tweet off – for which the next response would be “Oh yeah? Well if you don’t care that I don’t care, then why are you tweeting about it?” Followed of course by “Oh yeah? Well if you don’t care that I don’t care that you don’t care, then why are you tweeting about it?” And so on. Be careful about these – you could shatter the space-time continuum doing something like this.

I’ve never had a problem with the monarchy. Its kind of cute, traditional etc.. But the media madness about the baby has wandered into the world of really, really weird shit. Especially the American media. Ahem. America of course is the country which fought two wars against that entire system during it’s peak of world domination. Another weird thing about today: any hope that child may have for a normal life is already over.

  13. Philippe says:

We just find it so absurd that you guys “care”- that’s in fact what we find so disturbing hence feel the need to tell you you’re being ridiculous in giving a shit about such insignificant nonsense.

  14. patrick says:

No god. The notion of royalty is silly, but it fills tabloids and keeps hacks and halfwits employed. If you want to care about that go ahead, buy a t-shirt.
And I don’t care that you don’t care that I don’t care what you care about, though you did care enough to point out that you don’t care that I and others don’t care what you care about, meaning, of course, that you really do care.

  15. Andy says:

It;s true- I do care about the Royals. Pretty much the same way I care about measles.
Doesn’t mean I don’t loathe them, and wouldn’t be bothered if they all ate a tainted salmon mousse.

  16. Blatzed says:

Deference to traditional and unearned authority is *really* punk rock, Warren.

  17. Al in Cranbrook says:

    Well put, Warren! Thank you!

  18. Tiger says:

Could’ve sworn our host here was a soft republican as of 5-10 years ago.

Guess the royal family is earning converts back! ๐Ÿ™‚

Can see the same — the Labour government in Australia is naming pavilions after the young prince, and they tried to get rid of the monarchy in the 1990s. The Toronto Star has gone goo-goo over the young’un, and they were republican in the 1980s.

The Globe and Mail as of the early ’90s wanted to get rid of the monarchy after QEII’s passing — now they’re writing paeans of loyalism in their editorial pages…

(I think it’s a sign of maturity. The strongest, stablest liberal democracies in the world are majority constitutional monarchies. Traditional republic in form, but with a crowned head of state.)

    • Warren says:

I still oppose any entity that exercises power without democracy (Senate, Monarchy).

But I have a soft spot for the Queen. She is a remarkable politician. Most successful one of my lifetime.

My Twitter point was that if you say don’t care, act like you don’t care. And that means STFU.

        Breaking News…..

Sarah Palin claims Royal Birth was faked.

Palin, the self-styled Queen of Tin Foil and sudden NASA expert claimed today on Twitter that like the moon landing hired actor Kate what’s her name did NOT give birth to anybody. She said that fake babies were her gig and the lame-stream media were complicit in orchestrating a media event to raise the profile of the Royal Family as a scam to cash in on the summer tourist season and as a sop to delusional monarchists everywhere.
In other news 25.000 children worldwide starved to death yesterday and will again tomorrow. Hardly anyone noticed, hardly anyone cared but we do have another Royal Twit to look forward to. You betcha.

      • Tiger says:

Good, good. I’m comforted when my policy placement of those I read is correct.

Yes, the Queen has skills. Not sure about her eldest son. Hopeful about her (second-eldest) grandson. (Peter Phillips is older.)

  19. Massimo Savino says:

The day I became a republican [in the right-to-rule sense]:

Does anyone remember in the 3-4 weeks after Diana’s death a proposal from the immediate Royals (iirc it was Liz, Phillip, Chuck and the two boys) to effectively privatise themselves? They would give up all of their castles aside from Balmoral, Pall Mall, Buckingham Palace but retain the rights to the Kennington Oval and Lord’s, all of both Oxford Street and Regent Street, in addition to all Britain’s mineral rights off the seabed, in exchange for reducing the Civil List by 90%.

I remember this was described in the Independent but can’t find citations at all; I also remember that the Labour government of the day just laughed it out of contention.

My sense at the time was just one of ‘what incredible cheek’. Funny how it wasn’t mentioned in those movies about that period.
