Byline: my partner kicks David Gilmour’s ass

Big time.  I’m biased, but I’d say she’s pretty good at this TV stuff.

Lilley is such a grease bag I could only stomach a few seconds of his spew.

  2. Marc-Andre Chiasson says:

One should never try to confuse poor Mr. Lilley with facts. However, your colleague did an excellent job at countering his limited grasp of common sense and reality, or at least his simulated aversion to hearing the truth. I believe Lilley takes these nutbar positions only to stir dung.

  3. Chris says:

Lilley is such a wang. He sounded so excited to deliver his “I didn’t finish university and proud of it” line – very well practiced.

    Kirbie is sharp.

I nearly gave up on the video three times as I tried to get through Lilley’s asinine “Byline” rant. I cannot fathom how people put up with his third-rate Bill O’Reilly imitation. Even if one were inclined to be convinced by his perspective, that monologue was completely lacking in nuance or art, starting with the rote CBC smears and continuing to Lilley’s ridiculous argument about parity with literature courses on gender-specific topics.

I’m sorry, I know he’s a colleague of yours, but that was brutal. Lisa’s response, on the other hand, was good. I might not have had her patience.

  5. Lisa’s response was measured, forthright and intelligent. The interviewer represents that ‘proudly ignorant’ sort of person that I find very difficult to stomach. I know it’s likely all an act in order to desperately generate outrage (and ratings) from their like-minded viewers, but it’s a shame to see another example of negative, snarky behaviour from what used to be a dignified profession. As a journalist (though not a terribly important one) I’m embarrassed to share his profession.

  6. Harvey Bushell says:

Yes, she did do a good job of not only putting Gilmour in his place but also that jerk Lilley. I’d never heard of him before but I see that he has a daily show on that network. Probably a good indication of why they have a viewership of so many dozens of people.

Ya man she was great. How about City Councillor Kirby?

Maybe she can rip this one a new one too…………………….

    dark sarcasm in the classroom

Yet another reason why the State needs an extreme makeover of the educational system; why fund (taxation!) Gilmour’s anti-Canadian, anti-woman, and anti-non-heterosexual opinions? After all, I quite literally owe my life to Canadians, women, and non-heterosexuals. Inculcating students to self-loathing is not education but indoctrination and brainwashing.

Incidentally, Tolstoy was a total poser and wrote of Shakespeare that he aroused in him “an irresistible repulsion and tedium” – those that enjoy the scribblings of fools tend to be fools themselves.

Conversely, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (which she wrote at the tender age of 18) is the organizing metaphor for our times – genetic engineering, cloning, brainwashed assassins, robot drones, etc. Burroughs writing: no one can deeply understand the North American landscape without it. This is the point: it is the writing, not the particularities of the writer’s genitalia.

Gilmour, the cozy tenured professor, the pseudo-Russophile, proves that “no regime has ever loved great writers, only minor ones” – Solzhenitsyn. The next, great Canadian writer will be the one who intellectually destroys the Moloch that is the Canadian University.

  9. Merrill Smith says:

Gilmour is not a “cozy tenured professor” he is a lecturer hired for that one course only, which is not required for any degree. He will quite likely be unhired once his contract is up.

  10. deb s says:

Ms Kirbie showed white middleaged guys why women shouldnt be dismissed.

  11. Gilmour’s academic obligation is two-fold: (1) to his students and (2) he has to present the breadth and depth of his chosen field as it is, not as he thinks it should be. So if he is given an assignment to teach “Canadian Short Stories”, he is obligated to cover the waterfront, including the good, the bad, the ugly and the brilliant. The gender of the selected authors or their sexual orientations must not be a factor in the creation of a reading list. Since when does a college or university teacher get to amend his or her contract so that he/she gets to teach only the topics that are his/her personal favourites? I have had to teach authors I am not wild about simply because their names and works were on the reading list. if I didn’t like that, I could always refuse the contract. An academic teaching contract is indeed a contract. It shouldn’t be treated as a restaurant menu.

  12. !o! says:

I’m sure Lilley would have all sorts of problems with Gilmour if he wanted to teach only immigrant lesbian literature in a general introductory survey course to literature.
